UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER A. SAUNDERS AND JOHN S. FUNKHOUSER, OF MOUNT CRAWFORD, VIRGINIA.
GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 275,082, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed August 14, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LUTHER A. SAUNDERS and JOHN S. FUNKHOUSER, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Crawford, in the countyofRockingham and State ofVirginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in gate-latches; and the object is to produce a gate-latch that is reliable in its operation, not liable to get out of order, very simple in its construction, and can be produced at a very moderate cost.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and more specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters indicate like parts in thedifferent figures of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation with the cover or top removed. Fig. 2 is a view of the cover detached.
In the drawings, A represents the shell or case, in which is arranged the sliding latch B, having notches F and I. A hook, O, is attached to a pin or pivot, E, secured in the shell, and a partition divides-the shell into two parts. In the upper part of the shell is pivoted a lockbolt, D, on a pin, H, so as to engage with the notch I when the latch is locked. To release this lock-bolt, a hole, J, is provided in the shell, through which a small piece of iron or wire is inserted whenever it is desired. The book 0 is so pivoted as to swing under and hold the latch B until it is struck and released, when it will drop, and by the lock-bolt D, which then engages with the notch I, it will be locked. A cover, K, or lid is secured to the shell, so as to protect the interior and prevent tampering with the parts.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat out, is-
The combination of a shell, A, and latch B, having notches F and I, with the hook O and lock-bolt D, pivoted on a pin, H, and the cover K, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
