(Cl. 164-50) This invention relates to an improved ticket manipulating machine such as disclosed in co-pending applications for patent Ser. No. 289,911, filed May 24, 1952, and Ser. No. 382,244, filed September 25, 1953, now issued as United States Letters Patent Nos. 741,980 and 2,741,979, respectively, both dated April 17, 1956.
As set forth in the applications for patent referred to, in the entertainment field, such as sporting events, including horse racing meets, and the like, it has been conventional to issue passes to a number of groups of attendants. Record of the use of such passes for each day of each meet has been required for a number of reasons, as an instance, to provide against misuse of the passes by unauthorized persons, to prevent use of a single pass for more than one admission, thereby in turn to detect whether such pass had been transferred to an unauthorized person to gain admission after the authorized user had been admitted, and to determine a list of the passes which are taxable and those which are not taxable.
In the invention disclosed in the first aforesaid patent application it was sought to achieve the object set forth by a manually operated mechanism. With a view to simplifying that construction and materially reducing the mechanism required, the invention disclosed in the second aforesaid patent application provided a machine mainly relying upon electric motive power in which a ticket or pass, when received by the machine, if an acceptable ticket, at the beginning of a cycle will actuate an electric switch to establish the circuit for anelectric motor, as a result of which the mechanism operatively connected with the motor will be actuated to perform the several steps of a single cycle, including the actuation of a switch lock and the eventual release of the switch lock at the end of the cycle. 7
Due to wear andtear, taking into consideration that each machine of this type on the average will be operated' more than one thousand times in a single racing day, and then when operated the operations will succeed themselves within a short space of time, the pellets punched out may accumulate so fast that they will not be immediately discharged, tending to cause the machine to become sluggish and repeat itself. Extreme care was necessary to maintain these machines in perfect working operation. With this in mind, the present invention aims to provide a substantially fool-proof mechanism of the type illustrated in the second aforesaid application in which (1) the starting switch when actuated will initially establish the current to the motor of the main drive, and also to a solenoid which controls the brake shoe for a brake drum on the main drive positively to release the main drive for free actuation during a cycle; (2) the main drive when so actuated will in turn positively actue ate a locking device to lock the starting switch in circuitestablishing position and also close a second switch parallel to said starting switch, said main drive then maintaining the locking mechanism for said starting switch in locked position until shortly before the end of the cycle and also maintaining said second switch in closed 2,799,337 Patented July 16, 1957 ICC position until after the locking mechanism for said starting switch has been positively actuated to opensaid starting switch; and (3) said second switch maintaining the circuit for said motor and solenoid after said starting switch has been opened to enable said main drive to continue to operate and liberate said second switch to enable it to open.

Fig. 8 is a fragmental section of a part of the machine showing an authorized pass in the machine after it has been punched.
Fig. 9 is a section on line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a plan of the pass shown in Fig. 8 after it has been punched and removed from the machine.
The operation of the machine when inserting a pass, detecting an authorized pass, and producing a record on the pass so presented to indicate that it has been used for a day of a meet and for producing a record for retention with the machine, for convenience of description may be assumed to take place during a single cycle of operation. However, since the aforesaid functions performed by the machine, as well as others, overlap, the sequence of these several functions may vary, the functions themselves may vary, and the mechanical and electrical expedients for carrying out these several functions may vary, and some may actually be omitted without departing from the general spirit of the invention. The order in which the several mechanical and electrical experients illustrated will be described is not intended to delineate their importance nor the preferred sequence, but is arbitrarily determined with a view to facilitating the description.
In a general way, the invention contemplates the use of a pass or ticket having data formed thereon in raised characters, the introduction of the pass into cooperation with a' mechanism in the machine which will cooperate with the contour of the pass electrically to condition the machine for operation if it is an authorized pass, and the then ensuing actuation of the machine first to complete the advance of the record strip, paper as an instance, with the impression creating medium, such as a strip of carbon paper, thereupon initiating the actuation of a counter mechanism when used, thereupon actuating a lock to anchor the switch in closed position, and at about the same time after completion of the advance of the record strip, actuating the printing platen for an instantaneous printing impression and clearing the ticket for operation by the punch, thereupon initiating the actuation of the punch to perforate or change a part of the contour of the ticket to form a record on the same indicating that it has been used, thereupon completing the actuation of the counter, thereupon completing the punching operation and initiating the withdrawal of the punch and at the same time initiating the advance of the record:
strip, thereupon upon the completion of the cycle completing the restoration of the punch and printing platen to neutral position, and releasing the switch lock, and finally withdrawing the ticket from its impression producing relation with the printing platen, all substantially as disclosed in co-pending application, Ser. No. 382,244 aforesaid.
The main frame The main frame consists essentially of a housing 1 having a top plate 2 resting on the upper edges of the same and secured to such upper edges. To this top plate 2 there is secured the main frame 3 having the transversely extending base plate or casting 4 from which extend four hangers, to wit, the front hangers 5 and 3t; and the rear hangers 6 and 31, which are secured at their upper ends to the supporting plate 2. On the base plate or casting 4 adjacent the outer ends thereof, there are formed two raised runways 7 and 8 on which are slidably supported the cheek plates '9 and .10, respectively, of the auxiliary frame 11 which is connected, at its front end by the cross bar 12 and a plurality of cross rods 13, 14, 15 and 16.
The main drive .now to be described is mounted on the main frame 3.
The main drive Secured to the base plate 4 and suspended therefrom is the motor 17 which has drivingly connected thereto the sprocket wheel 18, which in turn is connected by the sprocket chain 19 to the sprocket wheel 20 fixed on the stub shaft 21 extending through the hanger 5 above the base plate 4 on the right hand side of the machine. This stub shaft 21 is journalled in the hanger 5 in alinement with the stub shaft 22 journalled in the other hanger disposed on the left hand side of the machine. The stub shafts 21 and 22 have secured thereon between the two hangers 5 and 30 the eccentric 23. Between the eccentric 23 and the hanger 5 on the right hand side of the machine, there is fixedly secured the cam 24. In turn, between the eccentric 23 and the hanger 30 on the left hand side of the machine, there is disposed the cam 25. To the left of the hanger 30 on the left hand side of the machine, there is fixedly mounted on the stub shaft 22 the cam disk 26 having the cam 27.
To the outer face of the hanger 5 on the right hand side of the machine near the upper end thereof is secured the microswitch v28 having a downwardly extending roller 29 for engagement by the cam 32 mounted on the shaft 33 extending through the two hangers 5 and 30. The shaft 33 in the present instance has fixed thereto the short arms 34 which have fixed at their outer ends the cross rod 35. The shaft 33 extends through the hanger 30 and to the left of the hanger 30 has fixed thereon the arm 36 which has a pin 37 pivotally connecting the link 38 thereto, which link 38 in turn is pivotally connected to the lever 39 by the pin 4-8, which lever 39 is journalled on the pin 41 secured to the hanger 30. This lever 39 has a cam roller 42 thereon maintained in engagement wtih the periphery of the cam 27 by means of the spring 43 connecting the pin 44 on the arm 36 to the abutment 45 extending from the left face of the adjacent hanger 30. The cam 32 as aforesaid is fixed to the shaft 33. Consequently when the cross rod 35 is actuated to rock the shaft 33, it in turn will actuate the cam 32 to actuate the roller 29 of the microswitch 28 and close the same. The cam 27 in cooperation with the lever 39, link 38 and arm 36, will maintain the cross rod 35 in actuated position during the operation of the machine so that if once actuated the cross rod 35 will remain in actuated position until near the end of a complete cycle of the machine has been completed.
The microswitch 28 is connected to the motor 17 so that when the rod 35 is actuated the circuit to the motor 17 will be established and the current to the motor not interrupted until the roller 29 is again released, the cam 27, however, as aforesaid, maintaining the cross rod 35 in actuated position and therefore the switch roller 29 in circuit-establishing position of the motor, until nearly a complete cycle of the machine has been completed.
The means for actuating the cross rod 35, as set forth in co-pending patent application Ser. No. 382,244 aforesaid, will now briefly be described. It consists essentiaily of the ticket or pass 48, see Fig. 3. Since this actuating means depends upon the conforming of the contour of the ticket to the setting of the machine and to that extent the setting of the machine functions as a selector to select and accept the qualifying ticket, it will be referred to as the selecting mechanism.
The selecting mechanism in addition to the ticket 48, the selecting mechanism includes a mouth or opening 49 in the supporting plate 2, which mouth 49 is disposed in registration with the mouth 50 .of the punch mechanism 51 hereinafter to be described. Above the mouth 50 of the punch mechanism 51 there is slidably mounted the bar 52 which also constitutes the stationary platen of the printing mechanism hereinafter to be described. This bar 52 in the present instance is slidably supported on the supporting bars 53 secured to the inner faces of the hangers 5 and 30. The front end of the .bars 53 have extensions 54 through which extend the set screws 55 which are screw threa dedly connected to the bar 52 of the stationary platen 58 and by means of the nuts 56 on the set screws 55 engaging the front faces of the projections 54, the bar 52 may be adjusted to achieve a satisfactory printing impression location. To the bar 52, in turn, there is secured a frame or guide 57 having the cross bar or stationary platen 58 at its upper end from which extend downwardly extending side bars 59 and 60. T o the rear faces of the bars 59 and 60, see Figs. 8 and 9, there are secured the vertically extending plates 61 and 62, the inner portions of which are spaced from the cross bar 58 to form a slideway or throat for the ticket 48 across the rear face of the bar 58. At the lower ends of the side bars 59 and there are secured attachments, such as the attachments 63 and 64. The attachment 63 has an upwardly extending projection in the present instance, see Fig. 8, positioned in alinement with the slideway formed between the plate 61 and the cross bar 58. The attachment 64 is shown as secured to the lower end of the bar 60. This attachment has a projection 66 which alines with the .slideway formed between the bar 58 and the plate 62. These projections 65 and 66 are provided to register with notches formed in the ticket 48. If the ticket is a qualifying ticket, that is, qualifies for the meet of a particular race, see Figs. 8 and 10, the ticket will have notches 67 and 68 formed therein which when inserted into the mouth 49 between the bar 58 and the plates 61, 62, the edge 69 of the ticket 48 being in advance, its notches or recesses 67 and 68 corresponding as they do to the position of the projections 65 and 66 of the attachments 63 and 64 when secured to the bars 59 and 60, see Fig. 8, the advance edge 69 of the ticket 48 will be in position or in condition to enter the throat aforesaid and to engage and actuate the projection or movable obstruction 70, see Fig. 3, secured to the arm 71, which has a recess 72 to receive the cross rod 35. Consequently, if the advance edge 69 of the ticket 48 is intact, that is, not recessed where it registers with the projection 70, it will then be in position to depress the projection 70 and thereby depress the arm 71, in turn to actuate the cross rod 35. As soon as the cross rod 35 is so actuated by the ticket 48, it will actuate the cam 32 to actuate the switch roller 29 to establish the circuit for the motor 17 to initiate a cycle of operation. Immediately that the current to the motor 17 is 'so established, it will actuate the driving mechanism associated therewith to actuate the earn .disk 26 and thereby th cam 27 immedia ly to actuate the lever 59 and link 38 to maintain the cross rod 35 in the position into which it had been actuated by the ticket 48.
The punch The punch mechanism or device 51 is fixed on the cross bar 86, which on the left hand side is slidably mounted in the hanger on the left hand side of the machine, while the hanger 5 on the right hand side of the machine has an opening therethrough through which the cross bar 86 passes. The right hand side of the cross bar 86, see Fig. 2, is provided with teeth 87 along its lower edge to mesh with the teeth 88 of the gear 89 fixed on the shaft 90 which extends through the bracket 91 secured to the outer face of the adjacent hanger 5, and which shaft 90 also extends through the hanger 6 at the rear of the machine. On the end of the shaft 90 protruding from the rear face of the hanger 6, there is fixed the toothed numbering wheel 92. This numbering wheel 92, see co-pending application Ser. No. 382,244, has a plurality of notches between its peripheral teeth disposed adjacent to indications on the rear face of the dial 92. The dial or numbering wheel 92 in turn is set according to the location of the recess 100 on the ticket 48, see Fig. 10, to be producedby the punch mechanism 51. In other words, if the ticket or 'pass 48 is to be authorized for the twenty-eighth day of the meet, see Fig. 10, then the dial 92 will be set to correspond to this day.
The punch mechanism, see Figs. 3, 5 and 6, consists essentially of a fixed die plate secured to the cross bar 86 and having a female substantially square die 164 formed therein to receive the male die member 73 having the pin 101 positioned in the slot 102 of the lever 103 which is pivotally mounted at 104 on the bracket 74 secured to the cross bar 86. The lower end of the lever 103 is bifurcated, having the arms 106 and 107 secured to opposite sides of the eccentric 23. The eccentric 23 is so timed, see co-pending application Ser. No. 382,244, that it will initiate the actuation of the male die 73 into the ticket 48 immediately after the cross rod has been anchored in switch locking position. In Fig. 3 the lever 103 is shown in its neutral at rest position.
In some instances, in addition to providing a pass which will protect the racetrack as an instance from unlawful use of passes, that is, the use of a pass by an unauthorized user after the pass has once been used by.
an authorized user, it is also desirable to obtain a record of the number of passes that have been received at a particular gate or by a particular machine. For this purpose the counter unit 108 now to be described is provided.
The counter The counter mechanism 108 is mounted on the rear end of the hanger 6 which is at the left hand side of the machine, the operative mechanism of which is connected by the lever 109 and link 110 to the shell 111 fixed on the cam disk 26, see Fig. 2, the pivotal connection of the link 110 to the shell 111 being eccentric to the shaft 22. Since the stub shaft 22 will make one revolution in every cycle of the machine and the link 110 is connected to the shell 111 secured to the-stub shaft 22, the counter unit 108 will register a unit for each cycle of operation to indicate the admission or acceptance of each authorized pass, a cycle of operation corresponding to the acceptance of each authorized pass.
In addition to recording the number of authorized passes that have been accepted by the machine, in some instances it is also desirable to obtain a printed record of other matter, as indicated and illustrated in co-pending application, Ser. No. 382,244.
The brake 382,244, the brake drum 112 is mounted upon thest ub;
shaft 21 to cooperate with the brake shoe 113 pivotally mounted on the arm 114 fixed to the arm 115 and pivoted at their elbow at 116. The rear end of the arm 115 has pivotally connected thereto the armature 117 slidably mounted in the core of the solenoid 118. The lower end of the front end of the arm 115 is connected by the spring 119 to the abutment 120 formed at the end of the arm 121, which is fixed to the rear front hanger 5.
The solenoid 118 is connected, see Fig. 7, by wiring to the switch 28 so that when the switch 28 is closed it will energize the solenoid 118 in turn to actuate the armature 117, in turn to actuate the arm 115 and thereby withdraw the brake'shoe 113 from the brake drum 112 to liberate the stub shaft 21 to be actuated by the motor 17 through the sprocket chain 19 and sprocket wheels 18 and 20. t
The motor 17 being connected by wiring to the switch 28, when the switch 28 is closed the current to the motor 17 will be established to actuate it so that practically simultaneously with energizing the solenoid 118 to actuate the brake shoe 113, the motor 17 will be energized to drive the stub shaft 21.
In turn, since the stub shaft 21 is drivingly connected through the eccentric 23 with the stub shaft 22, when the stub shaft 22 is actuated to rotate the cam disk 26, it will bring the raised portion 123 of the cam disk 26 into engagement with the roller 124 to close the switch 125. Since the switch 125 is connected by wiring to the solenoid 118 and the motor 17, parallel to the wiring between the switch 28 and the solenoid 118 and motor 17, after the switch 28 is positively returned to open position, the current to the solenoid 118 and motor 17 will continue until the raised portion 123 of the cam disk 26 will clear the roller 124 and the depressed portion or dwell 126 of the cam disk 26 will engage the roller 124 of the switch 125.
Wiring diagram As will appear from the wiring diagram, Fig. 7, when the switch 28 is closed by a ticket 48, a circuit will be established from the source of current through the outlet plug 127 to the solenoid 118 and motor 17, the switch 28 being connected by the conductor 128 to the terminal 129 and from the terminal 129 by the conductor 130 to the outlet plug 127. In turn, the-switch 28 will be connected by the conductor 131 to the terminal 132 on the terminal block 133, the terminal 134 of which block- 133 will be connected by the conductor 135 to the terminal 136 on the terminal block 137, the terminal connected back to the plug 127 by the conductor 14]} which is connected to the terminal 142 on the terminal block 143, the terminal 144 of which terminal block 143 is connected by the conductor 145 to the terminal 146 on the terminal block 147, the terminal 148 of which terminal block 147 is connected to the outlet plug 127 by the conductor 149. The motor 17, on the other hand, is connected by the terminal to the terminal 148 which is connected as aforesaid by the conductor 149 to the outlet plug 127. Thereupon, when the cam disk 26 is actuated to cause the raised portion 123 to actuate the roller 124 of the switch 125 to close the same, then a parallel circuit to the outlet plug 127 will be established, the switch 125 being connected by the conductor 151 to the terminal 152 on the terminal block 153, the terminal 154 of which terminal block 153 is connected by the conductor 155 to the terminal 156 on the terminal block 157, the other terminal 129 of the terminal block 157 being connected by the conductor 130 to the outlet plug 127. The other side of the switch 125 will then be connected by the conductor 159 to the terminal 132 7 tor 135 to the terminal 136 on the terminal block 137, and the other terminal 138 of the terminal block 137, as aforesaid, will be connected to the solenoid 118 and the motor 17, the solenoid 118 being connected to the terminal 138 by the conductor 139 and the motor 17 being connected to the terminal 138 by the conductor 140. The solenoid 11-8, on the other hand, will be connected back to the plug 127 as aforesaid, through the conductor 141, terminal block 143, conductor 145, terminal block 147 and conductor 149, and the other side of the electric motor 17 will be connected by the conductors 150 and 149 to the outlet plug 127.
As a result of the foregoing, when the electric switch 28 is closed by a ticket 48, a cycle of operation will ensue in the following steps:
First: The current to the solenoid lls and motor 17 will be established. Immediately that the current is established in the solenoid 118, the brake drum 112 will be liberated and upon establishing the current in the motor 17 the stub shaft 21 and in turn the eccentric 23 will be actuated. Due to the consequent actuation of the stub shaft 22, the cam disk 26 will be actuated to bring the raised portion 123 into engagement with a control device such as the roller 124 to close the switch 125, and at substantially the same time it will cause the roller 42 to engage the raised portion 160 of the cam 27 to anchor the cross rod 35 in depressed or deflected position.
Second: The advance of the record strip 161 will be completed by actuation of the lever 166 by the cam 24, as set forth in co-pending application, Ser. No. 382,244.
Third: The movable platen 162 of the printing mechanism will be liberated for action by the impact spring 163, and the punch 73 actuated.
Fourth: The initiation of the advance of the record strip 161 after the completion of the impression stroke by the movable platen 162 and the actuation of the counter 108, will be effected.
Fifth: The cross rod 35 will be positively returned thereby releasing the switch '28 to enable it to open. However, since the switch 125 will still remain closed, the motor 17 will continue to operate and continue the actuation of the cam disk 26 until the depressed portion 126 of the cam disk 26 will receive the roller 124 and enable the same to open the switch 125 and the follower 42 will have cleared the cam means 166.
From the foregoing, it will thus be seen that the punch 73 having pierced the ticket 48 to form as an instance the recess 100 and having been withdrawn out of the way of the projection 70, the projection 70 can now be returned to neutral position upon the actuation of the cross rod 35, and that this projection 70 will be positively returned to this neutral position thereby to clear the throat of any pellets when the roller or follower 42 will clear the raised portion 160 of the cam 27 and positively be guided between the depressed portion 165 and the opposing cam means 166 and that the continued actuation of the eccentric 23 and stub shafts 21 and 22 will be positively anchored against actuation after the current to the motor 17 has been shut off by the brake shoe 113 engaging the brake drum 112 mounted on the stub shaft 21, after the cam means 166 has cleared the follower 42 and the follower 42 is again under the control of the spring 43.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a machine for perforating an authorized ticket having an intact leading edge portion, a frame, a guide in said frame for receiving the ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending there from to form a throat, an obstruction normally extending into such throat in neutral position, said obstruction being movably mounted in said frame to be actuated into a deflected position upon engagement by the intact edge portion of the ticket and the movement of the ticket into its fully inserted position, a device for perforating the ticket mounted in said frame and including a main shaft operatively mounted in said frame, and operatively connected to said perforating device to actuate said perforating device for a cycle of operation at a time, an electric motor operatively connected to said main shaft, an electric circuit including a first electric switch operatively connected to said motor, means for operatively connecting said movable obstruction to said first switch to close said first switch in turn to establish the current to said motor when said movable obstruction is deflected by the intact leading edge portion of the ticket to actuate said main shaft in turn to operate said ticket perforating device, a second electric switch operatively connected to said motor, a first cam fixed on said main shaft, a control device operatively connecting said first cam to said second switch to close said second switch when the actuation of said main shaft is initiated and to maintain said second switch closed until near the end of a cycle of operation of said main shaft, a second cam on said main shaft, a linkage having a follower, a spring urging said follower into contact with said second cam, the linkage being connected to said movable obstruction, the second cam and follower arrangement enabling the second cam positively. to move and hold said obstruction in the deflected position, the spring normally returning the obstruction and the linkage to its neutral position, and other cam means carried by said main shaft and co-acting with the follower positively to move said linkage and the obstruction to its neutral position after the actuation of the perforating device, said other cam means releasing the follower to restore control to said spring at the end of the cycle.
2. In a machine for perforating an authorized ticket having an intact leading edge portion, a frame, a guide in said frame for receiving the ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending therefrom to form a throat, an obstruction normally extending into said throat in neutral position, said obstruction being movably mounted in said frame to be actuated into a deflected position upon engagement by said intact edge portion and the movement of the ticket to its fully inserted position, a device for perforating the ticket mounted in said frame and including a main shaft operatively mounted in said frame, and operatively connected to said perforating device to actuate said perforating device for a cycle of operation at a time, an electric motor operatively connected to said main shaft, a brake drum on said shaft, a brake shoe operatively mounted in said frame, a first spring operatively connected to said brake shoe to cause said brake shoe normally to engage said drum to arrest said perforating device, a solenoid operatively connected to said brake shoe, an electric circuit including a first electric switch operatively connected to said motor and to said solenoid, means for operatively connecting said movable obstruction to said first switch to close said first switch in turn to establish the current to said motor and to establish the current in said solenoid when said movable obstruction is actuated by the intact leading edge portion of the ticket to actuate said brake shoe to clear said brake drum and actuate said main shaft in turn to operate said ticket perforating device, a second electric switch operatively connected to said motor and to said solenoid, a first cam fixed on said main shaft, a control device operatively connecting said first cam to said second switch to close said second switch when the actuation of said main shaft is initiated and to maintain said second switch closed until near the end of a cycle of operation of said main shaft, a second cam on said main shaft, a linkage having a follower, a second spring urging said follower into contact with said second cam, the linkage being connected to said movable ob- .Struction, the second cam and follower arrangement enabling the second cam positively to move and hold said obstruction in the deflected position, the second spring normally returning the obstruction and the linkage to its neutral position, and other cam means carried by said main shaft and co-acting with said follower positively to move said linkage and the obstruction to its neutral position after the actuation of the perforating device, said other cam means releasing the follower to restore control to said second spring at the end of the cycle.
