BURGLAR-PROOF SAFE.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,052, dated December 11,1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY HOL- LAR, of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Proof Safes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my construction in safes is to resist attacks by means of wedges driven in at the edges of the door, or between the door and the body of the safe. Heretofore' the frame at the inside of the safe-door, carrying the locking-bolts, has been attached by means of a tapering bolt, which serves also to bind the plates of the door together. The frame or bars being held in this manner, the weakest point, and the point at which the strain is most excessive, in case wedges are used, is upon the bolt securing the frame to the door. I strengthen the safe at that point by interlocking the bars that carry the locking-bolt with the inner plate of the safe-door by means of flanges, of dovetail or other form, so that the resistance to breakage at that point is taken from the fastening-bolt and transferred to the bar and inner plate of the door. Fl rther, I provide the door of the safe with interlocking ribs, that act to resist the action of wedges in forcing the door outward from its seat, all as hereinafter described and claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similarlettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of a portion of a safe-door and frame of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a section of the door, showing a modification.

0 is the locking-bolt passing through the bar D, which is attached to the inner side of the door by means of atapering bolt, E, either plain or threaded, which serves also to bind the plates of the door together. The inner face of the bar D is made with dovetailed. flanges a, and the inner plate of the door is formed with a beveled-edge slot or an undercut groove to receive the flanges of the bar D, sothat the bar is held to the inner doorplate by connections independent of the bolt E. The bar D, as shown, represents one side of the quadrangular frame, which carries the locking-bolt, and this frame will be attached on each of its sides in the same manner as shown.
In place of using the dovetailed flanges shown in Fig. 1, the bar may be made with L-flanges a, as shown in Fig. 2, the inner plate of the door being similarly formed to receive the'flanges.
The door-seat and door are formed, in the usual manner, with a succession of steps, and
one, two, ormore of these steps are made with ribs d upon their faces, so that when the door is closed in its seat these ribs pass each other. The ribs (1, are grooved lengthwise around the entire safe, and sufficient space is left so that in the ordinary opening and clos- 7o door is forced sidewise, the corrugations or 7 grooves interlock, so that they resist any tendency to force the door out from its seat, thus giving additional security. In case the plates of the door are bent outward in succession,
the strain upon the inner plates is taken both by the bolt E and by the interlocking flanges of the bar D. Thus there is greater strength at this point than at any other, instead of its being the weakest point, as is usually the case.
Having thus fully described my invention, I 8 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The bar D, carrying the locking-bolts attached to the inner plate of the safedoor by means of interlocking flanges, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a safe-door, of the bar D, formed with the flanges a or a and the bolt E, substantially asshown and described.
