CHILDREN'S DRESS DISPLAY FORM Filed March 7 1956 June 18, 1957 HTTURNEY Unitcd States Patent CHILDRENS DRESS DISPLAY FORM Ernest Schwartz, Perth Amboy, N. J. Application March 7, 1956, Serial No. 570,104 11 Claims. (Cl. 223-68) This invention relates generally .to garment supports and, more particularly, to .new and useful improvements in a hanger and shaper for supporting and displaying childrens dresses.
Childrens dresses with outwardly flaring crinoline skirts are in vogue and difficulty has been encountered in properly supporting such dresses for display and storage purposes.
It is therefore the prime object of the present invention to provide a hanger and shaper for a childs dress of this type which will display the dress in the same appearance as when worn.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger and shaper of this type which will support the dress both from the shoulder and from the waist or belt portion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger and shaper for a childs dress with means for bulging out the skirt portion to give the hip portions of the skirt a shaping corresponding to the pair of hips of the child when the dress is worn.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a hanger and shaper for achilds dress which is readily adjustable to fit various sizes of dresses.
Still another object is to provide a hanger and shaper of this type which safely supports the dress without the necessity of extraneous fastening members.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a hanger and shaper of this kind on which the dress may be mounted with a simple movement of the hands of theuser and without any tendency to either damage the dress or so wrinkle the same as to require it being repressed before it can be worn.
For furthercomprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will .be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and 'to the appended claims in which, the various 'novel .features of the invention are more particularly .setforth.
In the accompanying drawings forming, -a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view. of .a dress' ,hangerand shaper embodying one form .of the invention, .a dress being shown supported thereon in dot-dash lines,
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of :the hanger and shaper. j a
.Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the skirt supporting and shaping portion removed from the hanger and vshaper.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of amodifiedform of. sectional skirt supporting and shaping portion, showing the sections in moved and held position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of. the form. of .Fig. 4 showing the sections in freely slidable position.
Fig. .6 is a detailperspective view of the section holding disk of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of still another modified form of sectional skirt supporting .and shaping portion. "Fig. -8 is a'detail perspective view of .the 'sectionfhol'd- 'ing disk of Fig. 7.
2,796,206 Patented June 18, 1957 0 formed of plastic, in bar or rod form, enlarged at its midlength as. indicated at 1 2 to engage through the neck of a garment and holdit open a desirable degree, the opposite end portions of the. bar being suitably shaped to fit the shoulder portions of a garment 13.as illustrated in Fig. 1.. The bar 10 is formed with a series of spaced openings 14 therealong.
Suspended from the hanger 10, there is a one-piece dress form or shaper 15 composed of light but durable spring wire, round in. cross section. The dress form consists of two vertically disposed legs 16, 16 which terminate at one end in a looped portion 17 offset forwardly from the plane of the legs and bar 10 with its ends extending laterally of said legs. The legs diverge slightly away from each other at their top ends and are formed with hooks 18 on said diverging top ends for hooking into the spaced openings 14 in the bar 10. The diverging relationship of the. legs permits ready application of the form to the bar 10 in the desired openings therein without unduly deforming the looped portion 17. When the form is suspended, the looped portion 17 will lie in a horizontal plane. v
. From Fig. 1, it appears clearly how the dress 13 which is hung on hanger 10 now has the front of its skirt portion bulged out by the forwardly extending looped portion 17 to give the front the general contour of the dress when worn by a child .and viewed from a distance in front, while the laterally extending ends of the looped portion 17 give the dress the general contour of the hips of the child and ,the .form in which the dress will appear in elevation from the front when worn. .The legs 16, 16 are disposed inwardly of the ends of the looped portion 17 so that the dress assumes a suitable waist contour above the looped portion, substantially as illustrated.
. 20 and 21. The sections each comprise a shank or fixed leg portion '22 and a leg portion 23 slidably connected thereto and forming an extension thereof. The slidable connection consists of a curved hook 24 on the inner 'end' of 'the leg portion 23 encircling the leg portion 22 intermediate its ends, and a similar curved hook .25 on the outer end of fixed leg portion 22 encircling. the leg portion 23, intermediate its ends. Hooks 26 are. formed on the outer ends of the slidable leg portions 23 for engagement in the openings '14 of the hanger 1.0. The fixed leg portion 22 of each section is bent laterally outwardly at its'bottom end, and then curved forwardly and laterally inwardly to form a loop portion 27. The ends of the looped portions 27 are each extended as indicated at 28 and the extensions 28 are disposed side by side in over- "lapping relation and are slidably interconnected by means of-curved books 29 on the extreme-ends thereof. The looped portions 27 lie in a horizontal plane when the form is suspended from the hanger 10. g
The length of the modified skirt supporting and shaping wardly within the dress to give a high or low waistline elfect or at intermediate positions required. The looped portions 27 may be moved laterally toward and away from each other in order to accommodate dresses of various widths.
Provision is also made for holding the adjustable parts in moved position. For this purpose, a disk 30, of any suitable material, is eccentrically and turnably mounted on each fixed leg portion 22, intermediate its ends. The disk is formed with teeth 31 on the portion of its periphery remote from the opening 32 formed therein so that when the disk is manually turned the slidable leg portion 23 will be camrned outwardly away from the fixed leg portion 22 thereby binding the curved hooked ends against the leg portions and thus preventing relative axial movement of the leg portions in a separating direction. The teeth 31 on the disk releasably hold the leg portion 23 in its binding position.
A similar disk 33, with teeth 34, is eccentrically and turnably mounted on the overlapping extension 28 of the looped portion 27 of section 21 in position to cam the adjacent extension of the looped portion 27 of section outwardly for binding the overlapping extensions of the looped portions against relative axial separating movement.
The modification of the invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8 differs from the form of invention shown in Figs. 4, 5' and 6 in that the material is composed of flat bar stock instead of round wire stock, necessitating sleeves 35 and 36, rectangular in cross section, on the ends of the leg portions 23' and 22, respectively, in place of the respective curved hooks 24 and 25. Sleeves 37 are also formed on the extensions 28' of the looped portions 27' instead of the curved hooks 28. Furthermore, in this modification, each slidable leg portion 23' is formed with a bulged out portion 38 intermediate its ends for coacting with the disk 30' on the adjacent fixed leg portion 22. Similarly, the extension 28' of the looped portion 27' of section 21' is formed with a bulged out portion 39 for cooperation with the disk 33' on the free end of looped portion 27 of section 21.
It is to be understood that a set screw 40 may also be used in the sleeve member35, 36, and 37 to lock the latter at any desired set position, without the lock disks 30 and 34.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
