CATCH FOR A CARDBOARD BOX OR THE LIKE Filed April 23, 1955 FIG.I
LEWIS DOUGLAS YOUNG ATTOR N EYS nited States Patent CATCH FOR A CARDBOARD BOX OR THE LIKE Lewis Douglas Young, Providence, R. 1., assignor to Douglas Young, Inc., a corporation of Rhode Island Application April 23, 1953, Serial No. 350,581
2 Claims. (Cl. 229-47) This invention relates to a catch for securing the free edges of a hinged box, more particularly a box of some soft material such as cardboard, so that the free edges may be released to be swung about their hinge connectlon.
The usual catches which have heretofore been employed for securing the free edges of a hinged box together comprise a pair of plates which are attached to the front walls of the cover and body sections of the box by pins or rivets which pass through openings in the plates. This requires considerable hand operation and is expensive to assemble in position.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a catch, each of the parts of which may be secured to the front wall of the box by a single blow after the parts are placed in the desired position.
Another object of the invention is to provide attaching means which will be integral and one piece with the plates of the parts which are to be attached so that there need be no separate handling of staples or rivets for attaching purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment which will better secure the plate to the front wall of the box and integrate the plate with the front wall of the box so that the hinged plates may be made of lighter stock and yet will be sufficiently strong for the purpose for which they are designed.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attach ing means which will have its attachment formed in a plurality of small prongs spread over a greater area and thus one which will be stronger and yet less noticeable on the interior of the box than attachments which have heretofore been had.
Another object of the invention is to provide the attachment on the inner surface of the front wall of the box which will not protrude into the box but rather the holding means will be substantially flush with the inner surface of the front wall of the box to which the catch is attached.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a box with one form of catch employing this invention positioned thereon;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on substantially line 2-2 of Figure 1 showing a fragmental portion of the box;
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the inner face of each of the catch members prior to their assembly on the box.
in proceeding with this invention, I provide a pair of sheet metal members of each catch member by providing an opening with the stock which is taken from that opening forming prongs around the edge of the opening, which are of such form and shape that they may be driven into a box of soft material such as cardboard and crimped 2,751,139 Patented June 19, 1956 of the box with a single blow and causing the clenchingaction over the back wall of the box as a result of this single blow.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body section of the box having a bottom wall 11, an upstanding front wall 12, with a corresponding rear wall and opposite side walls 14. The cover section is designated generally 15 and has a top wall 16, front wall 17, with a corresponding rear wall and with opposite side walls 18, all of which depend from the top wall 16. These upstanding and depending walls of the two sections are hinged together along the abutting edges of the back walls of the sections in known manner so as to direct the upstanding and depending edges into abutting relation when the box is closed.
In order to hold this box in closed position, I provide a securing means which I will designate generally 20 and which comprises a pair of catch members designated generally 21 on the wall 17 and 22 on the wall 12. Each of these catch members is formed of a plate 23 for the member 21 and 24 for the member 22. Each of these plates is provided with a plurality of openings which I will designate 25. These openings are generally circular in shape, and from the edge of the opening there extend a plurality of prongs or projections 26. I have illustrated four such projections about each opening in the present illustration although this number may be varied. Each of these projections 26 is of arcuate shape, which stiffens the same materially and permits of the projection being driven through a cardboard wall such as 12 or 17 by a single blow on the plate from which the projection extends. The projections are inclined outwardly from a central axis of the opening perpendicular to the plate so that when the plate is positioned against the front of the front wall and struck with a hammer blow to drive the projections through the wall against an anvil which engages the inner surface of the Wall, the tip of the projection 26 will be deflected outwardly as at 27 away or outwardly from the center of the opening and thus provide a clinch for securing the plate firmly in position. The tips 27 are embedded in the wall through which they extend so that the inner surface of the wall remains substantially flush with no projections beyond it.
The two plates 23 and 24 are equipped with some sort of detachable connection. Thus, there is a stud 30 provided on the plate 24 extending outwardly therefrom, while the plate 23 has a latch 31 hinged thereon by a pintle 32 which extends through eyes 33 on the plate and 34 on the member 31, this latch being provided with a hole 35 which may receive the stud 30 therein so as to hold the parts in closed position. There may be a slight inclination downwardly of the stud 30 so that the parts will have to give some in the initial clasping and will tend to be held in clasped position after once so positioned.
A paper cover over the wall of the box on both inner and outer surfaces is illustrated although this is not essential.
I claim:
1. In a cardboard box, a body section and a cover section, each having vertically disposed back and front walls with their edges abutting, means to hinge the back walls together, means for detachably connecting the front walls comprising a catch member for each front wall, each having a metal plate extending along the outer surface of the front wall only of each section, each plate having a plurality of holes along its length with a plurality of integral projections along the edge of each hole embedded in the front wall over which the plate extends with the free ends of the projections deflected outwardly in a plurality of different directions and clinched over the inner surface of the front wall of the section and firmly securing the plate to the section, detachable connecting means comprising a part carried by one plate and a second part carried by the other plate, said parts being engageable to hold the pair of sections of the box closed and detachable for opening the box.
' 2. In a cardboard box as in claim 1 wherein the projections along the edge of each hole are arcuate in cross section.
