Description

W. BUSHNELLl C ultivator.
N. 27,614. Patented Nm 27, 186m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B'USHN ELL, OF t EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN CU LTIVATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,614, dated March 27, 1860.
To atl whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BUsHNELL, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gang-Blows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref'erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my in vention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures. t
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
A represents a beam, to the back part ot which a plow, a, is attached, and B B are two beams having similar plows, b b, attached to their back lends. The beams B B are connected by joints c to the ends of bars (l C, which pass loosely through the beam A, and are pivoted to it at about their centers, as `shown clearly in Fig. 1. rEhe bars G C are allowed to turn in the beam A, the mortises through which they pass being sufticiently long to admit of it.
In the outer part of the beam A a pulley, D, is titted horizontally. This pulley has a toothed periphery, and a chain, E, passes around its outer side, the ends ot' said chain being attached to the front ends of the beams B B. The links of the chain E work or it on the teeth of the pulley D, and the chain is provided at one end with a swivel-screw link, F. The pulley D has holes d made through it near its periphery, said holes being in a circle concentric with the pulley, as shown in Fig. 1, and the hole cis made vertically through the beam A, said hole c being in linewith the circle of holes in the pulley, so that a pin,f, may pass through either of holes d, as may be desired.
To the front end of the beam A the draftpower is applied, and to the back part of each beam B B a handle, G, is attached.
It will be seen from the above description that the bars G C admit ofthe beams B B being adjusted nearer to or farther from each other and the central beam, A, as may be desired, and that consequently the plows c b b may be adjusted nearer together or farther apart, according to the width of the area of ground it is desired to have the plows act upon as the implement is drawn along.
The beams B B are prevented from casually' moving by means of the chain E, toothed pnlley D, and pinj', the latter retaining 'the pulley D, and the teeth of the pulley holds the chain. Each time the beams B B are adjusted, which is permitted by withdrawing pinf, the chain E is lengthened or shortened to correspond to the space between the beams B B by turning the swivel-link F, it being essential that the chain E be kept taut at all times in order to retain the beams B B in proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the central beam, A,
movable bars B B, pivoted connecting-bars C C, adjustable chain-wheel D, chain E, and plows b, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
