BRANDT v.12. DIXOl\ l,OF s1. ouis, MISSOURI. Assrenon or ONE-HALF TO. AMOS F. HOFFER AND JOHN H. LAWRENOE,BOTH or SAME PLACE;
CHILDiS' CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forminapart of Letters Patent No. 296,149, dated April 1, 1884:.
Application filed December 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, BRANDT V. B. DIXON, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of a car'- riage-body having the improvement; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the body, the section being? just within the near side piece of the movable head or end; Fig. 3, a similar sec]- tion, the end being turned up; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4. of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 a vertical section showing the clamp in position. The last three named views are upon an enlarged scale.
. The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
This invention is an improvement in that class of childrens carriages which have the head or end of the carriage-body movable, to be turned or down, asdesired.
The improvement relates to the mode of constructing and attaching the movable parts, to the adjustable head-board, which, when down, closes the end of the body, and to the means for bracing and tying the head board, and to the combination of the various parts.
A represents the body of a childs carriage having the improvement in question. Aside from its improved features, the body may be of any of the usual descriptions. T The movable portion of i the bodyconsists of the part B, which is hinged at b b to the main portion of the carriage-body, of the part 0, which is hinged at 0 c to the part B, and of the side pieces, D D, which are secured to and move with the part B. This movable portion is adapted to be turned upon the hinges b b upward into the position shown in Figs. 1, 3, or turned downward into the position shown in Fig. 2. When it is upturned, the parts B 0 form the end of the carriagebody, and constitute a back against which the child may rest. \Vhen the movable portion isturned down, the part 0 forms the end board of the carriage-body. The movable por ion of the body can be secured in either of the positions described, or
in any intermediate position, in the following manner: l
The sides E E of the carriage-body are extended or constructed so as to forma curved edge, e 6. These edges e e correspond in shape and coincide with the general curvature of the edges-d d of the side pieces, D D. The edges d d are notched, waved, corrugated, or scalloped, substantially as shown. A clamp, F, consisting of the brackets f and the setscrew f, is attached to each of the parts E E, as indicated in Fig. 1. The point of the set-screw f is adapted to be screwed down upon the waved edge d of the side piece, D, and, by tightening the se -screw against the edge d, the side piece, D, is locked. Therefore, to operate the improvement, the set-screws f are loosened and the movable portion of the carriage-body turned upward or downward, as desired, and when in the desired position the set-screws are tightened.
The parts G G are used both as a brace and as a tie. They consist of rods j ointed at g g to the fixed portion of the carriage-body, and at g g to 7 the head-board G. In the upright position of the movable portion shown in Figs. 1, 3, they serve more especially as braces to support the parts B O, and to more effectually support the 1 part 0 the braces at g g are shaped to form an extended bearing against the head-board C. When the movable portion of the carriagebody is turned down, as in Fig. 2, the parts G Gserve to tie the head board O. The parts G G also serve to turn the board 0 properly 8 5 into position as the movable portion of the body is turned upward and downward. The side pieces, DD, at d d, are shapedto enable the board 0 to be turned upward against them, and thereby close the body at its corners, when the 0 movable portion of thebody isturned down. The preferable modes of connecting the bars G G with the head'board G and the fixed portion of the carriage-body are shown in Figs. 4 and -5, respectively. The side pieces, D D,. serve also to close the sides of the body when the movable portion is turned down.
I claim- 1. The combination of the part B, the part Gandthe rods G Gwith the fixed part of the carriage-bod A.
2. The combination of the part B, the part C, the side pieces, D D, and the rods G Gwith sides E E, having the parts 6 e, the clamps F' the fixed part of the carriage-body A, as de- F, and the rods G G, as described. 1o scribed. Witness my hand this 10th December, 1883.
3. The combination in the cmria e-body A, of the hinged part 0 and the rods i G, as BRANDT DIXON described. \Vitnesses:
4. The combination, in the carriage-body G. D. MOODY,
' A, of the parts B O, the side pieces, D D, the A. M. SULLIVAN.
