SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,454, dated May 15, 1883.

. To all whom it may concern:

'Be it known that I, CHARLES JULIUS BRUSCHKE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofas, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention consists in certain improvements in the construction of sofas and other articles of furniture, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective, with a part removed, of a settec constructed in accordance with my improvements. Fig. 2 represents in perspective and in front elevation one of the sides or end pieces of the settee. Fig. 3 is a sectional View, showing the manner of connecting the back and sides of a chair or other article.

In the drawings I have represented my improvements as applied to a settee, and will so describe them; but my improvements are equally well adapted for use in the construction of chairs, sofas, lounges, bedsteads, and other articles of furniture.

The several parts of the desired article of furniture having been constructed in accordance with the above-described improvements, when it is desired to place them together for the purpose of forming the article, the sides, ends, or arms 0 are first secured to the seatframe A, which is done by placing the part 0 with its angular sockets E opposite the angular dovetails B, and sliding said part upon said dovetails. Then, when the part (J is in position against the end of the seat-frame, the pin or thumb-screw F is passed through said part- 0 and engaged with the slot or hole a, by which means these several members can be held readily and firmly secured together. Then the back is slid from the top downwardly between the side frames, the grooved portion K of the rail J engaging with the dovetail strip G, which will prevent the horizontal movement of the parts. The pin or thumbscrew His then passed through the upper end of the part 0 and engaged with the slot or hole 0 in the top of the back I, which will hold the parts securely from individual vertical movement.

If desired, in lieu of connecting the seat and side frames by dowel-pins, and the back and side frames by dovetail connection, the back and side frames may be connected by dowelpins, and the seat and side frames attached together by dovetail connection, as in either this or the before-mei'itioned arrangement the same secure connection and ready removability of the parts would be secured.

It will thus be seen that by these improvements each side or end, back, and seat-frame of an article of furniture is constructed so as to be each readily removable from and applied together, whioh is very important, as articles so constructed in such separable parts can be conveniently stored or packed in small compass, and are thus readily removablefrom place to place. Also, by these improvements each memberof the article can be upholstered separately and apart from the other portions thereof, which is a great advantage, as the work of upholstering can be done better and more quickly than where the article is first built and then upholstered. I

By these improvements I dispense withthe IOC necessity of using glue, nails, screws, or any retaining devices other than those shown and described herein. The parts are secured firml y together bythe angular dowel-pins, dovetail strips and grooves, and removable pins or thumb-screws, and the several parts are mutually steadied and supported in position.-

I am aware that it is not broadly new to connect the separate parts of furniture by means of angular dowels, and that the separate parts of still other articles have been attached together by dovetail connection with a screw passing through the dovetail strips, and such 1 do not claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim 18-- A chair, settee, or other article of furniture having its back provided with dovetail slot K and slot or hole 0, and its seat with angular dowels B and slot or hole a,in combination with the end piece, 0,-havingdovetail strip G, angular sockets E, and removable pins or thumb -screws 0 H, the ,whole constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
