UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT F. OBRIEN, OF BOONVILLE, MISSOURI.
CONSTRUCTION OF FLUES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,295, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. OBRIEN, of Boonville, in the county of Cooper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Erecting or Building Flues or Chimneys on the Flooring- Timbers of Buildings to Receive Stovepipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical central section of a brick flue or chimney arranged or built according to my invention. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in both figures.
This invention has for its object the building of brick fines or chimneys 011 the flooring timbers of buildings without the danger or liability of the adjoining wood work taking fire.
The invention is more especially designed for building flues or chimneys on the upper flooring timbers of buildings to receive a stove pipe from below.
The invention consists in having a castiron base fitted on and between the flooring timbers which are to sustain the flue or chimney, said base being applied to the timbers substantially as hereinafter described to effect the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, A, represent two flooring timbers of a building, and B, represents a cast-iron base which may be described as being composed of a horizontal rectangular bottom plate a, provided at two opposite ends with vertical sides 6, Z), the upper ends of which have each a horizontal flanch c. The depth of the sides 6, b, of the base is equal to the depth of the timbers A, and the base B, is suspended between the timbers A, by the flanches c, c, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The bottom plate a, of the base is perforated with small holes (1, and it has a large central hole 6, to receive the stove pipe.
C, is a brick chimney or flue which is built on the plate a, of base B, and extends upward the usual or required distance through the roof of the building. This chimney or flue at the two sides which are at right angles to the timbers A, are built with projectionse, e, see Fig. 2, and these projections rest on traverse bars f, f, which rest on, and are attached to the timbers A, A, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The chimney or flue G, has its weight transmitted by the base B, and the traverse bars f, f, to the timbers A, A; it will of course be seen that the whole weight of the chimney or flue is supported by the timbers, and that the bars f, f, on which the projections 6, e, of the chimney or flue rest relieve the base B, the latter however may be cast suhiciently heavy to sustain the whole weight of the chimney or flue.
The under side of the timbers A, A, are lathed as usual as shown at g, to receive the plaster, and the bottom plate a, of the base has its perforations (Z, larger in diameter at the upper end so as to allow the plaster to clench when applied to the plate a, the latter as well as the laths being covered alike with plaster and forming an even or smooth ceiling with a circular opening to receive a thimble h, in which the stove pipe is adjusted.
The cast iron base B, it will be seen while serving, with or without traverse bars f, to transmit the weight of the chimney or flue to the timbers A, effectually prevents the timbers from taking fire, as the base is illterposed between the flue and the timbers, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and the stove pipe in entering the chimney or flue is not adjacent to any wood work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The metal base B, formed of the bottom plate a, sides I), b, and flanches c, 0, applied to the timbers A, A, as shown, and perforated at its bottom or corrugated, to receive and hold the plaster or mortar substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT F. OBRIEN.
