United States PatentO I 2,701,604 PLAY SWING APPARATUS Rudolph A. St. Louis, Boston, Mass., assignor to St. Louis Playground Equipment Corp., Quincy, Mass., a corporation Application April 8, 1953, Serial No. 347,452
4 Claims. (Cl. 155-58) This invention relates to play swing apparatus.
One object of my invention is to provide play swing apparatus having a seat extending completely around it, on which children may sit as they swing.
Another object is to provide such swing apparatus with improved suspension means that also serves to support the seat.
A further object is to make said swing apparatus of relatively few and simple parts that can easily be assembled together and which is economical to manufacture.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of my play swing apparatus.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view thereof.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of play swing apparatus.
As illustrated, my swing apparatus may be hung on a supporting framework 10 which rests on the ground or floor or may be embedded in cement. This framework, as shown, has a pair of the usual diagonally extending legs 12 at opposite sides which are connected to an overhead bar 14 by well known fittings 16. Chains 18, or other hanging instrumentalities, are attached to said overhead bar 14 and hang downwardly, from which is suspended my swing apparatus.
Said apparatus has suspension means including an upper cross bar 22 to each end of which is attached a triangularly-shaped support 24 which has a pair of legs 26 extending diagonally downward and outward which are joined by a gusset plate 28 welded thereto at the top. A connecting ring 29 is attached to said plate 28 to receive a chain 18. At the lower ends of each pair of legs 26 is a supporting cross rod 30 forming the lower part of said triangular support 24 and which supports a seat 42, later described, and which cross rod is joined to said legs 26 by fittings 32. Said supporting rods 30 each have extension portions 34 at opposite ends.
Two other seat supporting rods 36 extend between, and are connected to said supporting rods 30 by welding to said fittings 32. They extend at right angles to said rods 30, as shown, and adjacent the end of each said rod 36 an extension portion 38 at both ends is welded to fittings 32.
A hand rail 40 is formed by four rods 41 that extend between said legs 26, being fixed thereto at points intermediate the top and bottom of each said triangular support 24, being a comfortable distance above said seat 42 to serve its purpose for children to grasp.
Said seat 42 is supported by said extensions 34 and 38 respectively, thus providing an endless seat formed of two pairs of members shown as wood boards 44 which rest on said extensions 34, and Wood boards 45 which rest on said extensions 38. Said boards 44 and 45 are joined together at their ends. Said seat is attached to said suspension means by pin members shown as bolts 46 that extend through them and through holes in said rods 30 and 36 and their extensions 34 and 38 respectively. Nuts 48 screw-threadedly attached to said bolts 46 hold the assembly firmly together.
In the modified swing apparatus shown in said Figure 6 a chain 56 is attached to said overhead bar 14 and connected to an S-hook 58 attached at the top of suspension means 60. The latter has two U-shaped supports 64, each of which has two legs extending diagonally outward and downward, and each leg has a laterally extending extension 66 providing support for an endless seat 70 similar to said seat 42. Said seat 70 is attached to said extensions 66 by pins or bolts 72 that extend through both. A hand rail is attached to said tubes 64 at all four legs and extends around said suspension means 60 at a point between the upper and lower extremities thereof. Said seat 70 may be formed as a unit, as by dovetailing or otherwise uniting four boards together. Also said seat may be made of four members with each corner reinforced by a span member directly below and spanning the joint where two seat members abut. In this construction the bolts 72 extend through the seat members at the abutting joint and through said sections 66 and into said span members underneath said seat members.
What I claim is:
1. Play swing apparatus comprising suspension means embodying an upper cross bar and two triangularly-shaped supports attached to said bar at opposite ends, each said support embodying two legs extending diagonally outward and downward, and a cross rod extending between and connected to said two legs, said rod having extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, and two other rods extending between said triangularly-shaped supports and connected to said first-mentioned cross rods and each embodying two extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, and a continuous seat embracing the lower ends of the legs and supported by said extension portions.
2. Play swing apparatus comprising suspension means embodying an upper cross bar and two triangularly-shaped supports attached to said bar at opposite ends, each said support embodying two legs extending diagonally outward and downward, and a cross rod extending between and connected to said two legs, said rod having extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, and two other rods extending between said triangularlyshaped supports and connected to said first-mentioned cross rods and each embodying extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, a continuous seat embracing the lower ends of the legs and supported by said four extension portions, and pin members extending through said seat and extension portions holding them together.
3. Play swing apparatus comprising suspension means embodying an upper cross bar and two triangularly-shaped supports attached to said bar at opposite ends, each said support embodying two legs extending diagonally outward and downward, and a cross rod extending between and connected to said two legs, said rod having extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, two other rods extending between said triangularly-shaped supports and connected to said first-mentioned cross rods and each having extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, and a continuous seat embracing the lower ends of the legs and embodying four members, each said seat member extending over and between two of said extension portions and attached thereto.
4. Play swing apparatus comprising suspension means embodying an upper cross bar and two triangularlyshaped supports attached to said bar at opposite ends, each said support embodying two legs extending diagonally outward and downward, and a cross rod extending between and connected to said two legs, said rod having extension portions extending laterally beyond said legs, two other rods extending between said triangularly-shaped supports and connected to said first-mentioned cross rods and each having extension portions extending laterally Patented Feb. 8, 1955- (.1,v beylclmd said legs, and a seatdembodying folr members, References Cited in the file of this patent eac said seat member exten ingover and etweerr two of said extension portions and attached thereto, said UNITED STATES PATENTS boards being joined together to provide an endless seat 408,742 Parsons Aug. 13, 1889 around said suspension means, and a hand rail attached 5 715,668 Kiddie Dec. 9, 1902 to and extending between said four legs. above said seat. 1,435,984 Schake Nov. 21, 1922 FOREIGN PATENTS 247,851 Great Britain Feb. 25, 1926
