PATENT OEEICE.
INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,717, dated October 10, 1882,
Applicationfiled May 12, 1832.
.To atl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. TEBBET'rs, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Indexes, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part ot' this specification, in which the improved index is shown in perspective, the index being opened.
The present invention is an improvement in that class ot' indexes wherein names and reference-numbers appear in combination-a let- Ier-book index, for example.
The prominent feature of the improvement is arranging the numbers at the lett of or underneath the names, rather than at the right ot' and in line with the names, as heretofore has been customary-that is, the pages of the index are ruled to form vertical columns to receive the reference-numbers and to form spaces to receive the names, the latter being at the right ot or above the line dividing the names and numbers, and the numbers being entered in vertical columns respectively beneath the names to which they belong, as understood' more readily by referring to the drawing, where- K represents an index having the improvement, and, saving which, being ot' the usual construction.
L M represent pages of the index, the pagel L being intended tor names beginning, say, with the letter C and the page M with names beginning with the letter D. 'Ihe pages are each ruled to form vertical columns N N N and the horizontal spaces O C C, and are also divided into spaces I) and Q, the space P being for the names and the space Qfor the numbers. The division between the spaces P Q may be suitably indicated, and preferably by means of a series ot' the initial letters of the names-that is, upon the page L a series of the letter C appears and upon the page M a series of the letter D, and so on. The series is arranged diagonally upon the page, so far as is practicablethat is, from the upper lefthand corner of the page diagonally across the (No model.)
page to the point R, at which point the space between the initials and the righthand side of the page becomes too short to be narrowed any more. Accordingly, to utilize the space S of the page the series from the point R extends vertically downward, and in this lastnamed space the names and numbers are entered in the usual manner, the numbers being L at the right of the names. 'I is similarly utilized.
To illustrate the working of the improvement various names are entered in the index, as in practice-tor.instance, the names Chase dt Co., Cabot dt Bro, Clay da Son, on the page L, and the names Deere 85 Co.,77 Day Bros, Davis da Co.,77 on the page M. The reference-numbers 5, ll, 36, for Chase 85 0o., are entered in the column under the initial ot' Chase vl 00., the reference-numbers 9,413,115, for Cabot dt Bio, under the initial ot' Cabot & Bro, and so on. The ret'- erence-numbers 325, 340, 436, for Deere & Co.,77 are similarly entered in the column under the initial ot' Deere d? (10., the numbers 361, 367, 600,v for Day Bros, under the initial of Day Bros, and soon. -ln the space S the numbers for Clark St Co.7 are entered at the right of the name, and in the space 'I the numbers for Cass & Co.77 are entered at the right of the name.
The chief advantage ot' the improvement grows out of the fact that in referring to the index it is easierto go through the referencenumbers when arranged vertically in columns than when arranged horizontally at the level ot' the names.
l claim- An index the pages ot' which have the initials of' the names pi intcd diagonally upon the pages, and being ruled to form vertical spaces to enable the reference-num ber to be entered in columns respectively beneath said initials.
The corner-space LEWIS B. TEBBETTS.
