(Cl. 3030) This invention relates to hair cutting devices and is directed particularly to adevice for trimming or cutting hair which can be detachably secured to the back of acomb for cutting and combing hair with one hand by means of the single tool thus provided.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting device of the character described which comprises a holder and a separable cutting blade and guard, and means for holding the cutting blade and guard in assembled relation in the holder for cutting when the holder is attached to the back of a comb.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting device of the character described wherein the cutting blade can readily be sharpened or replaced when necessary.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting attachment for combs of the above nature wherein the holder is formed with a resilient slot for readily receiving the blade thereon with moderate frictional grasping action and wherein, upon resilient clamp ing attachment of the holder against the back of a comb or similar handle member, the holder will be constrained to more firmly grip the guard and blade for holding them securely in place under all conditions of usage.

Another object is to provide a hair cutting device of the above nature which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, low in cost, attractive in appearance, and efiective and long-wearing in use.

Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side-elevational view of a hair cutting device embodying the invention shown in assembled relation upon the back of a comb;

Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows;

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the cutting blade forming a part of the hair cutting device shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is an end view of the blade shown in Fig. 3;

Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the guard forming part of the hair cutting device shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 6 is an end view of the guard shown in Fig. 5;

Fig. 7 is a top view thereof;

Fig. 8 is an end view of the holder shown separately and illustrating its normal shape; and

Fig. 9 is an end view of the holder illustrating the lower end portions being held together for opening the bight along the top thereof for easy insertion of the blade and guard member prior to attaching the device against the back of a comb.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a hair cutting device embodying the invention, the same comprising a holder member 11, a blade 12 and a guard member 13. The holder member 11 is constructed of a flat rectangular piece of tough resilient material, such as steel, longitudinally sharply bent upon itself to provide a central U-shaped longitudinal top bight defined by spaced rectangular wall portions. 14, 15. The blade 12 (see Figs. 3 and 4) preferably of tern,- pered steel, is thin, in the shape of an elongated rectangle and has an upper longitudinal razor sharp cutting edge 21. The blade 12 is further provided with a central rectangular opening 22 and opposed centrally located

The guard member 13 also of thin steel (see Figs, 5, 6 and 7) is generally rectangular in shape and of the same length as the blade 12. The upper edge of the guard member 13 is provided with a plurality of upwardly-.- extencling regularly spaced guard fingers 25 which are slightly curved to one side as can clearly be seen in Figs. 2 and 6. The guard member 12 is also provided with a central rectangular outwardly-struck locating lug 26 and rectangular outwardly-struck end locating

22, 23 and 24, respectively, of the blade 12 when said blade and said guard member are positioned together in face-to-face relation, as best illustrated in- Fig. 2, prior to insertion within the bight of the holder member 11 in the manner hereinbelow to be described.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, when the blade 12 and the guard member 13 are properly assembled in faceto-face relation for use in the cutting device, the guard fingers 25 of said guard member will extend for a sub stantial part of their lengths beyond the cutting edge 12 of said blade, and curve inwardly over said cutting edge.

In assembling the hair cutting device, the lower ends 18 and 1? of the

16 and 17 of the holder member 11 will first be manually squeezed to gether as indicated in Fig. 9, to open by a slightly greater amount the bight between the

14 and 15 thereof, whereupon the blade 12 and the guard member 13, held in properly assembled relation as described above, can readily be inserted into said bight as illustrated. Subsequent release of the

16 and 17 will allow them to return to their normal positions, as illustrated in Fig. 8, at the same time causing the

14 and 15 to move closer together to more firmly frictionally grip the blade 12 and guard member 13 and hold them securely in place in the holder 11. Thereafter the cutting device assembly can readily be applied to the wide back portion of a comb C or other similar handle member as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, whereupon. the spreading of the

16 and 17 of the holder 11 in gripping upon the comb will still further inwardly constrain the

13 and 14 to provide even greater frictional holding of the blade 12 and guard member 13 in assembled position under all conditions of use.

Though only one form in which the invention may be embodied in practice is described in this specification, it is to be understood that this form is given by way of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to the particular disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims. In combination a hair cutting device comprising a substantially rectangular sheet of resilient metal centrally bent into U-shape along its length to provide a longitudinal bight having two spaced fiat rectangular inner wall portions, the outer ends of said wall portions each being backwardly bent along lines substantially parallel with said, U-shaped bend to provide two outer wall portions integral with said inner wall portions, the outermost ends of said outer wall portionsextending beyond the inner end of thebight formed by said inner wall portions, said outer wall portions normally being convergent toward and spaced apart at their outermost ends, and an elongated handle member having an elongated portion of greater width than the normal spacing between said outer wall portions, said wide portion being disposed between said 'outer wall portions, whereby said outer wall portions will resiliently grasp said wide portion and whereby said inner wall portions will be constrained inwardly to provide frictional holding force against said lower edge zones of a blade and guard member inserted in face to face relation into said bight.

2. In combination, a hair cutting device comprising a substantially rectangular sheet of resilient metal central- 1y bent into U-shape along its length to provide a longitudinal bight having two spaced rectangular inner wall portions, the outer ends of said wall portions each being backwardly bent along lines substantially parallel with said urshaped bend to provide two outer wall portions integral with said inner wall portions, the outermost ends of said outer wall portions extending beyond the inner end of the bight formed by said inner wall portions, said outer wall portions normally being convergent toward and spaced apart at their outermost ends, and a hair comb having a back structure of greater width than the normal spacing between said outer wall portions, said back structure being disposed between said outer wall portions, whereby said outer wall portions will resiliently grip said back structure.

A blade and guard holding device adapted to be mounted on a support arid'com'prising an elongated member made of resilientmaterial, and being of uniform crosssection through at least a major portion of its length, and comprising a bight portion comprising a pair of opposed inner wallsconnected at oneend by a curved wall, outwardly curved portions extending from the opposite ends of said opposed inner walls, outer walls extending from said outwardly curved walls, beyond said bight portion, said outer walls being spaced from said bight portion and from each other, whereby said outer walls may be pressed together to open said bightportion to facilitate insertion of a blade and guard into said bight, whereby said inner walls will grip said blade and guard when said outer walls are released, andwhereby said outer walls may be spread apart by a support inserted therebetween so that said outer walls will resiliently grip said support. i

4, The combination of claim 3, said innerwalls being substantially parallel when said device is in normal unflexed condition, and said outer walls being convergent toward their outer ends.' I

5. The combination of claim 3, in combination with a blade and guard received within said bight portion and the opposed walls of said bight portion being flatand parallel so as to grip the blade and guard along the entire inner surface of said opposed walls.
