SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,170, dated May 27, 1884. Application filed June 29, 1883. (No model.)

To ail whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CASPER B. SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of funnels which are provided with means for insuring the escape of air from the bottle or other receptacle into which liquids are being poured through a funnel.

The object of my invention is to construct a funnel provided with an air vent which shall be so arranged as to cause little, if any, obstruction to the passage of the liquid,while allowing at all'times the free ventage of air from the receptacle.

To the above ends my invention consists in the provision of a funnel formed of one or more pieces, and provided with a single corrugation or groove extending longitudinally upon the side of the funnel from a point near the lower extremity of the funnel-neck upward to near the upper extremity of the funnel-body, or quite to said upper extremity.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved funnel. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper end of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse horizontal section of the same.

In the said drawings, Adesignates the body of my improved funnel, and A designates the neck of the same. These parts may be of the usual or any preferred form, and may also be formed separately, in which event they may be united in any usual or suitable manner; or they may be formed in one piece and of any desired material.

B designates the vent-channel, which is a simple corrugation or groove extending longitudinally along the side of the body and neck, as shown. At its lower extremity the channel terminates at a point above and near to the lower extremity of the neck A, while the upper terminus of said channel is at a point below the upper extremity of the body;

or said channel may extend upward fully to the said upper extremity. The channel may be U shaped in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 4, or of any other shapesquare, polyangular, &c.without departing from the spirit of my invention. In any event the channel is formed either by a die or by molding, or in any other way. By causing the channel B to terminate above the lower extremity of the neck A, but little, if any, obstruction is offered to the passage of the fluid, while the capacity of the neck or spout is not diminished, as will be readily understood by those familiar with the laws of flowing liquids. Furthermore, as the corrugated portion of the funnel is its strongest part, the implement will not wear smooth by'use, as is the ease with existing forms of corrugated funnels.

I am aware that heretofore funnels have been provided with external corrugations extending longitudinally of the body and neck; but such corrugations were carried fully down to the lower extremity of the neck, thereby impeding the passage of the liquid and lessening the capacity of the neck.

I am also aware that funnels have been previously formed with interior air-tubesterminating above the lower end of the neck but such tubes greatly impede the passage of the liquid and lessen the capacity of the spout or neck, and are also very difficult to keep clean.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An improved funnel constructed substantially as described, and provided with a vent groove or corrugation extending longitudinally upon the exterior side of the body and neck, said groove having its lower terminus above the lower extremity of the neck, and its upper terminus at or below the upper extremity of the body, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
