Description

J. F. HUNTER.
Hot Water Apparatus.
' Patented" March 27,- 1860.,
mar/v55 55S UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB E. HUNTER, OF NEIV YORK, N. 'Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, II. A. HUNTER, AND P. I. KELLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-WATER APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,670, dated March 2'7, 1860.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB F. HUNTER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hotater Apparatus for Heating Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical diametrical section taken through my improved apparatus, exhibiting clearly the arrangement of the hot-water pipes, 850. Fig. 2 is an exterior view of the apparatus.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A represents a water back or boiler of any description, which is mounted upon masonry B B, forming the ash-pit C.
D is the grate, and E is the fire-place. This water-back A consists of a hollow cylindrical vessel surrounding the bed of coals and extending up a sufficient distance to form a guard for the bodyot' heated coals to confine them within the fire-place.
F G are two coils of metal tubing coiled spirally and arranged one within the other, which extend up to any desirable height over the fire-chamber and connect with a main pipe J, to which the pipes communicating with the registers in the building are attached, as clearly shown by the drawings, Fig. 1, and from the register a return-pipe is connected, which communicates with the water-back or fire-pot A. In this manner a continuous circulation of the hot water is kept up in the apparatus and throughout the building. The water in its highly-heated state passing up from the fire-back A and through the spiral coils of pipes F G is rapidly heated on account of the great surface exposed to the action of the fire and heated air and a rapid circulation of hot water through the registers or radiating-surfaces, of any shape or description, which maybe disposed throughout the'building.
The entire boiling apparatus is inclosed within a metal casing K, from which the products of combustion are conducted off through an escape-flue L to the chimney.
The cold-water supply and appurtenances employed about my apparatus are similar to those of the same class of invention now in common use, and therefore not necessary to represent or describe.
I do not desire to claim as my invention the use of coils of pipes for hot-water apparatuses irrespective of arrangement; but
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the coils F G with the main pipe J, fire-back A, return-pipe J, and easing K, when the said coils are both con nected with the main pipe J and back A and otherwise constructed, as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
J. F. HUNTER.
