SAD-IRON.

Specification of Letters Patent N o. 29, 7 96, dated August 28, 1860.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, WV. M. KNIGHT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical middle sect-ion taken longitudinally through the iron, with the handle attached to it in the improved manner. Fig. 2 is a top view of the iron and a horizontal section taken diametrically through the handle.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

This invent-ion is a novel improvement in sad or flat irons whereby the entire handle may be detached from the fiat or body of the iron, or afHXed to it with readiness and thus the handle may be prevented from burning or from getting too hot to be used without a holder.

The invention and improvement consists in jointing one of the legs to the horizontal or holding part of the handle, and in operating this jointed leg by a supplemental rotating handle having a ferrule on its end, with an oblique slot out in it in such a manner that the ends of the legs will be distended or made to approach each other and locked in recesses formed in the flats, or detached from the flat at pleasure, as will be hereinafter described and represented.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is the fiat or body of the iron, which is cast or otherwise formed with beveled recesses a, a, in its upper side; said recesses are shown in Fig. l, in the drawings in which spaces are formed under lips a, to receive the foot portions b, b, that project from the front and back sides of the two legs B, B, of the handle.

The handle consists of two parts, the leg B, and the leg B, with its holding portion C, to the end of which latter portion the front leg B, is jointed, as shown at c, Figs. l and 2. The handle may thus be attached to the flat iron A, by introducing the ends of the legs B, B, into the recesses a, a, and forcing the front leg forward or spreading the two legs apart; to effect this object without using a wedge behind the legs to key them in their recesses, I employ a wood, or metal if desired, handle G, which is slipped on the portion C, before the leg B, is jointed to it; this handle has a ferrule H, se cured to one end, with a slotv cut through it obliquelyto its axis, through which slot g, passes the leg B, the handle G, will now turn the length of the slot, back and forth.

The oblique slot g, in the ferrule H, will give a vibrating play to the leg B, and when the handle portion G, is turned and when legs B, B, are placed within the recesses a, a, and the handle portion G, turned in one direction, these feet will be forced under the lips a, a, and held there by the oblique slot, and by reversing the turn of the handle Gr, the entire handle will be detached.

The parts are so constructed that a rigid attachment of the handle to the flat A, is effected.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The jointed leg B, and slotted locking handle portion Gr, with the recesses a, c, in the body of the iron, arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein described, represented and specified.
