H. 0. Goonmon. I'H IEJJAD CUTTER AND HOLDER FOR SEWING MAGHINE3. No. 268,012
PatentedNov. 28,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
HARRY C. GOODRICH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
THREAD CUTTER AND HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,012, dated November 28, 1882.
I I Application filed J 11110 19, 1882. (N model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY O. Goonnrorr,
residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have in vented a new and usefulImprovementin Thread Cutters and Holders for Sewin g-Machines, of which the following is afull description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective showing the lower ends of a needle and presser-foot bar with the thread-cutter attached to the presser-foot bar; Figs. 2 and 3, side elevations, showing opposite sides of the thread-cutter Fig. 4, a perspective view; Fig. 5, an enlarged top or plan view; Fig. 6, ,an enlarged side elevation, and Fig. 7 an enlarged side and edge view of the plate forming the combined cutter and spring.
The object of this inventionis to construct a combined thread cutter and holder for use on sewing-machines, by means of which the thread can be severed and the end caught and held, s0 as to prevent the unthreading of the needle after the thread has been severed; and its vnature consists in providing a frame or support made of a single piece of wire or other suitable material bent toform a shank for attachment to the presser-foot bar or otherwise,
" piece of thin steel or other suitable material cut or otherwise formed to have a portion, a, which forms the holder, a lip or prong, a, between the edge of which and the edge ofa the thread is severed, and a portion, a, by means of which the attachment is made to the frame or support. The portion a." is left straight, while the portion a is bent or curved, so that when the device is attached to the presser-foot bar this portion will stand away from such bar, and the lip or prong c has its extreme end bent in the reverse direction from a, so as to 'leave an opening at that point for the ready 5o admission of the thread.
B is the frame or support, made of a piece of wire or other suitable material which can be bentor otherwise formed so as to have a guard or outer portion, 1), which is of a bent or curved form, as shown, a body or inner portion, 11, between which and b is a space in which is secured the end or portion a of the plate A, and a shank or attaching portion, 1), by means of which the attachment is made to the presserfoot bar or other joint.
C is the presser-foot bar, D the presser-foot, E the needle-bar, F the needl, G the throatplate, and H the bed-plate, of the machine. These parts C, D, E, F, G, and H may be of any 6 of the usual and well-known forms of construction and arrangement, except that thepresserfoot bar, as shown, is provided with a transverse opening for the passage of the shank b in attaching the thread holder and cutter in position, a set-screw, a, being provided, passing through the presser-foot bar and engaging the shank to render the attachment secure.
The end a of the combined cutter'and holder A is inserted between the parts I2 b of the support B and secured in position. by brazing, soldering, or in some'other suitable manner, and when in place the portion it comes in contact or bears against the face of b, and is yielding to permit the thread to pass between (1 and b above the cutting-point, and at the same time has a spring-pressure which will clamp the thread with sufficient force to prevent the end from escaping after the cutter ha'sperformed its work.
The operation is as follows: After thesewing is completed the thread is loosened, as usual, and brought around and forced down between 11 and b until the edge of the cutter acts and severs it, allowing the work to be removed, and the end of the thread will be caught between a and b and held, preventing the unthreading of the needle on the return of the needle.
- I am aware that various forms of thread 5 holders and cutters have heretofore been con- 'structed for use on sewing-machines, and therefore I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming such a device, my invention consistthe lip or prong a, and frameor support 13, ingin the novel construction hereinbefore spehaving the portions 1) b and the shank b, sub- 10 cifically described, and which I will set forth stantially as and for the purposes specified.
in the claim. 5 What I claim as new, and desire to secure by HARRY GOODRIOH' Letters Patent, is Witnesses:
The thread holder and cutter consisting of B. A. PRICE,
the plateA, having the holding portion aand ALBERT H. ADAMS.
