ADVERTISING MATCH-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,741, dated August 28-, 1883.

Be it known that I, J orrn T. APPLEBERG, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a,full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing it open. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the box closed.-

My invention has relation to boxes for C011- taining matches, more particularly the class of matches known as safety-matches, in which the match can be ignited only by striking it against a chemically-prepared surface; and it consists in the improved construction of the box, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, whereby the same may be used as an advertising medium.

In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the body of the box, which is rectangular in shape, and by preference is made of thin wood or shavings; or pasteboard may be used, if desired. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the box is made by folding the blank at the corners to of the box, the blank being made of sufficient length to leave an extra fiap for a cover, (shown at B,) which should be a trifle longer than those parts of the blank which form the box proper, so as to project endwise from the same, as shown at b in Fig. 4. Inserted into the box thus formed, and which, it will be seen, has open ends, is a sliding box or drawer, G, which contains the matches. The cover B is fastened to theend pieces of the sliding drawer G by means of small pieces of paper, (shown at d,) and which, if desired, may be in one piece with the label, which is pasted on the top of the cover, the free ends of these paper lapels being pasted to the end pieces of the sliding box, so as to hold the same firmly in place. To openthe box these lapels are cut or torn where they join the projecting ends .of the cover, which may readily be effected,

Upon the inside of the cover B a suitable advertisement may be placed, extending over the fixed top of the box, so as to be concealed from view when the cover B is folded down upon the fixed top of the box, A. When, however, the paper fastenings d d are cut for the purpose of opening the box, the cov er B will spring open, thus exhibiting the advertisement on the inside. In handling the boxes by the trade these, it will be seen, have all the appearances of ordinary matchboxes, there being nothing to distinguish them from the same, so that the advertisement con, tained in or on the box can form no objection; but the moment the box is opened by the consumer the advertisement will be displayed in a conspicuous manner, and will re main sov displayed as long as the box is in use. Inasmuch as the box itself is necessary, in order to use the matches, which can only be ignited by striking them upon the chemi- Cally-prepared surface on the sides 6 e of the same, the box will not be thrown away, as is often the case with boxes containing friction-matches of the ordinary kind, but will be retained as long as any of its contents are left.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. An advertising matchbox, A, having a cover, B, adapted to fold upon the fixed top A of the box, and the sliding drawer O, the fixed top of the box and the inside of the cover being adapted for the display of advertisements, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
