Application October 28, 1954, Serial No. 465,191
11 Claims. (Cl. 155-45).
My invention relates to improvements in combination furniture.
The principal object of my invention is to providea chair and cabinet combination with means for converting the same into a bed.
Another object is to provide combination. furniture as above set forth in which the cabinet forms. a part of the bed and is extensible vertically to increase theheight of the bed at its foot part and also to incline an intermediate. part of the bed whereby invalids may repose on. the bed with their feet elevated and their legs from the hips comfortably supported.
Still another object is to provide combination furniture for the above purpose which is adapted to be converted into a chair with a cabinet beneath the seat available as a foot rest.
Still another object is to provide in such furniture'a sectional cabinet of study practical construction which is'vertically extensible easily by raising an inner section in an outer section.
Still another object is to provide a cabinet as in the above which includes means for supporting a sewing machine, for swinging into the cabinet when not in use, and to further provide the cabinet with a folding leaf for covering the cabinet or swinging to one side thereof in variably inclined positions, to form said intermediate portion of the bed.
Other and subordinate objects together with the precise nature of my improvements will become apparent when the following description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a view in perspective of my combination furniture converted into a bed;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 and with parts shown in broken lines;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view in perspective of the furniture converted into a chair;
Figure 4 is an enlarged view in vertical section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view in front elevation of the cabinet with the leaf unfolded and the cabinet supporting a sewing machine and the inner section of the cabinet raised;
Figure 6 is a View in side elevation of the same;
Figure 7 is an enlarged view in horizontal section taken on the line 77 of Figure 1;
Figure 8 is a view in plan of the cabinet with the inner section raised and the top panel thereof removed;
Figure 9 is a fragmentary enlarged view of the supporting means for the folding leaf, and
Figure 10 is a fragmentary enlarged view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section of one legof a bracket forming part of the supporting means for the folding leaf.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved combination furniture, in the preferred embodiment thereof, comprisesa chair 1 and a cabinet 3 which, when converted into a bed 5 form in the preferred embodiment of the invention a chaise longue.
The chair 1 is-of the upholstered type, except the seat with front and rear corner legs 7, 8, closed sides 9, arms 11, a back rest 13, a foldable head rest 14 supported by braces 15, a lower back panel 16 closing the back of the chair below the seat, and a flat seat panel 17. The rear legs 8 are supported by casters 19.
The cabinet 3 comprises an outer section 21 and an inner section 23 adapted to be raised in and seated on the outer section 21 to increase the height of the cabinet. Both sections 21, 23 are rectangular with open fronts facing in one and the same direction, as best shown in Figure l.
The. outer section 21 comprises a bottom panel 25 having a set back concave front edge 27 for leg room purposes, side panels 29, a back panel 31, a pair of vertical cleats 33' on the front edges of the side walls 29 extending inwardly of said side walls 29 and spaced forwardly of the bottom panel 25 for a purpose presently seen, and a pair of bottom cleats 35 supporting said section 21 at opposite sides thereof and on which said panel 25 is suitably secured and having mounted in opposite ends thereof caster wheels 37 for rollably supporting the cabinet 3; Front corner slots 39 are provided in the panel 25 for a purpose to be explained and the outer section 21 is open at its top as best shown in Figures 1, 2 and 8. Center upper edge notches 41 are provided in the upper edges of the side panels 29 and a similar notch 43 in the upper edge of the back panel 31 for insertion of the hands thereing in lifting the inner section 23 in a manner presently clear.
The inner cabinet section 23 comprises a bottom panel 45 like the bottom panel 25 slidable between the side panels 29 of the outer section 21, side panels 47 rising from said bottom panel 45 and a back panel 49 also rising from said bottom panel 45 and a top panel 51 from which the side panels 47 are suspended and which overhangs the side panels 47 and rests on the upper edges of the side panels 29 of the outer section 21' when the inner section 23 is fully lowered into the outer section 21, as shown in Figure 2, whereby to suspend the inner section 23 from said side panels 29 in the fully lowered position of the inner sections 23. The side panels 47 of the inner section 23 are spaced from the side panels 29 of the outer section 21 for a purpose presently clear. A pair of vertical rear guide bars 56 on opposite sides of the inner section 23 slidably engaging the side panels 29 of the lower section 21 steady said inner section while being raised and lowered.
A pair of vertical external cleats 55 on front vertical edges of the side panels 47 of the inner section 23 overlap and slidably engage the cleats 33 while the inner section 23 is being raised from fully lowered to fully raised position shown in Figures 5 and 6 and thereby maintain the inner section 23 spaced slightly forwardly in the outer section until said inner section 23 is fully raised. When fully raised, the inner section 23' may then be moved rearwardly to seat its cleats 55 on the upper ends of the cleats 33 and to seat the rear edge of its bottom panel 45 on the upper edge of the rear panel 31 of the outer section 21 whereby said inner section 23 is supported in fully raised position by said outer section 21.
As will be obvious, in raising the inner section 23, the top panel 51 thereof may be grasped by hands inserted through the notches 41 and said inner section 23 lifted by hand. into fully raised position and then shoved rearwardly by hand into supported position. However, other means for this purpose may be provided, for instance, jacking means (not shown) since the same forms no part of this invention.
The upper front. corners of the side panels 29 of the outer section 21 are notched, as at 61, to provide stops 63 for engagement by the cleats 55 in the fully raised position of the inner section 23 if said inner section 23 is shoved rearwardly a limited distance whereby to prevent said inner section from being shoved completely rearwardly off the outer section 21.
As will be understood, prior to lowering of the inner section 23 into the outer section 21, which is accomplished manually by the hands grasping opposite sides of the top panel 51, the inner section 23 must be shoved forwardly to move it off the rear panel 31 of the lower section 21 and to move its cleats 55 off the cleats 33 of the outer section. For so moving the inner section 23, a pair of upright lever arms 65 are provided on the outer sides and front portions of the side panels 47 of the inner section 23 to be raised and lowered in the spaces between the side panels 47, 29 and are pivoted intermediate their ends as at 67 for vertical rocking movement to swing their lower ends rearwardly against stop pins 68 on the side panels 29 of the outer section and thereby slide the inner section 23 forwardly. Strap metal handles 71 on the upper ends of said lever arms overlying the upper ends of cleats 55 provide for manually swinging said lever arms 65. As best shown in Figure 7, when the inner section is fully lowered, the lower ends of the lever arms 65 engage in the beforementioned slots 39 and behind the cleats 33 to prevent the inner section 23 from being pulled forwardly out of the outer section 21.
The beforementioned leaf designated 69 and forming the intermediate portion of the bed is hinged at one end, as at 70, to one side edge of the top panel 51 of the inner section 23 for vertical swinging over said top to cover the same or for swinging into outstanding position for coupling to the chair 1 at the front edge of the seat panel 17 by the following means. An inverted channel bar 73 is suitably fixed to the other end of the leaf 69 to hook downwardly in a transverse angle bar 75 in front of the seat panel 17 secured to the front legs 7 as by brackets 77. The channel bar 73 fulcrums on the angle bar 75 so that when the inner section 23 of the cabinet is fully lowered, as shown in full lines in Figures 1 and 2, said leaf is substantially horizontal and level with the seat panel 17 and the top panel 51 of the cabinet to form a level bed with the chair 1, whereas, when the inner section 23 of the cabinet 3 is fully raised, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, said leaf 69 inclines upwardly and forwardly of the chair to form a correspondingly inclined leg rest for the purpose previously described.
Referring now particularly to Figures 3 and 4, the leaf 69 may be uncoupled from the chair 1 and with the inner section 23 lowered, the cabinet 3 may be rolled under the chair seat panel 17 to provide a chair with an open end cabinet beneath its seat. In this connection, it is to be noted that when the cabinet 3 is rolled under the chair seat panel 17, it lifts the front legs 7 off the floor and supports the chair 1 at its front. For this purpose, the sides 9 of the chair 1 are internally recessed, as at 81, to fit over the cabinet 3.
As shown in dotted lines in Figures 1 and 4, a mattress 83 may be provided for the bed 5 and this mattress, when the cabinet 3 is rolled under the chair seat panel 17, may be draped over the back 13 and head rest 14 of the chair 1 and allowed to hang down and conceal the cabinet 3 A particular feature of my invention is that the cabinet 3 is adapted to be used alone and as a sewing machine cabinet. For this purpose, the top panel 51 is adapted to have hinged thereto, as at 87, the bed 89 of a sewing machine 91 for swinging upwardly out of a central opening 93 in said top panel 51 for use, as shown in Figure J -5, or for swinging downwardly through said opening 93 into the inner section of the cabinet 3 for storage of the sewing machine. Any conventional means may be provided to support the bed 89 in upswung position, for inbracket 95 is detachably attached, as by a hinge 97, to one stance, a pivoted arm 94 on the bed 89 for swinging over 1 ,said panel 51. A suitable extensible pivoted elbow type side panel 47 of the inner section 23 of the cabinet 3 and which may be swung upwardly for propping said leaf 69 up in difierent positions when desired to form a supporting shelf for material being sewed, as when the sewing machine 91 is in use, said bracket 95, as best shown in Figure 9, having a free lower end 99 adapted to rest on the bottom panel 45 of the inner section 23 of the cabinet 3. For propping the leaf 69 in dilferent positions, the bracket 95 is provided with an extensible and contractile leg 92 of angle bar sections 96, 98 suitably slidably connected by a fastener screw 100 in the section 98 sliding in a slot 101 in the section 96 and adapted to be tightened to retain said leg 92 in extended or contracted position. A removable panel 101 closes the opening 93 being supported by the top panel 51 flush therewith as shown in Figure 2.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
