This invention relates to door locks, more particularly of the cylinder lock type.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide a cylinder type doorA lock of simple, inexpensive and rugged construction utilizing but few parts none of which are delicate or likely to become out of order and which may readily be assembled to a door with but the exercise of ordinary skill, and which in addition to the advantages of the conventional cylinder lock, incorporates a turn bolt foi` locking or unlocking a spring biased bolt type-latch from the inside independently of the key operation from the outside.
Another object is to provide a door latch of the type which utilizes the compact cylinder of a conventional cylinder lock as the agency for locking or unlocking from one side of the door a conventional spring 'biased bolt type latch normally opened by the knob shaft without in any way interfering with the locking or unlocking of the latch from the other side of the door by a turn bolt.
Another object is to provide a door lock of the above type which though it dispenses with the need for a dead bolt, rprovides the same security against jimmying open `the door as such dead bolt provides.
Another object is to provide a door lock of the above type which incorporates a compact ilat transmission unit of the type shown in Patent No. 2,303,790 which is easily axed to the door for establishing a driving connection between a cylinder lock and a spring biased bolt type latch.

Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, a cylinder lock II, the vdetails of which need :not
be shown or described as they are conventional, extends through a corresponding hole I2 in the door I3, with the rim I4 of the lock resting against a corresponding depressed flange I5 of a collar I 6 about said lock II.
Although the cylinder lock II may be secured in place in any suitable manner, preferably a substantially cup-shaped disc I'I whose outturned rim I8 overlaps the inner face of the door is positioned in hole I 2 and serves as the anchor for the cylinder II and the collar IS. A plurality of screws 2I extend through the disc Il and are threaded into lugs 22 of the cylinder lock casing, drawing the latter tight against the door and collar I 3 thereby securely retaining the cylinder lock II and collar I6 in place.
Conventional door knobs 25 are mounted respectively on the extremities of a shaft 25 which is desirably substantially square in cross section and extends through the rotatable hub 2'I of a spring biased bolt type latch 28 which is positioned in a horizontal bore` 29 in the door. Shaft 25 serves to operate the spring biased bolt 3i?, the head 3l of which protrudes through the usual aperture 33 in the face plate 32 which trims the side edge 33 of the door and is secured thereto by screws 34.
Although the latch 28 may be of any suitable conventional type, in the embodiment herein shown to illustrate the invention, as shown in Fig. 6, it desirably comprises a pair of complemen-tary plates 36 and 3l having inwardly turned flanges 38 at the upper and lower edges thereof near the front end of the plates 36, 37 and also having inwardly turned flanges 39 at the rear edges thereof.
Thus, when the plates 33, 3'! are joined together by meansof a screw 4I extending through a hole in one of said plates, illustratively plate 31, and threaded into a boss 42 desirably cast integral with the other plate 36, the plates will be securely retained together with the adjacent edges of said flanges in abutment. A casing will be formed in which the mechanism of the latch is mounted, the face plate 32 being secured to the front of said casing by means of a tongue 43 stuck out from the face plate and defining the aperture 33 therein, and clamped against plate 36 as by a rivet 44.
As shown in Fig. 5, the latch bolt 33 desirably comprises a stem 45 having the head 3| desirably formed integral with one end thereof. Stem 45 desirably has an elongated slot 4G therein to accommodate a tensed coil spring Il? compressed between the head 3| and the boss 42,
normally to urge the latch bolt to its outermost position.
The rear end of the stem 45 has a yoke con formation desirably formed integral therewith, the legs 48 of which straddle the hub 2l which is journalled in suitable bearing opening l in plates 3G and 31. The installation of the lock is effected with ease. The door is equipped with the opening I l0 for the door knob shaft 25, with the opening I2 for the cylinder lock II and with the mortise 29 for the latch 28.
The cylinder lock I I is positioned in opening I2 with its collar I6 therearound and the disc I1 is set in place and screws 2| tightened. The latch 28 is thereupon installed in the mortise 29.
The escutcheon plate 51 is positioned over the transmission plate 62 with hub 12 in registry with opening II9 in plate 51. The shank 13 of the turnbolt 14 is positioned in the bore of said hub 12 and spread at its inner end as at |20 securely to retain the turnbolt in place. The cylinder lock key openingr is turned to vertical position so that the width of the operating bar 63 extends horizontally. The transmission plate 52 and escutcheon plate 51 are screwed to the door in proper relation, with the operating bar 66' entering the slot 60 in hub 69 which is kept horizontal by hairpin spring |06.
The shaft 25 is thereupon passed through the escutcheon plate and the hub 21 of latch 28 and knobs 26 are afxed to the end ofthe shaft to complete the assembly.
rlhe operation will now be briefly summarized.
When the door is to be locked from the outside, the parts are in the position shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 6. The operating bar 66 is turned by the key il', which is inserted into the cylinder lock with its teeth upwardly, and` rotates the hub E9 and the gear segment 1I in a counterclockwise direction as shown. in Fig. 2. The gear segment 1I enters into mesh with gear segment 15 and turns the latter in a clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 2 and as gear segment 15 rotates, the stud 33 thereon will abut against shoulder 95 and move the locking plate 8| downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. This will cause the flanges 80 of the slot 8S to straddle shaft 25 to prevent turning thereof and at the same time will move the stop arm H3 into its seat in the notches H5 in plates 35 and 31 of the latch.
In this position, even if a screwdriver or flat member should be inserted between the door jamb and the head 3| of the latch bolt, the latter cannot be moved inwardly as the stop arm I I3, which is to the rear of inwardly turned ngers 52, 53, will block movement of the latch bolt, the latter thereby functioning as a dead bolt.

By reason of the construction above described',-
the latch serves the dual function of a latch bolt'- and also functions as a dead bolt and cannot be jimmied open by reason of the fact that the stop l arm locks the latch bolt'in its outermost position.
The compact structure utilized herein permits installation of the lock on even a relatively thin door, as the latch is mortised in the side edge thereof and as the transmission unit which connects the cylinder lock to the latch, is relatively flat and is positioned on the inner face of the l door.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
