A general object of the invention is toprovidea .device of simple and economical construction for releasably attaching a cover or lid of a paperboard box.`
A specific object of .the invention is to provide a clip of pliable or bendable strap metal usable in any one of several alternative arrangements for attaching `a b'ox lid in any one of several degrees of security, providing more or less ease of opening and rapidity ofclosurc, as desired.
Another specific object of the invention is to provide a pliable metal clip which may be merely folded around portions of a box lid to retain the lid in position, or which will permit interlocking ofportions of the clip around a part of the box lid, more securely-to retain the lid on the box.
An additional specific object is to provide a -clip for a box lidwhich may be preaiiixed to the box body prior to positioning of the lid, the clip being thereafter operable to retain the lid on the box.
:Paperboard boxes or cartons are becoming ever more widely used in many elds, including the fruit-and vegetable packing field, replacing, for example, wooden orange crates and the like. A numberof dilierent box designs have been evolved suitable for packaging various sorts of fruits and vegetables, and, because of the personal preference of the packers, the varying requirements relative to the particular fruit or vegetable being packed, and 4the diiierent requirements of local truck shipments, long distance truck shipments, railway express shipments, railway freight shipments and aircraft shipments, the security .of attachment of the box lid to the box body is not standardized. Because` of these factors, among others, fit is .desirable to provide a clip of a single design suitable for various methods of attachment, some of which may be ,operated very rapidly, but Vwhich will .provide easy opening, as may be required by inspection practices, .and also capable of attachment with maximum security when necessary. It is an important vobject of this invention to provide a clip of inexpensive construction, utilizing a minimum of materials, which is applicable to fill the vvarying exist-ing requirements suggested above.

Certain arrangements of the clip with the box provide maximum security, but with any arrangementvthe procedure necessary to open and refasten the box, as for brief inspection of the contents, will be Vimmediately apparent to ythe inspector without tany special instructions or prior .knowledge ofthe clip.v l
`While the clipand fastening arrangement herein show andv described are particularly applicable to fruit and er ICC .-2 vegetable boxes, they will be found to possess advantages in other fields. This invention, accordingly, is riot to be considered as limited to the fruit and'vegetable packing field to which it is presently believed primarilyapplicable.
The novel features which we believe to be characteristic of our invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. Our invention itself, however, both as to its organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof, may best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,in which:

The clip 1 shown in Fig. l is arranged to be applied as shown in Fig. 2 to the upper end o'r side 'portion of 'a paperboard box in a manner to attach lid r cover 2 to the box body or bottom member 3. The clip is arranged 'to pass within a hand hole 4 cut through the end or side wall of the box body and to encircle and lock over the portion of the downwardly extending iiange or skirt of the lid 2 which is adjacent the hand hole 4. Prior to placing the lid `or top member 2 in position telescoping vupon the bottom member 3, the clip is preferably preattached to the bottom member by means of a bent-out tab portion 5, which carries a small, sharp, punched-out tooth 6. Referring to Fig. 3, the end wall of the box body is shown as preferably comprising two confronting paperboard end wall panels,'and the Wider end 'of clip 1 is inserted into the hand hole 4 and upwardly between the inner and outer end wall panels to dispose tab 5 along the'outer surface of the end wall of the box, and in a positionft-o cause punched-out'tooth 6 to dig into the end wall immediately above the hand hole 4. Tang 7 of the clip extends downwardly along the outside of the box wall below hand hole 4. A slot 8 is formed through the wider end portion 8 of the clip, and the end :portion 8' extends upwardly through a narrow elongated opening 9 cut through A'the box lid adjacent its end. Whereas, when the box lid 2 is lowered from its position in Fig. 3, the upper end portion 8 of the clip should normally pass up through opening 9, misalignment may occur whereby the end portion 8 does not enter the opening 9 but engages against a part of the box lid. When this occurs, however, the clip will not be pushed out of its preattached position lon the box body because of the engagement of tooth 6, preferably aided,
at least in part, by spring force of tab 5 toward the body of the clip, pinching slightly the paperboard end wall. The portion of the clip herein referred to as the body portion may comprise the portion starting `at the base of tab 5 and extending toward end 8 which normally extends from the hand hole to the top edge of the wall and which is disposed 'between the wall panels.
As the box lid 'is lowered into position Ionto the box, the upper end 8' of the clip passes through opening 9 of the top member 2 and disposes the end 8 of the clip protruding above the cover. Fingers of the operator may bend this protruding upper end `of the clip outwardly and downwardly along the skirt of the lid `and may bend the lower tang end of the clip outwardly and upwardly, to permit insertion of tang 7 in slot 8. The tang portion extending beyond the slot is then bent downwardly back on itself to lock the ends of the clip together and thereby to complete the attachment as shown in Fig. 2.
The arrangement of the clip as shown in Fig. 2, attaching together the top and bottom members of the box, is more readily understood in detail with reference to Fig. 4. As seen in Fig. 4, the body portion of clip 1 extends between the confronting wall panels of the box `body 3 above `the hand hole 4, and tooth 6 of tab 5 digs into the outer surface of the outer end .wall panel immediately above the hand hole. The slotted end 8 of the clip extends from the body portion up through opening 9 of lid 2 and is bent outwardly around the upper edge of the lid and downwardly along the ange or skirt portion. The tang end of the clip extends `outwardly of the hand hole and upwardly along the llange or skirt of the cover, the end of tang 7 extending through the slot 8 of the clip and being bent downwardly back on itself from the slot. The box lid may be removed by bending the tang outwardly and upwardly and by then bending the other end S of the clip into its vertical upward position to permit the cover to be slipped off. lf such removal of the cover is made temporarily to permit inspection of the contents of the box, later replacement of the cover and re-attachment by means of the clip are readily accomplished as before described.
It has been found with certain types of boxes and with careless workmen that the tab 5 may 'be engaged inadvertently by the lower end of the cover flange as the cover is being placed in position on the box, resulting either in improper seating of the cover on the box or in the pushing of the clip out of position. To avoid this possible diflculty, the clip may be turned around from the position indicated in Fig. 3 to cause tab 5 to enter the interior of the box as `shown in Fig. 5, and the tooth 6 will now dig into the inner surface of the inner panel of the box wall. It will be apparent that, with the clip pre-attached to the bottom member as shown in Fig. 5, the top member may be slipped lon over the upper end of the clip and the clip ends may be interlocked in accord with the procedure heretofore explained.
The clip as shown in Fig. 6 is turned end-for-end from the position of Figs. 2-5 now to have the slotted end 8 extend o-utwardly from the hand hole 4 rand the tang end to extend upwardly from the wall 3 of the lbox body. This arrangement provides several advantages in that the tang, because of its size and shape, may enter the elongated opening of the box cover more readily than the larger end 8', and even severe downward force against the clip, which can occur with inexperienced labor, will not result in the displacement of the clip on the box body. The skirt of the cover, furthermore, cannot the clip position.
Fig. 7 discloses the lid 2 in position on the box body and the clip, which has been preaiixed in accord with Fig. 6, closed by bending the tang end 7 outwardly and downwardly around the upper edge of the cover and along the skirt of the cover to meet the outwardly and upwardlyl extending slotted end portion 8 of the clip, the tang being then inserted through the yslot in end portion 8', as heretofore described, and being bent back on itself after passing through the slot.
Fig. 7A shows an alternative `arrangement of the end portions 7 and 8' to lock the top member to the bottom member. As suggested in Fig. 7A, the slotted end portion 8 may extend from the hand hole as in Fig. 6 and be bent upwardly to lie against the lower portion of the cover skirt. The tang portion 7 is brought downwardly along the outer surface of the skirt but, instead of being inserted through the slot in end portion 8, merely overlies portion 8 and is bent into the hand hole and, depending on the length of tang 7, upwardly a short distance against the inner wall surface. The arrangement'of Fig. 7A has 'advantages -in the speed with which the attachment is made, and this simple arrangement will be found suciently secure `for many situations.
The tab 5 is shown in Figs. 6 and 7 as engaged over the top edge of the inner Wall panel of the box, but it will be apparent that the clip may be reversed, into the position of Fig. 8, to cause tab 5 to engage at the top edge of the wall `over the outer panel. The ends of the clip may be bent and engaged Vas shown in Fig. 7, or as shown in Fig. 7A, regardless of whether the clip is originally preafiixed in the position `of Fig. 6 or of Fig. 8.
As seen in Fig. 9 the tang 7 of the clip has been inserted through the slot in end portion 8 in a direction opposite to that of Fig. 7. The slotted end 8 of the clip in Fig. 9 has rst been bent upwardly against the outer surface of the flange of the cover and thereafter the tang has been forced inwardly and upwardly through the slot. While the vattachment in accord with Fig. 9 is more difficult to complete, rubbing of the end of the box against adjoining boxes, or the like, cannot bend the tang out of position and because the tang bears against the skirt of the cover, greater force is necessary to pull the clip ends apart.
A comparison of Fig. 4 and Fig. 9 will indicate that the tang in the Fig. 4 arrangement could be inserted inwardly through the slot in portion 8 and could be bent downwardly inside the clip and against the surface of the cover skirt to provide an alternative arrangement, which, like that of Fig. 9, would provide maximum security of attachment.
Fig. 12 discloses a further attaching arrangement wherein the clip of Fig. l is preattached to the box bottom member 3 in accord with Fig. 8, for example, and is further preattached by bending the slotted end 8 upwardly from the handle hole 4 along the outer face of the box wall. Such preattachment is more secure than preattachment by means of tab 5 and tooth 6 alone. Following preattachment, including the upward bending of portion 8', the cover 2 is placed ron the bottom or body member of the box with the tang end 7 extending through a slot in the cover as heretofore described. The clip is then bent downwardly along the skirt or ange of the cover and is tucked in under the lower edge of the skirt to complete the locking of the cover in place. r1`he end of tang 7 is readily bent in under the lower edge of the skirt, being of reduced width, and little force is necessary in this simple operation. The resulting fastening possesses high security, and, with clip material which is not very pliable, is unlikely to open even under extraordinary rough handling. 'The fastening is so secure that some diiculty is experienced even in intentional unfastening, and this method is suggested when a highly secure fastening is desired, with rapid closure, and where these desired advantages are catch on tab 5 to disturb body portionof the clip. c l ip 10 is arranged to be preattached by means of tab 11 more important, relatively, than ease of intentional unfastening.
Fig. 13 is a front view of the clip Iof Fig. 1 shown in a further closed or locked arrangement particularly adapted to use with clips formed of very pliable material. If soft aluminum strap material, of about 0.02 inch thickness, for example, is used in the clip, the arrangement of Fig. '13 provides good security. .In this arrangement, the clip may be preattached as in Fig. and the two end portions bent outwardly over the skirt. The tang 7 is inserted to extend outwardly through slot 8 and is doubled back on itself at a small angle from the vertical, whereby the lower end of the tang may be slipped in under shoulder 7. The shoulder 7 is seen to comprise lan edge existing at the base of tang 7 where the strap is decreased in width to form the tang, in the specific embodiment shown. It will be understood that the proportion of the clip in relation to the distance between the upper defining edge of the hand hole 4 and the top surface of the cover 2 should be such that, when the clip is bent around the lid skirt and made snug, the shoulder 7 will be located adjacent and a short distance below the extreme end of the clip at end portion 8'.
The lower end of the slot 8 is perpendicular to the length of the clip, but the line along which tang 7 is bent at the lower end of slot 8 is at a slight angle to this lower end. Forces tending to lift the lid or otherwise to pull apart the interlocked clip ends will tend to pull tang 7 into alignment with the clip, since the force is applied at the point A at one side of the tang. Any such force applied by the lower edge of slot 8 upwardly at point A to the tang 7, at the bend in the tang, therefore, tends to cause the end of the tang to lodge more rmly under shoulder 7'.
In referring to more and less pliable clip materials, itis intended to suggest that while softer or more pliable material provides clips which are more easily bent by the lingers, greater security of the locking arrangement may be required, while with less soft clips formed of dead soft steel strapping of about 0.012 to 0.020 inch thick and about 1,/2 inch wide and 8 inches long, simpler and less secure fastening arrangements, such as are shown in Figs. 7A and 1l, may be sufficient. Clips of the suggested steel have been found to give good service in any of the menof standard Iorange crates, but for smaller boxes, or lightly 'loaded boxes, or when the boxes are subject only to careful handling, thinner material, or more pliable, softer material, such yas soft aluminum, may be satisfactory even for the less secure locking arrangements. In any event, theV material should be readily bendable with the lingers for ease in application of the clips, and should have very little spring or resilience but should remain in the particular shape into which it is bent.
Fig.- 10 shows a modified form of clip 10 comprising a bent-out tab 11 and solid end portions 12 and 13 of equal or substantially equal widths.
In punching out tab 11 from the clip body it has been found that a burr may remain along the edges of the tab extending toward the opening left by the tab in the clip body. Rather than being objectionable, 'such burr may serve the useful function of digging into the wall panel of the box body member when the clip is preattached thereto. Application of clip 10 to the lower body member 3 of the box may be as shown in Fig. 11. Therein, the tab 11 is engaged over the upper edge of the inner wall panel of the lower member 3, of the box, the tab being preferably arranged slightly to pinch the panel member against the It will be understood that the to the wall panel of the box body in the manner generally suggested by Fig. 6, for example, and that the presence of burrs and, a slight pinching effect will tend to make such preattachment more secure.
The box lid is placed down Yoverthe upstanding end portion 12 of clip 10 and attachment may be completed by bending end portion lz'downwardly over the skirt of the lidand inwardly, with end portion 13, .through hand hole v4 and'up inside the box. Alternatively, end portion'13 may be bent outwardly of the hand hole and up over the lower edge of the skirt as suggested by Fig. 7A, the end portion 12 being thereafter bent into the hand hole as suggested above. y
The clip in accord with the preferred embodiment of Fig. 1, or the modified embodiment of Fig. 10, is preferably formed of a pliable sheet metal strap material having llittle resilience. The material should be adapted to yshearing by the dies of a press and each clip maybe formed completely by one stroke of 'the press, there being no doublebends or folds of more than degrees. In forming the tab 5 yof Fig. '1, Vfor example, the forming die severs two sides vand one end of Va small rectangle and 'so forces the greater part of the rectangle from the body of the clip as to form an arm portion displaced from the ybody thickness of one of the wall panels of the box with which Yit is designed for use, whereby the base portion Vwill position the arm portion, vcomprising the remainder of the rectangle, spaced from the clip body which the arm portion substantially parallels by a distance approximately equal t-o such panel thickness. n
The arm portion of the tab may be straight, as shown in Fig. l0, but is preferably slightly curved, as seen in Fig. 1, to permit the tab more readily to be engaged around the `panel edge in the process of preattachment of the clip to the wall panel. The tooth 6 of Fig. 1 is punched out of ythe arm" portion of the tab by asuitable projection on one of the dies during the press stroke, and it will be apparent that the tooth should be sharp or-.pointed to dig into the wall panel and that it should extend from the arm of the tab in the direction of the body of the Iclip,'thereby to engage the material disposed between the anm of the tab and the body of the clip. 4If the tooth slants somewhat toward the base portion of the tab, the tooth will act as a barb, digging, or embedding, further into the -wa'll panel when it happens that some external force is applied which tends to detach the clip from thepanel and digging into the Wall panel less during the original positioning of the clip on the wall panel.
While we have shown and described only certain preferred embodiments of our invention by way of illustration, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art, and we therefore wish to have it understood that we intend, in the appended claims, to cover all such -modications as fall'within the true spirit and scope of ourinvention.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A clip for attaching a box lid to a box body and comprising: a pliable sheet metal strap member reduced in width at one end to form a longitudinallyv extending tang portion and having a slot of slightly more than the width of said tang adjacent the other end, a tab pressed out of said member approximately' midway between said tang and slot, said tab comprising a portion connecting with said member and an arm portion` extending from said connecting portion toward said slotted `end and in parallel spaced relation to the adjacent portion of said member.
2. A clip for attaching a box lid to a box body and comprising: an elongated, pliable, `sheet `metal member reduced in width at one end to form a'longitudinally extending tang portion and `having a slot proportioned to receive said tang at the opposite end portion and having anV intermediate body portion, a tab punched out of said body portion and extending along a part of said body portion in parallel spaced relationv thereto, one end of said tab being joined to said body portionby a base portion extending substantially perpendicular'ly to said body portion, and a tooth punched out of said tab and having a sharp end extending toward said part of said body por-tion.
3. In combination, a paperboard box having an end wall with a hand hole therethrough, said end wall comprising two paperboard panels, the outer said panel having a face exposed outwardly of said box and the inner said panel having a face exposed interiorly of said box and each said panel having a hidden face against that of the other, a clip formed of pliable metal lstrap material having a body portion disposed between Isaid hidden faces of said panels and extending from an edge of said wall at the upper side of said hand hole to the upper edge of said end wall, a tab punched out of said body portion and engaged against an exposed face of one of said panels adjacent one of said edges, thereby to clamp said body portion to said one panel, a cover for said box having a frange extending downwardly along the outer face of said end lwall and terminating downwardly not lower than said edge at said hand hole, end portions extending from opposite respective ends of said body portion of said clip, one of said end portions being of reduced width to form a tang and the other end portion `being slotted adjacent the end thereof, the `end portion extending from the upper end of said body portion passing through an aperture in said cover adjacent said iiange and being bent outwardly and downwardly over said flange, the other 4said end portion extending outwardly from said hand hole and being bent upwardly along the exterior of said flange toward said one end portion, said tang extending and being bent back on itself through said slot.
4. A combination in accord with claim 3 wherein said tab is engaged against the `exposed face of the outer one of the panels at the -top edge of the panel.
5. A combination in accord with claim 3 wherein said tab is engaged against the exposed face of the outer one of the panels at the edge thereof at said hand hole, and wherein said one of said end portions which is of reduced width extends from said hand hole, and said slotted end portion extends through said cover aperture.
6. A container comprising an open top box body provided with a hand hole formed in a wall thereof which is adapted to receive a hand to facilitate lifting the container, a cover comprising a downwardly extending skirt telescoping over the open top of said box and further comprising a panel joined to said skirt and lying across said open top, said panel having a slot disposed generally above said hand hole, a fastening device for securing said cover to said box, said fastening device being formed of pliable metal strap material and comprising a body portion disposed coextensively with that portion of said wall which extends from an edge at the upper side of said hand hole to the upper edge of said wall, said body portion having a tab punched therefrom and joined thereto by a tab base portion, said tab engaging over one of said edges and having a punched out sharp tooth urged into the material of said wall by said tab acting against said body portion, end portions of said device extending from said body portion, one said end portion extending upwardly through said cover slot and the other said end portion extending outwardly of said hand hole, said end portions being formed, respectively, to have a slot Within a iirst end portion and to comprise a tang of reduced width as the second end portion, said end portions being bent outwardly around the portion of said skirt which lies opposite said body portion and being locked together by said tang folded back on itself through said end portion slot.
7. In a/ paperboard box, the combination with top and bottom members of a fastenerl clip for releasably interlocking said members together, said bottom member having an upright wall with a hand hole therethrough, said wall comprising two confronting panel members, said top member having a depending skirt portion lying against the outer surface of said wall and extending from the top edge of said Wall downwardly toward said hand hole, saidtop member having a slot therein positioned adjacent said top edge and above said hand hole when said box is closed, said clip comprising a body portion disposed between said panel members and extending from an edge at the upper side of said hand hole to said top edge of said wall, said clip further comprising end portions, one of Vsaid end portions extending upwardly from said body portion through said opening and outwardly and downwardly along the outer surface of said skirt portion and the other of said end portions extending from said body portion outwardly from 'said hand hole and upwardly along said outer surface of said skirt portion to engage said one end portion, said end portions having, respectively, a tang and a tang-receiving slot, said tang passing through said slot and extending from said slot back on itself, and means to lock said body portion to one of said panel members, said last means comprising a tab cut out of said body portion of said clip and formed around said one of said panel members at one of said edges and having a sharp tooth embedded in said one panel member adjacent said one edge each of said end portions having a length extending from said body portion substantially greater than the length dimension of said tab.
8; A box body for covering with a telescoping lid, comprising: an upstanding double panel wall having a hand hole therethrough7 an elongated pliable metal strap member having a body portion disposed between said panels and extending from a lower end at the panel edges at the upper side of said hand hole to an upper end at the upper edge of said wall, a tab punched from said strap member,'said tab comprising a base portion and `an arm portion, said base portion being attached to said upper end of body portion and extending generallyV perpendicularly from said body portion across the edge of one of said panels at the top edge of said wall and said arm portion extending downwardly from said base portion in a direction generally parallel to said body portion along and bearing against the exposed face of said one panel, thereby to attach said strap member to said one panel, said strap member further comprising a iirst operative end portion and an opposite second operative end portion, said rst operative end portion extending from said lower end of said body portion outwardly of said hand hole and in engagement under one of said panel edges at said upper side of said hand 'hole and folded upwardly outside of said hand hole'to enclose said one edge between the lower end of said body portion and said rstend portion, and said second operative end portion extending from the upper end of said body portion upwardly of said upper edge of said wallthrough an opening in said lid and thence outwardly and downwardly along the ange of said lid and inwardly through said hand hole under said panel edges at said hole and folded upwardly along the inner exposed surface of said wall.
9. A box body for covering with a telescopinglid, comprising: an upstanding double panel wall Vhaving a hand hole therethrough, an elongated pliable metal strap member having a body portion disposed against one face of one of said panels and extending from a lower end at the panel edges at the upper side of Asaid hand hole to an upper end at Vthe upper edge of said one of said panels, a tab punched from said strap member, said tab comprising a base portion and an arm portion, said base portion being attached to said upper end of the body portion and extending generally perpendicularly from said body portion-across said upper edge of said one Vof. said vpanels and said arm portion extending downwardly from said base portion in a direction generally parallel to said body portion and along and bearing against the other face of said one of said panels, thereby to attach said strap member to said one panel, said strap member further comprising a first operative end portion and an opposite second operative end portion, said rst operative end portion extending from said lower end of said body portion and being folded at the upper side of said hand hole to extend in a direction in engagement under at least one of said panel edges at said upper side of said hand hole and further to extend beyond said one of said panel edges and out of said hand hole and being there folded upwardly outside of said hand hole into engagement against an exposed face of said end wall, whereby said folded first end portion retains said tab base portion securely engaged against said upper edge of said one of said panels, and said second operative end portion extending from the upper end of said body portion upwardly of said upper edge of said wall through an opening in said lid and thence outwardly and downwardly along the flange of said lid and inwardly through said hand hole under said panel edges at said hole and folded upwardly along the inner exposed surface of said wall.
