Description

Dec. 13, 1960 H. F. PHILLIPS HOLDER FOR CLIP-ON TYPE BOW TIES Filed July 24, 1959 ATTORNEYS HOLDER FOR CLIP-N TYPE BOW TIES Harry F. Phillips, 164 N. Franklin Ave., Pleasantville, NJ.
Filed July 24, 1959, Ser. No. 829,310 '5 Claims. 01. 211-13 The present invention relates to a holder for clip-on type bow ties.
Presently worn by many individuals are bow ties of the type which have clamping devices on the back for securing the bow tie to the ends of a collar of a shirt. Such bow ties have found Wide acceptance in the haberdashery trade. Devices for the support and storage of this type of bow tie when not in use have been heretofore inadequate and unsuitable for many reasons. Tie racks which are designed to accommodate conventional bow ties and four-i'n-hand ties do not lend themselves to support of the clip-on type of bow tie. Loose storage of such a bow tie in a drawer or compartment subjects the bow tie to excessive mingling with other articles of clothing and to unnecessary handling when a particular bow tie is sought for wearing.
An object of the present invention is to provide a holder for a plurality of clip-on type bow ties which lends itself to support of each tie in an individual and separated state, one from which a bow tie may be easily and readily removed and as easily and readily replaced, and one which is highly effective in action.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a holder for clip-on type bow ties which presents a neat appearance when carrying a'plurality of ties, one sturdy in construction, one simple in structure readily and economically fabricated on presently in use metal forming machines, and one which is economically feasible.
These and other objects and advantages of thepresent invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction With the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure l is an isometric View of the tie holder of the present invention, shown supporting a bow tie thereon;
Figure 2 is an elevational view taken from the rear offthe assembly shown inFigure l;
-Figu r ef3 is a sectional view on 'an enlargedscale, taken on the'line3 3 b'fFig'ur 2; and
Figure 4 is a view an "an enlarged scale, taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the holder of the present invention is adapted for supporting a plurality of clip-0n type bow ties, one of which is shown in Figure 1 and designated by the numeral 10, the holder being designated generally by the numeral 12.
The holder 12 comprises an elongated bar member 14 having a vertically disposed leg 16 on a horizontally disposed leg 18 projecting perpendicularly from the upper end of the vertically disposed leg 16.
Means is provided on the ends of the bar member 14 for attachment of the bar member 14- to a wall surface and in parallel relation thereto. Such means consists in a vertically disposed flange 20 projecting perpendicularly from one end of the bar member 14 and another vertically disposed flange 22 projecting perpendicularly from the other end of the bar member 14. Both tent Office Zfihiflh Patented Dec. 13,1960
of the flanges 20 and 22 are formed integrally with and project perpendicularly from the ends of the vertically disposed leg 16. p
A vertically disposed plate element 24 projects from the free end of the flange 20 and another vertically disposed plate element 26 projects perpendicularly from the free end of the flange 22. The plate elements 24 and 26 are provided with holes 28 for the insertion therethrough of a screw or other fastening element for attaching the plate elements 24 and 26 to.a wall surface, as at 30, in Figure 4. p
The bar member 14 is provided with a plurality of transversely disposed notches 32 arranged in spaced relation therealong with each of the notches 32 extending inwardly from the free ends of the horizontally disposed leg 18 to the upper end of the vertical leg 16 and downwardly from the upper end of the vertical leg 16 to. a point below and spaced from the upper end of the vertical leg.
The walls 34 and 36 of each notch 32 extend in a converging relation from the free end of thehorizontally disposed leg 18 to the upper endyof the vertically disposed'leg' 16 and extend in parallel relation in the .portion of the vertically disposed leg 16.
The walls 34 and 36 of each notch 32 are adapted to loosely guide the prongs 38 and 40 of a clamp 42 on the back side of the bow tie 10 when the tie '10 is positioned transversely of the bar member 14 into embracing engagement with the adjacent portion of the vertically disposed leg 16 of the holder 12.
The clamp 42 is of conventional construction and includes a lever 44, shown in dotted lines in Figure 4, which releases the prongs 38 and 40 from face to face confronting engagement on the portion of the collar of the shirt adjacent the end thereof.
A portion 46, of the vertically disposed leg 16 below the notches 32 is of a thickness greater than the portion of the vertical leg 16 adjacent the notches 32. .As shown most clearly in Figure 4, the prongs 38 and '40 of the clamp 42 engage themselves upon this enlarged or thickened portion 46 and securely hold the tie 10 against lateral movement with the portion of the tie 10 below the knot held in the diverging walls 34 and 36 of the notch 32 which also serve to hold the tie 10 against lateral movement within the notch 32.
In use, the holder 12 is vertically attached by a screw 48, shown in dotted lines in Figure 4, or other'fastening element to a wall surface as at 30 in Figure 4. Bow ties 10 are readily attached to a holder 12 with onetie 10 secured in each of the notches 32 and with the prongs 38 and 40 of one end of the clamp 42 of such tie 1% open 'and straddling the vertically disposed legs 16 of the bar member 14. When thusly supported, bow ties 10 are readily accessible for selection of one of them for wearing and they are easily and with facility attached to and detached from the holder 12 as desired. Additionally, the holder 12, when secured to the wall surface 30, supports the ties It) in an attractive manner in a place where they are not subject to unwarranted handling or contamination by dust or dirt normally present in a dresser drawer or among other articles.
