Description

W. E. SEGER RANCH PLIERS June 15, 1954 Filed May 28, 1951 INVENTOR WZZZz'amESe ATTORNEYS Patented June 15, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RANCH PLIERS William E. Seger, Los Angeles', Calif. Application May 28, 1951, Serial No. 228,676
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to combination tools.
An object of this invention is to provide a combination tool known as a ranch pliers which is designed for use in settin up and repairing wire fences particularly barbed wire fences.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination tool which is so constructed and arranged that the broken ends of wire may be drawn together and the wire on the fence tightened.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combination tool of this kind which will speed up the repair of installation of wire fences or the like.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation of a combination tool constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the tool.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the tool showing the manner in which a pair of broken ends are drawn together and the wire tightened.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals Ill and H designate generally a pair of elongated handles which are pivotally connected together at their forward ends by means of a pivot I 2. The handle to at the rear thereof is formed with an opening I3 and the handle H is also formed with an opening M at the rear thereof. The openings i3 and i i are adapted to be disposed in registry when the handles I0 and l I are in closed position, and a pin or like element is adapted to be inserted through the registering openings l3 and M so as to hold the handles l0 and H against rocking movement relative to each other.
The pivot 42 at one end thereof extends laterally of the forward end of the handle H and is provided with a grooved wire tightening member l5. The handle member H has extending from the forward end thereof a jaw 56 which is formed on the lower side thereof with a cam surface H. The handle member H! has extending from the forward end thereof a jaw 18 which confronts the jaw l6 and a hammer head l9 projects from the jaw 18 and is provided at the rear thereof with a hook 20 by means of which staples or the like may be removed.
view taken on the line The jaw member [5 is provided with a wire cutting blade 2!, and the jaw member i8 is provided with a complementary wire cutting blade 22. The jaw member it is formed with a wire gripping or clamping jaw 23 confronting a wire gripping or clamping jaw '26 which is carried by the jaw member it so that when a wire is cut by engagement between the blades 2! and 22, the wire disposed between the jaws 23 and 24 may be tightly gripped. The jaw member I 8 is formed with a toothed or serrated inner side 25 confronting a smooth jaw surface 26 carried by the inner side of the jaw member Hi.
In order to provide a means whereby a wire such as a fence wire may be tightened, the jaw member is is provided on the inner side thereof forwardly of the serrations 25 with a transversely disposed notch 27, and the jaw member I8 is also provided on the outer side thereof slightly rearwardly of the notch 2'! with a second notch 28. A third notch 21a is also provided on the inner side of jaw i8 parallel to notch 21 and spaced rearwardly of notch 28. Notch 28 is thus offset from notches 2? and 27a in a direction parallel to a line joining notches 21 and 21a. A U-shaped wire tightening or winding member 29 which is commonly termed a staple is adapted to be engaged within the notches 27 and 28 as shown in Figure 3 with the free or open ends of the staple or tightening member 29 extending laterally from one side of the jaws I 55 and Iii.
In the tightening of a broken wire one end 30 of the wire is extended from one direction under and over the two sides of the staple 29, and the other end 3! is extended from the opposite direction over and under the sides of the staples 29. The jaw member H6 at the forward end thereof is provided with a pair of inwardly curved jaws 32 which form a longitudinally disposed channel or notch 33 within which the head of a nail is adapted to be engaged where the device is used in pulling a nail.
The forward end of the handle I! is provided with a shoulder 34 which constitutes a stop means for limitingthe rocking of the two handles rela tive to each other when these handles are rocked to a jaw opening position.
In the use of this device where it is desired to tighten a strand of wire the wire may be engaged with the grooved wire tightening pin or head 15 and the tool then rocked with the forward end thereof as a fulcrum. In the event it is desired to tighten the wire to a degree which cannot be tightened by the use of the grooved member #5 the wire may be threaded either in its broken or unbroken condition through the parallel sides of the staple 29 which at this time is engaged and clamped within the notches 21 and 28 of jaw member IS.
The tool is then rotated or swung to a circle with the staple 29 as a pivot so that the wire ends or the unbroken Wire will be wound upon the parallel sides of the staple or wire tightening member 29.
The tool hereinbefore described provides a combination tool which is capable of performing all of the operations required in the mounting of wire to form a fence, the repair of the Wire or the tightening of the wire.
What is claimed is:
A ranch pliers comprising a pair of pivotally connected together handles, a pair of opposed jaws having confrontin faces extending from said handles, one of said jaws having a pair of transverse notches arcuate in cross section, on the confronting face thereof and a third transverse notch, arcuate in cross section, on the opposite non-confronting face thereof, said third notch being oflset from each of the other two notches in a direction parallel to a line joining 4 said other two notches, whereby a U-shaped wire tightening staple may be disposed in and engaged by said third notch and one of said pair of notches to project laterally of said jaws, and a lip on the other of said jaws to clampingly hold said staple in one of said pair of notches between said confronting jaws, said other jaw having a smooth confronting face.
