Description

' Nov. 17, 1953 A. TRZNADEL BODY SUPPORTING GARMENT Filed Oct. 30,
INVENTOR. [ii/magi 7a,;
Patented Nov. 17, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BODY SUPPORTING GARMENT j Amelia Trznadel, Holyoke, Mass.
Application October 30, 1952, Serial No. 317,673
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in body supporting garments and is directed more particularly to garments for women commonly called foundation garments, corsets and the like.
The principal objects of the garment of the application are directed to the provision of a tubular stretchable body surrounding member which is provided with means intermediate upper and lower ends thereof for supporting the lower abdominal region and preventing upward shifting of the garment in different postures of the wearer in combination with means to facilitate expansion of the lower thigh embracing skirt portion of the garment without unfavorably affecting the embracing and supporting function of the garment.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangements of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of a garment embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view centrally of the garment shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The garment of the invention includes an elongated tubular body 2 which is formed from elastic material such as fabric incorporating resilient or elastic elements such as rubber threads. The fabric is made so as to be stretchable transversely and longitudinally.
Preferably the fabric will be formed to the shape of an elongated body so as to fit around the abdomen and thighs of the wearer. The body will have such a size as to snugly embrace the wearer for the supporting function and being formed in the shape of a tube there will be no longitudinal seaming.
To the front portion 4 of the garment and on the izmer side thereof a supporting panel 6 is se- 2 cured. "Said panel is disposed-intermediate upper and lower edges of the body 2 and has opposite longitudinal side edges secured to the front portion 4 by stitching indicated by 8.
The upper end In of the panel is not secured to the body and a lower portion [2 of said panel is doubled upwardly between the main body of the panel and front portion 4 of the garment. The lower double end H or edge of'the panel is not secured to the front portion 4. s
The panel 6 will be formed from elastic fabric material adapted to stretch in opposite directions and it will be secured to the front panel along its opposite vertical side edges in such a way that the front portion 4 of the garment has a transverse fullness between the lines of stitching 8, over the panel 4 as indicated by IS in Fig. 3. That is, the transverse width of the front portion between the stitching 8 will be greater than the width of the panel so that the front portion 4 will have slack or fullness.
With the garment in place around the body, the panel 6 will overlie the abdomen of the wearer with the lower double thickness portion thereof overlying the lower abdominal region. This panel not only efficiently embraces the lower abdomen and prevents bulging but also prevents upward movement of the garment on the body particularly in sitting position of the wearer. The garment is, of course, stretched so as to snugly embrace the body as is the panel so that it provides a firm support and not only obviates bulging of the abdomen and upward movement of the garment but it acts with a lifting effect to the lower abdominal region.
The lower or skirt portion l8 of the garment is provided with an upwardly extending slot 20 disposed centrally of the front portions 4 of the garment providing unconnected side portions 22 at the sides thereof.
The slit 20 is distinguished from an inverted V in that normally in an erect position of the wearer the slit is substantially closed. In a sitting posture the slit allows for expansion or stretching of the skirt of the garment so that spreading of the upper limbs is accomplished without discomfort or a tendency of the garment to creep upwardly on the wearer.
As a further feature of the invention, downwardly extending stays 26 are provided along the upper edge of the garment. Preferably these include strips 24 of foam rubber or the like secured between fabric members 28 and the garment by stitching 30.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the contributes in preventing upward movement of the garment.
As many loops such as 32 of fabric may be secured along the lower skirt porti'dfi 8f me gar: ment as may be desired for hose fasteners or garters indicated by 34.
The invention may be embb'died in other spb:
cific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present as: bodiments are therefore to be considered in all resiafits as biii'g illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope ortne invention being indicated byth'e appended claim rather than by the foregoing des'ii-ptio'ri and all modifications ass variations as fall within the meaning and surges and raiige br equivale tly or the ap sensed claim are therefore intended to be 'm- Brabed therein, H I What it desire-a ts claim afisseeure by Let ters Patent of the United States is: I
