8 Claims. (Cl. 46-153) 1 This invention relates to multifaced dolls and more particularly to apparatus and devices for selectively maintaining the position of doll heads in a fixed position.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved device or apparatus of this kind which provides a multifaced head rotatable about a horizontal axis and in which the head may be locked in a definite position.

Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved device of this kind in which the head is selectively automatically locked in position for each of the faces as the head is rotated.

Additional objects of the invention are to effect simplicity and efficiency in such methods and apparatus and to provide an extremely simple device or apparatus of this kind which is economical, durable, and reliable in operation, and economical to manufacture.

Still other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein details of the invention are described in the specification and some of the claims, the invention as described in the broader claims is not limited to these and many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed in the broader claims.

The inventive features for the accomplishment of these and other objects are shown herein in 7 connection with a multifaced doll which briefly stated, includes a doll body having a head mounting U member in the normal neck region thereof and a telescoping triangular rod bearingly mounted therein. A multifaced head is substantially fast thereon and detent means are provided to automatically lock the head in one of several face positions.

My doll comprises a body l0 except for neck and head; over which a pair of spaced metal straps are mounted fast in the neck region of the body and extending toward the back and chest of the body. A strong head-mounting U-member strip generally designated as 12 has'the yoke thereof mounted fast on said straps as by rivets I4, the yoke being near said neck region, and the arms [5 and I5 of said member projecting upwardly and substantially in the plane of the shoulders of the body. The end portions of the yoke arms are provided with horizontally axially alined bearing openings l6 and I8, the marginal portions around the openings being dished inwardly as at I9 and 20.

A telescoping rod 2| of equilateral triangular cross section has journals at each end thereof disposed in said openings. One journal may be in the form of a long stud 22 and the other a short headed screw 24. Said rod 2| comprises a shaft 25 of wood, plastic, metal or other similar material of triangular cross section and on which a capped metal triangular sleeve 26 is slidably received on the inner end portion of the shaft. A compressed spring 28 between the inner end of the shaft in the inner face of the cap of the sleeve normally assures the rod to be in extended form. The

22 and 24 project from the outer ends of the sleeve and shaft respectively, all in axial alinement. A detent stop 29 projects inwardly from the arm l5. near the sleeve and is adapted to engage the lateral faces of the sleeve substantially on the center lines in the sleeve faces. The stop is in the form of an inwardly turned tongue integral with the U member strip and partially cut from the marginal portion of the opening l5 therein.

A hollow substantially spherical head 30 having triangular openings 3| in the ear portions thereof is mounted on said rod non-rotative with respect thereto. The head is provided with three

32a, 32b, and 320 each covering horizontally a third of the spherical surface. When the journal 22 nearest the detent stop 29 is pressed inwardly to telescope the rod, the outer end of the sleeve will clear the stop so that the head and rod may be rotated to bring another head face into normal position. On release of the journal if one of the faces is in normal position the rod will become extended and the stop will engage the corresponding face of the sleeve and hold the head in a fixed position.

If one of the head faces is not in normal position the head will rotate in either direction for the end of the stop will bear against the smooth outer end of the sleeve, but when a thin portion of the rod comes in line with the stop the rod extends and is held against further turning.

The head 30 may be made in any manner vknown to the art. It may be advisable to make the ear portion adjacent the sleeve of more durable material as shown at 34. If that portion is made separate the opening into which it is fitted will enable the fitting of eyes from within the head. The portion 34 may be glued or cemented to the remainder of the head.

The invention claimed is:
