Description

S. SHORT.
EGG 0R BATTER BEATER.
No. 273,173. Y Patented Peb.27, 1883.
'ATENT FHCE;
SAMUEL SHORT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
EGG OR BATTER BEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,173, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed December 4, 1882. (No model.)
Improvements in Egg or Batter Beaters, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Theobject of the invention is the production of a heater capable of beating eggs or batter with less labor and more rapidly than i could heretofore be done by hand or by other heaters now in use.
My invention consists of a stationary beater provided with cross-bars or arms arranged at suitable distances apart, cast in one piece with the shaft, and connected to a handle, to which is geared a crown-wheel adapted to engage with a peculiarly-shaped pinion, which answers the double purpose of imparting a revolving motion to a frame provided with cross-bars or arms cast in one piece with the frame, and of supporting the upper end of said frame, and also in the details of constructi0n,all as hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing a front elevation, partly in perspective, of an egg or batter heater is shown.
The letter A designates a heater made of metal, provided with cross-bars or arms a, cast in one piece; and B designates a frame, also of metal, and provided with cross-bars or arms b, cast in one piece, the cross-bars or arms b, as the frame B moves, being adapted to revolve in the spaces between the bars a, the bars a remaining stationary in the spaces between the bars I). The lower end of the stem S of the beater A is contracted to fit in an open slot, 8, in the lower end of the frame B, and the upper end of the stem S screws into a handle, H, also cast in one piece. Near the upper end of the stem S, a shoulder, X, is formed, and between this shoulder X and the lower end of the handle H a pinion, P, is set, and rotates loosely on the stem S. The upper end of the frame B is provided with an open slot, in which the stem S rests, and the pinion P is provided with sleeves c, which grasp both sides of the upper end of the frame B and hold it firmly in position.
: motion revolves the frame B, the beaterAremaining stationary.
It will be seen that the slot at the upper end of the frame is on one side and the slot at the lower end on the other, thus bringing the central portions of the cross-bars 11 against the stem S, between the cross-bars a, and preventing any displacement of the heater or frame. The central portions of the cross-bars are also slightly concave where they bear against the stem S, to facilitate the revolving motion of the bars when the frame is operated, and to lessen the strain on the beater and frame.
In most egg-heaters heretofore in use a central vacuum is created, driving the material to be beaten away from the beater, whereas by my invention this is obviated, the fans creating a current and drawing the material to the beater.
My heater is also especially adapted for beating batter, as it is much stronger than heaters heretofore in use.
By my invention I do away with the necessity of solder-joints, the heater and its crossbars, the frame and its cross-bars, and the handle, being eachcast in one piece, thereby requiring less labor in manufacture and considerably lessening the cost of the complete article, and at the same time increasing its stantially as herein shown and described, for
the purposes set forth.
2. A movable frame the ends of which are slotted on opposite sides to receive the stem ICO 2 evenin of a stationary beater having a series of crossherein shown and described, for the purposes bars or arms, said frame being provided with a, series of cross-bars or arms having concave central portions bearing against the stem of the beater, between its cross-bars or arms, and
adapted to be held in place and rotated by means of a pinion, to which motion is imparted by a crown-Wheel, substantially as set forth. IO
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. i
