J. E. HASKELL.
PORTABLE TELBSGOHG CASE. No. 281,268. Patented July 17', 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT JOSEPH E. HASKELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE TELESCOPIC CASE.
SPECIFIGATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,268, dated July 17, 1883.
Application 'filed May 23,1883. (No model.)
To all whom t nitty concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn E. HAsKnLL, of Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Telescopic Cases, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portable telescopic case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sec tion of a part oi' the same in the plane of the line a: a?. the spring-catch. Fig. 4 is a section in the plane of the line y y, showing the catch in its closed position for locking the case. Fig. 5 is a like represent-ation, showing the catch open; and Fig. 6 is a like representation, showing the catch closed and locked.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to that class of telescopic cases which are portable and adapted to be carried by hand, and in which the 'top partor cover slides telescopically upon the body of the case in opening and closing the same.
Heretofore the top part or cover has been retained upon the body by means of straps and buckles, and also by means of metallic fastenings applied to the ends of the case.
illy invention has for its object the improvement and the construction and operation of the class of fastenings last above referred to; and it consists in the means which I employ for that purpose.
A represents the body of the case.
B is a metallic plate serrated on its outer face, and applied vertically to the central parts ofthe ends of the case. The vertical edges of the plate B project laterally, as shown at a, a.
C is a plate applied to the end of the top part or cover, D.
Eis a spring attached at its lower end to the lower parts of theplate C. The upper end of this plate is adapted and arranged to engage the serrations or notches a a. on the plate B, and when so engaged the top or cover D is temporarily prevented from being raised, but may be moved down with facility as far as the body A or its contents will permit.
F is a pin or catch swiveled in the upper orV Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of free end of the spring E, and is an oblong opening or slot in the plate C. The spindle or cylindrical part of the catch F passes through and turns in the slot b.
c c are shoulders projecting laterally from the forward part of the pin F. Vhen the shoulders c' c lie horizontally, they lap the face of the plate C, and are so located that they will then hold the spring E out of engagement with the notch es c a', at which time the lid D may be moved up and down or removed without hindrance. The shoulders c c, however, when arranged vertically, will pass through the slot b, being drawn through it by the action of the spring E, which is then free to move in and engage the notches a e', so as to temporarily lock the cover D down. l
d is a ring turning in the outer end of the pin F, and whereby the position of that pin may be controlled or varied with facility for the purpose of locking an d releasing the lid D.
It may be of advantage on many accounts t0 lock the spring E in engagement with the notches a ai', and for that purpose I apply a small lock, G, to the inner face of the plate C, and pierce or mortise the pin F to receive the lock-bolt e, as represented in Fig. 6.
H is the key.
I I are bent or angular plates applied to the plate C, and extending back of the projections a a, thus serving as guides for the lid or cover D.
It will be perceived from the foregoing dethat the lid Dmay be removed and replaced with facility, and easily fastened and securely held in its closed position by means of the engagement oi' the spring E with the notches a a', and that the lock G maybe readily combined therewith, if deemed desirable. The fastening devices now described may be applied either to one or to both ends of the case, preferably to both ends.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination, in a portable telescopic case, of the body A, provided with the notch ed or serrated plate B, and the top or cover D, provided with the spring E, adapted and arranged to engage the said serrations, and a scription and from reference tothe drawings e Qsirro eateh applied to the said spring and aeeessi- B, the body A, and top D, substantially as and ble from the outside of the ease, substantially for the purposes specified. as and for the purposes specified. 4. The combination of the serrated plate B,
2. The combination, in a portable telescopio having thereon the extensions a a, the plate C, '1 5 5 ease, of the serrated plate B, and the springprovided with the bent or` angular plates I I, catch E, provided With the rotary shouldered the spring E, and the pin F, substantially as pin F, passing through a slot in the ease, suband for. the purposes set forth.
stantially as and for the purposes speeiied. JOSEPH E. HASKELL.
3. The combination of the oateh E, pierced Witnesses: [o pin F, a look having its bolt arranged to enter F. F. VARNER,
the opening in the said pin, the serrated plate J. B. HALPENNY.
