(Cl. 33-170) This invention relates to measuring tools and instru ments adapted to be used by machinists and particularly gauges designed for accurately measuring height on planers, lathes, and similar machines, and in particular, a height gauge having a gauge-block retaining slider adjustably mounted on an arm extended from a sleeve adjustably mounted on a post of the gauge.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an attachment for a height gauge whereby most of the gauge blocks required for building up from the base to the desired height are eliminated.
In measuring the height on planers, lathes, and similar machine tools, the distance is built up with gauge blocks of varying dimensions and this not only necessitates making calculations by requires considerable time. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates a height gauge attachment wherein a gauge block of a predetermined size is positioned on the upper surface of a slider carried by an arm extended from a sleeve and wherein the position of the sleeve is accurately adjusted by a micrometer screw.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a height gauge whereby the height is adapted to be accurately set with a single gauge block with the gauge block carried by a sleeve adjustably mounted on a post.
Another object of the invention is to provide a height gauge in which a common gauge block is adapted to be used for a comparatively large range of sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a height gauge attachment in which the use of a single gauge block only is required and in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention embodies a base having a post extended upwardly therefrom, a sleeve slidably mounted on the post, a set collar also mounted on the post and connected to the sleeve with a screw and a slider for mounting a gauge block adjustably mounted on a horizontally disposed arm extended from said sleeve.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the improved height gauge attachment showing a gauge block positioned on a slider and in Which part of the slider is broken away with the interior thereof shown in section.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the attachment taken on line 22 of Figure 1, the gauge block being shown in broken lines and the parts being shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a view looking upwardly toward the lower end of the attachment, taken on line 33 of Figure 2, the head of the thumb screw being omitted and the shank of the screw being shown in section.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the slider showing the parallel longitudinally disposed slots extended therethrough.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section through the slider being taken on line 55 of Figure 4, the arm upon which the slider is positioned being shown in broken lines.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved height gauge attachment of this invention includes a slider 10 mounted on an arm 11 extended from a sleeve 12, the sleeve being slidably mounted on a post 13 extended upwardly from a base 14 and being accurately positioned by a nut 15 threaded on a screw 16 in a set collar 17, and the slider 10 being adjustably held on the arm 11 with a thumb screw 18.
The base 14 is adapted to be positioned on a lathe or planer bed with the post 13 being perpendicular to the bed and with the sleeve 12 adapted to slide vertically on the post.
The position of the sleeve 12 is controlled by the nut 15 on the screw 16 in the collar 17, the screw 16 being secured in a lug 19 at the upper end of the sleeve and the set collar being secured in adjusted positions on the post with a thumb screw 20.
By this means the sleeve 12 is accurately positioned whereby the upper surface 21 of the slider 19 is positioned a desired distance from the lathe or planer bed, as indicated by the numeral 22, and with the surface 21 positioned to the desired height, the sleeve 12 is retained in position on the post 13 with a thumb screw 23.
The upper surface 21 of the slider 10 is provided with parallel longitudinally disposed grooves or slots, as indicated by the numeral 24 to facilitate cleaning the upper surface of the slider and the lower surface of the slider is provided with a web 25 which provides an elongated threaded opening 26 for the shank 27 of the thumb screw 18.
The slider 10 is also provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 28 through which the arm 11 extends and with the parts formed in this manner the slider may readily be removed and replaced and the position thereof on the arm readily adjusted.
With the height gauge of this invention, the slider 10 upon which a gauge block, as indicated by the numeral 29, is positioned may be accurately set so that the necessity of using a plurality of gauge blocks of diiferent sizes to build up a certain height is obviated.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
I. In a height gauge attachment, the combination which comprises a base having a post extended perpendicularly therefrom, a sleeve having an arm extended therefrom slidably mounted on the post, means for clamping the sleeve in adjusted positions on the post, means for adjusting the sleeve vertically on the post, a slider having a horizontally disposed upper surface with spaced horizontally disposed grooves therein positioned on the arm extended from the sleeve, the horizontally disposed upper surface of the slider being parallel to the lower surface of the base, a gauge block of an accurate, predetermined dimension positioned on the horizontally disposed surface of the slider and means for clamping the slider in adjusted positions on said arm.

In a height gauge attachment, the combination which comprises a base having a post extended upwardly therefrom, said post being positioned perpendicular to the lower surface of the base, a sleeve having an arm extended therefrom slidably mounted on the post, a set collar also mounted on the post and positioned above the sleeve, a screw mounted in the sleeve and extended through said set collar, a nut threaded on the screw and positioned in a slot in the set collar whereby with the set collar in a fixed position on the post the elevation of the sleeve is adjusted by turning the nut on the screw,
tudinally disposed grooves therein slidably mounted on the arm extended from the sleeve, a gauge block of accurate, predetermined dimension positioned on the horizontally disposed upper surface of the slider and a thumb screw threaded in the slider for clamping the slider in adjusted positions on said arm.
3. In a height gauge attachment, the combination which comprises a base having a post extended upwardly therefrom, said post being positioned perpendicular to the lower surface of the base, a sleeve having an arm extended therefrom slidably mounted on the post, a set collar also mounted on the post and positioned above the sleeve, a screw mounted in the sleeve and extended through said set collar, a nut threaded on the screw and positioned in a slot in the set collar whereby with the set collar in a fixed position on the post the elevation of the sleeve is adjusted by turning the nut on the screw, a thumb screw threaded in the sleeve for clamping the sleeve in adjusted positions on the post, a slider having an upper surface adapted to receive a gauge block slidably mounted on the arm extended from the sleeve, said slider having spaced longitudinally disposed slots in the upper surface, and a thumb screw threaded in the slider for clamping the slider in adjusted positions on said arm.
