FRANK WV. BARKER, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,454, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed October 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it mwgiooncom Be it known that I, FRANK W. BARKER, of
of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful lmprovementin Cradles; and I dohereby declare the same to be described in the followin g specification and represented in the no companying drawings, of which- Figure l is a front elevation of a cradle embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of its clock-movement.
The nature of my present invention is de- In such drawings, A denotes the crib of the cradle, and B the supporting stand of such crib, the two being constructed and arranged as represented, or in an y other suitable manner. Extending down from the crown of the arch a of the stand is a spiral spring, U, which at its lower end is attached to the crib-sustaining bail D, provided with eyes or bends b I) to receive hooks c 0, extending from the arch. Fastened on the arch, at its crown, is a clock or time-piece movement, E, having to one of the arbors of its gears a crank, 01, which by means of a rod, 6, depending from its wrist, is connected with one of the coils of the spiral spring. Furthermore, there is over the crib a fan, F, which is supported by two rods or Wires, G and H, arranged with it and the arch of the stand, in manner as shown, and pivoted to the fan.
On the mainspring of the clock movement being wound up, it the crib be pressed downward sufliciently and nextallowed to rise freely, the crank will continue to revolve, and, with the connecting-rod, \villeflect a reciprocating vertical movement of the spring and crib, such spring and crib serving the purpose of a pendulum and an escapement to regulate or rttard the running down of the clock-movement. As the crib may more up and down, a vibratory upand-down motion will be imparted to the fan.
From the above it will be seen that by means as above explained the crib may he vibrated vertically and automatically and at regular intervals, thus saving much labor and attention in comparison to what'would be expended in operating by manual power a crib through means as described in the United States Patent numbered 260,823, and granted to me, and dated July 11, 1882.
I claim-- The combination of the crib and the spiral spring, and the clock-movement applied to the supporting-stand of the said crib, and provided with the crank and connecting-rod, all being adapted and to operate substantially as set forth.
