Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ARMSTRONG, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,340, dated March 6i, 1860.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN ARMSTRONG, of the city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Boiler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front end elevation of aboiler constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same in the plane indicated by the line a: m, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same in the plane indicated by the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. et is a horizontal section of the same in the plane indicated by the line .e e in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in a certain novel combination and arrangement of a series of upright water-vessels, horizontal connectingcylinders, and lues constituting a very effective and durable boiler.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and/use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A A are the upright water-vessels, of which there may be two or more of a width and height according to the desired capacity of the boiler, arranged one behind the other on a suitable foundation at some distance apart.
B B are the horizontal connecting-cylinders, of which there may be two or more tiers arranged one above the other, two or more in each tier, between each water-vesselA and the one next behind and in front of it. The cylinders of each tier are arranged very near each other, but not so close asl to prevent the circulation between them of the gases of combustion. Vhatever the number of vessels A A A', one forms the front and another the rear portion of the boiler. The front one A has framed in it the tire-doors a, one or more, and every other one has a suitable number of short flues b b passing directly through it, the capacity of such iiues being adequate to the requirements of a good draft. The cylinders B B are inclosed within upright walls C O of masonry, which are close to the sides of the water-vessels A A A', and frointhese walls masonry is built in laterally toward the upper cylinders, meeting the outer cylinders of the tier i-n such manner (shown at d cl in Fig. 3) as to leave a portion of them exposed above it. The spaces between the cylinders in the upper tier are also filled in with masonry or otherwise covered in, as shown at c in Fig. 3. The vessels A A extend some distance upward above the tops of the upper tier of cylinders B B.
Between the walls O O and in rear of the front vessel A the grate or grates D are placed at an elevation of some distance above the bottoms of the several vessels A A A', and in rear of the vessel A, which forms the back of the boiler, the walls O O' and roof-like portion c CZ d of the setting unite with a wall E, which is arranged far enough behind the said vessel A to form a smoke or gas chamber F for the reception of the smoke and gaseous products of combustion escaping from the fire-grate through the ues b b in the watervessels A A. From this chamber F returnlues G G, uniting with the rear of the back Water-vessel A and the front of the front one A', lead through the several cylinders B B to a breechiug G outside the front of the boiler, and above this breechiug is the chimney I-I. The boiler is kept supplied with water nearly to the tops of the upper tier of cylinders B B, or suiiciently high to keep the upper returnlues B B well covered. The lame and gaseous products of combustion circulate between and around the lo wer tier or tiers ot cylinders B B and between and under the bottoms of the upper tier through the iiues b b to the chamber F, and from thence through the return-fines G G to the breechiug G', which conveys them to the chimney. The direct iues b b, return-dues G G, and cylinders B B and the middle portions of the vessels A A A present in the aggregate an extensive heatingsurface, while the upper portions of the upper series of cylinders B B and of the vessels A A A' constitute steam-spaces, and the lower portions of the said vessels, where the water is kept comparatively cool, serve for the collection of any sedimentary matter that may be precipitated from the water. The upper portions or steam-spaces of the vessels A A A may be severally connected with a steamchamber arranged above them, and the lower portions of the said vessels may be provided with mnd-valves to enable the sedimentary matter to be blown out from time totime.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the upright Watervessels A A A horizontal connecting-cylinders B B, and fiues b b, the said vessels A A A being arranged substantially as described, so that their upper portions may constitute steam-spaces and their lower parts sedimentn collectors, as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the said upright Water-vessels A A A', horizontal connecting-cylders B B, and ues b Z9, the return-fines G G, passing through the said Water-vessels and connecting-cylinders, as herein specified.
l JOHN ARMSTRONG.
