(Cl. 206-47) This invention relates to an improvement in combined carton and article holder and deals particularly with a rectangular carton designed to hold a product and a means for attaching an article to the external surface of the carton.

In certain instances it is desirable to connect two articles of somewhat different types together so that they may be handled and sold as a single package. For example, permanent waving solution is oftentimes sold in combination with hair curlers or other elements designed to hold the hair in a certain position during the waving operation. The present invention resides in the provision of a carton which may be used to contain one product and to provide a means of attaching the article containing the second product to the surface of the carton.

A purpose of the present invention resides in the provision of a simple means of attaching a cylindrical container or other article in side by side relation to a carton so as to provide an effective display for the product and so as to connect the articles so that they may be easily handled as a unit.

A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a carton having a bottom closure which incorporates a platform designed to extend laterally from a side wall of the carton. A strap is hingedy connected to this extension, the flap being folded upon itself along a diagonal fold line so as to encircle the major portion of an article resting upon the platform. When this strap is folded into generally U-shaped form and locked to the carton wall panels, an effective connector for the lower end of the bottle or similar article is produced.

A further feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a top closure including an additional laterally extending projection which is normally apertured to accommodate a portion of the article being supported. Thus the article is held against a side wall of the carton by a flap extension at the top of the carton and by a platform and product encircling band at the lower end of the article so as to effectively attach the article and carton together.

Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a tuck end carton having a display panel projecting from one of the Walls of the carton and folded downwardly so that the outer surface of the paperboard is visible for display purposes.

These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.

With reference to FIGURE 5 of the drawings, the blank forming the carton A includes a side wall panel 10, a rear wall panel 11, a side wall panel 12, and a front wall panel 13 which are hingedly connected along parallel lines of

14, 15 and 16. A glue flap 17 is preferably hinged to the end edge of the blank along the fold line 19 to the side wall panel 10. This glue flap 17 is designed to fold into surface contact with the inner surface of front Wall panel 13 and to be adhered thereto.

10 and 12 along aligned fold lines 22 and 23. A bottom closure panel 24 is hingedly connected to the lower edge of the front wall panel 13 along a continuation of the fold line 23. A tuck flap 25 is hingedly connected to the bottom closure panel 24 along a fold line 26, the tuck flap 25 being foldable between hinges of the inwardly folded side wall closure flaps 20 and 21 and the rear wall panel 11 when the carton is formed.

The bottom panel 24 is provided with a lateral extension 27 which projects beyond the end edge 29 of the front wall panel 13. This extension 27 is designed to provide a platform panel on which an article such as the bottle B may rest. The width and length of the platform panel 27 is proportioned to properly support the bottle B. An elongated panel 30 is hingedly connected to the extension 27 along the fold line 31 which is substantially aligned with the fold line 23. This elongated panel 30 is separated from the front wall 13 by a cut line extending along the end edge 29 and is connected only along the fold line 31 to the remainder of the carton.

A diagonal fold linev 32 extends upwardly and out- Wardly from the juncture between the end edge 29 of the front panel 13 and the fold line 31. When arranged as illustrated, a triangular flap 33 is formed which folds upwardly from the platform panel 27 and acts as a connector for the strap 30. The diagonal fold line 32 may be raised somewhat toward the upper end of the panel 30 if desired, and if the strap is to encircle a portion of the article B which is not adjoining the bottom of the carton.

The end of the strap 30 is provided with a lock 34 which is designed to extend through a slot 35 in the side wall panel 10 to hold the strap 30 in generally U-shaped form. In forming this part of the carton, the portion of the panel above the diagonal fold line 32 is folded upon itself along the fold line 32 so that the adjoining portions of the strap are substantially in face contact. The upper or end portion of the strap may be folded in curved position to fit the curvature of the object B if desired, or this portion of the strap may be provided with parallel transversely extending fold lines to simplify this folding operation.

36 and 37. The closure flap 36 which is hinged to the side wall panel 10 along a fold line 39 isof conventional form. The flap 37 which is attached along the fold line 40 to the upper edge of the side wall panel 12 is extended length, and is of sufficient length to extend completely across the top of the carton so that the projecting end portion 41 of the flap 37 extends laterally from theside wall 10 of the carton. aperture 42 is provided through the projecting portion 41 of the flap 37, this aperture being designed to encircle the neck portion of the bottle B, and to be held in place by the cap. The cap is indicated by the numeral 43 and is screwed upon the neck of the bottle, the neck being consealed by the cap and not being illustrated in the drawings.

A top closure panel 44 is hingedly connected along an extension of the fold line 40 to the front wall panel 13, and a tuck fiap 45 is hingedly connected to the flap or panel 44 along a fold line 46. This tuck fiap 45 is designed to tuck between the edges of the

36 and 37 and the rear wall 11 of the carton.

In order to provide a display, the rear wall panel 11 is provided with an upwardly projecting portion 47 which extends well above the level of the fold lines 39 and it). A display panel 49 is hingedly connected to the extension 47 along a transverse fold line 50. The panel 49 is of a height slightly greater than the distance between the fold line 50 and the fold lines 39 and 4-0 and also extend be tween the rear panel 11 and the edges of the

49, 51 are folded downwardly along the fold line 50, as indicated in FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings, the forward surfaces of these panels are on the same side of the blank as the outer surface of the carton, so that the carton need not be printed on both sides.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my improvement in combined carton and article holder, and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. A combined carton and article holder including a tubular carton body including front, rear and side wall panels hingedly connected in tubular relation, a bottom closure including a pair of closure panels hingedly connected to said side wall panels, a third closure panel foldably connected to a third of said panels and foldable toward the remaining panel, an extension on said third panel extendable beyond one of said side wall panels, a generally triangular flap hingedly connected to an edge of said extension along a line of fold generally parallel to planes of the front and rear wall panels, a locking strap foldably connected to said triangular flap along a fold line extending diagonally outwardly and upwardly from the side wall beyond which said extension extends, said strap being foldable partially around an article placed upon said extension, and cooperable locking means on the end of said strap and one of said wall panels adjacent the edge of the extension opposite that to which said triangular flap is secured.

2. A combined carton and article holder including a tubular body including rectangularly arranged front, rear and side Walls, closure flaps secured to at least certain of said wall panels and folded into end closing position, an extension of one of said closure flaps extending laterally beyond one of said side walls to provide a platform in the plane of the closure flap from which it extends, a fiap hinged to an edge of said extension and folded into a plane substantially parallel to the planes of the front and rear wall panels, a locking strap foldably connected to an edge of said last named flap along a fold line extending diagonally upwardly and outwardly away from said one side wall panel, said locking strap into substantially face contact with said last named flap, and attaching means connecting the end of said strap to one of said wall panels adjacent the edge of said extension opposite that to which said last named flap is hinged, said strap extending about three sides of the article resting upon said platform.

3. The structure of claim 2 and in which said strap is folded into substantially U-shaped form.

4. The structure of claim 2 and including top closing flaps hingedly connected to the upper edges of at least certain of said wall panels, one of said top closing flaps including an extension extending laterally beyond said one side wall panel in spaced parallel relation to said platform.

5. A combined carton and article holder including a tubular body including front, rear and side walls foldably connected in tubular relation, bottom closure flaps hingedly connected to said side walls and folded inwardly in a common plane, a third closure flap foldably connected to a third of said wall panels and folded to underlie said side wall closure flaps, a lateral extension on said third closure flap providing a platform projecting laterally beyond one of said side wall panels, a wall fiap hinged to said extension and extending upwardly therefrom substantially parallel to said front and rear walls, a locking strap foldably connected to said wall flap along a diagonal fold line extending upwardly and outwardly from said one side wall panel, said strap being folded substantially into face contact with said wall flap and folded into substantially U-shaped form in horizontal section, and means for securing the end of said strap to one of said wall panels to encircle the major portion of the article resting upon said platform.

6. The structure of claim 5 and including a top carton closure including closing flaps hingedly connected to at least certain of said wall panels, one of said flaps including an extension projecting beyond said one side wall panel and including an aperture through which a portion of said article extends.

7. The structure of claim 5 and including side wall top closure flaps hinged to the upper edges of said side wall panels and folded inwardly into overlapping relation, the top closure flap hinged to the other of said side walls projecting beyond said one side wall and including an aperture through which a portion of said article extends.

8. The structure of claim 7 and including a closure panel hingedly connected to a third of said wall panels and overlying said top side wall panel flaps, and a tuck flap on said closure panel engageable between the edges of said side wall top closure flaps and the fourth of said wall panels.

9. A combined carton and article holder including a tubular body including rectangularly arranged front, rear and side walls, closure flaps secured to at least certain of said wall panels and folded into end closing position, an extension of one of said closure flaps extending laterally beyond one of said side walls to provide a platform in the plane of the closure flap from which it extends, a flap hinged to an edge of said extension and folded into a plane substantially parallel to the planes of the front and rear wall panels, a locking strap foldably connected to an edge of said last named fiap along a fold line extending diagonally upwardly and outwardly away from said one side wall panel, said locking strap into substantially face contact with said last named flap, and attaching means connecting the end of said strap to one of said wall panels adjacent the edge of said extension opposite that to which said last named flap is hinged, said strap extending about three sides of the article resting upon said platform, a top closure including side wall top closure flaps hinged to the upper edges of said side wall panels, a top closure flap hinged to the upper edge of a third of said wall panels and folded to overlie said top side wall closure flaps, one of said top closure fiaps including a lateral extension projecting beyond said one side wall panel and including means encircling the article supported on said platform.

10.
