No. 695,847 6 Claims. (Cl. 41-10) This invention relates to an ornamental device and more particularly to a notion having replaceable ornamentation.

The problem with which this invention is concerned is that of providing removable ornamentation for notions to enable the colour or shape of the ornamentation on notions readily to be varied to fit in with different ensembles or for variety. The term notion is used in a broad sense to include articles such as broaches, compacts, bracelets, rings, watches and the like. The object of this invention is to provide replaceable ornamentation so as to make it possible to achieve a wide range of designs at a reasonable cost.

A further object of this invention is to provide replaceable ornamentation which can readily be removed from the notion to which it has been applied and which may also readily be replaced but which is unlikely accidentally to be dislodged.

In the drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiments of this invention:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective side view of a watch provided with a frame for the insertion of ornamentation in accordance with this invention.

FIGURE 2 is an angular perspective view of the watch shown in FIGURE l showing the appearance of the end of the watch.

FIGURE 3 is a plan view of a replaceable ornamentation consisting in a finding to which ornamentation, in this case jewels, have been secured. One of the jewels has been partially cut away to show the structure of the finding.

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing the removable ornamentation of FIGURE 3 being applied to the frame of the watch shown in FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 5 is a plan view showing the removable ornamentation of FIGURE 3 in place on a watch as shown in FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 6 is a plan view showing an alternative construction for the watch.

FIGURE 7 shows the appropriate construction of the finding for removable ornamentation to fit the watch shown in FIGURE 6.

FIGURE 8 is a perspective view showing ornamentation different from that shown in FIGURE 3 applied to a finding similar to that shown in FIGURE 3.

Referring now to FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings, a notion shown as watch 10 is supplied with an anchorage member shown generally at 11. Anchorage member 11 includes frame member 12 and spacing member 13 between frarne member 12 and the body of the watch. The periphery of spacing member 13 is spaced inwardly from the periphery of frame member 12 to define a recess 14. Recess 14 extends on three sides and at least part of and preferably the whole of the fourth side of frame 12. Frame 12 may act as a frame for watch crystal 15 and Patented Dec. 26, 1961 may be suitably secured, such as by soldering, to spacing member 13. As illustrated in FIGURE 1, frame 12 may be a flat metal having an internal aperture to receive crystal 15 and with the interior surface 16 of said aperture being grooved to hold crystal 15. Spacing member 14 may be in the form of a metal ribbon shaped into a rectangular figure and soldered both to frame member 12 and the upper surface of the body of watch 10.

FIGURE 3 shows the finding which forms part of the removable ornamentation. This finding includes supporting

portions

17 and 18 for the ornamentation, interconnected at one side by resilient connecting portion 19 and having securing

portions

20 and 21 respectively at the other side. The ornamentation is shown as being imitation jewels 22 which are secured by soldering or any other suitable means to supporting

portions

17 and 18. One of the jewels is shown partially cut away to illustrate the structure of supporting portion 18. As will be apparent from FIGURE 4 which illustrates the fitting of the finding to the frame, the finding is secured in position by rotating supporting portion 17 slightly in a clockwise direction and supporting portion 18 slightly in an anti-clockwise direction with the consequence that resilientpconnecting portion 19 isl bent or arched as shown in FIGURE 4 permitting securing

portions

20 and 21 to pass along groove 14. When the finding is in position, securing

portions

21 and 22 gripspacing member 13 as shown in FIGURE 5. Itwill be appreciated that whereas the ornamentation can readily be inserted or removed by exerting a clockwise pressure on supporting portion17 and an anti-clockwise pressure on supporting portion 18 without the manipulation of complicated catches, it is most unlikely that this combination of pressures will occur accidentally. If there is an accidental pressure on only one supporting portion, such as supporting portion 17, securing member 22 should hold the ornamentation in position.

FIGURES 6 and 7 illustrate a modification in which the ends 23a of the frame are curved and in which the inner surfaces 24a of the supporting portions 17a and 18a of the finding are correspondingly curved. FIGURES 6 and 7 illustrate that there is a considerable variation in the permissible shape of the frame and that corresponding changes should be made to make the finding conform to the frame. The type of ornamentation mounted on the supporting portions of the finding can vary as illustrated in FIGURE 8 which shows a finding similar to that shown in FIGURE 3 to which ornamental pieces 25 have been secured in place of synthetic jewels 22.

As shown in FIGURE 9 and FIGURE l0, the watch need not be a wrist watch, thus in FIGURE 9 watch 10a including an anchorage member 11a is mounted on a bracelet 27 and in FIGURE lO, a lapel watch 10b having an anchorage member 11b is mounted on a chain 2S which is in turn secured to a supporting pin 29. FIG- URE 11 shows the application of this invention to the ornamentation of a compact 30 having an anchorage member llc. It will be noted that in FIGURE 1l, frame 12e is a fiat plate containing no aperture to provide a space for the initials of the owner. FIGURE 12 shows ring 31 having an anchorage member 11d, the frame 12d of which provides a mounting for a permanent jewel 32. Similarily, FIGURE l2 illustrates an anchorage member 11e mounted on a broach 33. It will be appreciated that ornamentation mounted on a finding as illustrated in FIGURE 3 or FIGURE 8 can be secured to the anchorage members 11a, 11b, 11C, 11d and 11e shown in FIGURES 9 to 13 inclusive.

What I claim is:

1. An ornamental device comprising a notion, an anchorage member forming part of said notion and a removable ornamental member secured to said anchorage member, said anchorage member comprising a frame member and a spacing member between the frame member and the body of the notion, the periphery of said spacing member being spaced inwardly from the periphery of said frame member to define a recess on three sides and at least part of the fourth side of said frame, said removab-le ornamental member comprising a finding having a pair of ornamentation supporting portions, a connecting portion joining together one side of each of said ornamentation supporting portions and a securing portion engaging and slidable along the portion of said recess in the fourth side of said frame at the other side of each of said ornamentation supporting portions, said connecting portion being resilient to permit said securing portions to be moved in a direction away from each other, said connection portion, part of each of said ornamentation supporting portions and said securing portions each engaging said recess to interlock said removable ornamental member with said notion and said removable ornamentation member also having ornamentation secured to said supporting portions said ornamental member being removable from the notion by rotating said ornamentation supporting portions away from the notion and in the plane of said ornamental member.

2. An ornamental device as in claim 1 in which the ornamentation supporting portions, resilient connecting portion and securing portions of said nding are integrally formed from a flat plate.

3. An ornamental device as in claim 2 in which said securing portions are lugs extending inwardly from the ornamentation supporting portions to engage the recess at the fourth side of the frame.

4. An ornamental device as in claim 1 in which said notion is a watch.

5. A removable ornamental member adapted to be secured to an anchorage member on a notion, said anchorage member being provided by a frame member, between which and the body of the notion is a recess, said removable ornamental member comprising a finding having a pair of ornamentation supporting portions, a connecting portion joining together one side of each of said ornamentation supporting portions and a securing portion at the other side of each of said ornamentation supporting portions, said securing portions being slidable along portions of said recess for disengagement of said removable ornamental member, the inner edge of said ornamentation supporting portions, said connecting portion and said securing portions being adapted to lit within said recess to interlock the removable ornamental member with said notion and said connecting portion being resilient to permit said securing portions to be moved in a direction away from each other and ornamentation mounted on each of said ornamentation supporting portions, said ornamental member being removable from the notion by rotating said ornamentation supporting portions away from the notion and in the plane of said ornamental member, the ornamentation supporting portions, connecting portion and securing portions of the finding being integrally formed from a at sheet.

6. An ornamental device comprising a notion, an anchorage member forming part of said notion and a removable ornamental member secured to said anchorage member, said anchorage member comprising a frame member and aspacing member between the frame member and the body of the notion, the periphery of said spacing member being spaced inwardly from the periphery of said frame member to define a recess, said removable ornamental member comprising a substantially U-shaped finding formed from a thin-flat plate of a thickness Substantially equal to the thickness of said recess and including an opposing pair of spaced apart leg portions having opposing ends and a connecting portion joining together said leg portions at one of their adjoining ends, said connecting portion and leg portions being of a width substantially equal to the width of the portion of the frame member overlying the recess, so that said portion of the frame member completely overlies the leg portions and connecting portion when the finding is in place in the recess, said connecting portion being resilient, said finding further including securing portions at the opposing ends of the leg portions, said securing portions engaging and being slidable along a portion of said recess, said leg portions having laterally outstanding, coplanar shoulders and ornamentation elements fixedly superimposed on the upper faces of said shoulders outwardly from the leg portions, said ornamental member being removable from the notion by removing said ends of the leg portions having the securing portions simultaneously outwardly in rotation away from the notion and in the plane of said ornamental member.
