The present invention relates to improvements in ventilators and relates more particularly, to a ventilator sash unit for use in a moving vehicle.
An object of the present invention is to provide a ventilator sash unit which may be installed in a space of limited thickness as a replacement for the windows or panels in the sides and doors of a subway car or other moving vehicle and the installation of which will require little, if any, alteration of the vehicle. Another object of the invention is to provide a ventilator sash unit which will assure positive and more adequate ventilation in such vehicles than has heretofore been possible. A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilator sash unit for a vehicle which, when closed, will be Weathertight under pressures that may be exerted against the ventilator tending to force water through it such as when the vehicle is moving or when the moving vehicle enters a confined space such as a tunnel or subway.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, there is a metal frame Il! having an opening in which a ventilator, indicated generally at II, may be mounted. The metal frame I may be in the form or a panel of appropriate size and shape to replace the windows or other removable sections in the side walls or doors of a moving vehicle such as a subway car. As shown best in Fig, l, the metal frame I may also be provided with another opening in which a pane of glass l2 or another ventilator unit may be mounted, if desired. However, if desired, the ventilator unit may be mounted in place of a window directly in the Window sash and may occupy the entire window 0r a portion thereof.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the construction of the edge of the metal frame I0 surrounding the opening in which the ventilator II is mounted is generally similar to a window sash in which a pane of glass is demountably supported. The edge of the opening in the 4frame is channeled and a 8 Claims. (Cl. 98-13) ange I3 extends around the opening on the inner side thereof. An abutment I4 extends inwardly of the frame at the base of the flange I3 and also extends around the opening in the frame I0.
Fitted within the opening defined in the frame I0, there are three foraminous or slotted ventilator plates I5, I5, and Il. The ventilator plates are supported on one side by the flange I3 with their edges adjoining the abutment I4. A louver plate I8 having a series 0f vertically extending louvers I9 formed on the outer side thereof is superimposed on the ventilator plate 'I that is on the outside of the vehicle. A molding strip 20 extends around the opening in the frame I0 on the side opposite to the flange I3. The molding strip 25 has a portion engaging with the channeled edge of the frame and a portion engaging with the outer surface of the louver plate I8. The molding strip 20, thus, secures the ventilator plates in place in the opening in the frame Il] and it may be designed to exert any desired pressure against the ventilator plates. The molding strip 2l! is made of a compressible material such as rubber and may be of the same general form as the strip shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,891,932, issued December 27, 1932, to Lytle G. Hunter for Mounting for a Panel.
The ventilator plates I5, I5, and il each have a series of narrow, elongated vertical openings or slots 2|, 22, and 23, respectively, therein. The two ventilator plates I5 and Il on the inside and outside of the ventilator are held in fixed or stationary positions in the frame I@ and the slotted openings ZI and 25 in these plates, respectively, are in register or alignment. rlhe center ventilator plate I5 is movable relative to the two stationary ventilator plates. The slotted openings Z2 in the center ventilator plate IS may be of the same size and shape as the openings in the fixed plates and are spaced so that they will register with the openings in the stationary ventilator plates in one position of the movable plate I6. However, the center ventilator plate I5 is slidable lengthwise of the stationary ventilator plates I5 and I'I by a distance sufficient to move the openings 22 therein out of register with and completely block the aligned openings 2I and 23 in the xed ventilator plates I5 and I'I.
For the purpose of opening and closing the ventilator or adjusting it as desired, a control knob 24 is secured to the plate I6 and extends through a horizontal slot 25 in the stationary ventilator plate I5 on the inside of the vehicle where it is accessible from within the vehicle for adjusting 3 the ventilator as desired. 'I'he vertical louvers I9 on the louver plate I8 may be of any desired length and are arranged so that they extend over one or more of the slots in the ventilator plates. Each of the louvers I9 has an opening 26 along one of the vertical sides thereof and a slotted opening 26a may also be provided at the lower horizontal edge of each of the louvers through' I5 and I'I at the top and bottom edges'of the movable center ventilator'plate I6. The spacer plates 28 serve as guides on Whichthecenter ventilator plate slides and one edge of the center ventilator plate rests Yonrlower spacer plate. By
varying the thickness of the spacer plates a suitable pressure will be exerted against the movable ventilator plate that will permit the movable plate I6 to slide easily, but which will hold it against unintentional movement. The spacer plates 28 may be secured to one of the stationary ventilator plates for convenience of assembly.
In order to insure that there will be a weatherproof seal at the slotted openings in the ventilator plates, a coating 29 of a flocked material is applied to the surfaces of the stationary ventilator plates contacting with the movable ventilator plate and also to the edges of the spacer plates. As shown best in Fig. 4, the .docked coating 29 is applied to the inner-'surface of the stationary ventilator plate I'I'contacting with the center plate I6 and the spacer plates 28.Vv` The coating 29 is also applied to surfaces of the ventilator plate I5 and the edges of the spacer platesV 28 contacting with the center ventilator plate I6. The coating 29 is preferably made of a flocked material containing very short lengths of rayon thread that may be applied to the surfaces of the plates by spraying. Such a coating forms an effective watertight' seal between the ventilator plates and around the slotted openings therein when the ventilator is closed or open, and it also permits the center ventilator plate I6 to move smoothly while providing sufficient friction to hold the center ventilatorY plate I6 ata position where it is set.
When the ventilator is closed, a double labyrinth passage is provided that is fully sealed and through which it is practically impossible for water to pass even under pressure. This provides a weatherproof ventilator that is especially suitable for use in a moving vehicle Where pressures tending to force water resulting from rain or snow are exerted against the ventilator when the vehicle is moving. f
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the louvers I9 are stamped out as an integral part of the louver plate I8, but it will be understood that they may be formed individually and attached tothe outside of the stationary ventilator plate II in a suitable manner such as by spot welding. In such an arrangement the rubber molding strip will be indirect engagement with the stationary ventilator plate I1.
It is contemplated that a number of ventilators will be installed in a vehicle with the vertical openings 26 in the louvers I9 on some of the ventilators facing toward one end of the vehicle while on others they will face toward the other end of the vehicle. With such an arrangement the louvers facing the forwrd end of the vehicle will cause air to be forced into the vehicle while those facing the rear of the vehicle will function as ejectors to draw out the stale air from within the vehicle and thus, provide for positive ventilation and a continuous circulation of the air in the vehicle. Such an arrangement also permits the ventilators to function regardless of which end of the vehicle is the forward end at any particular time.
The center or movable ventilator plate IB is preferably made vof stainless steel so that it will 'not rust or corrode and is preferably made relatively thin. By making the movable ventilator plate thin, it will conform readily to any irregularities present in the stationary ventilator plates and the edges of the slots therein will form cutting edges that will. slice through ice or other obstacles which might enter the slots of the ventilator and otherwise prevent movement of the center plate. The stationary ventilator plates are preferably of sufficient thickness, as compared to the width of slots therein, to prevent persons from putting their ngers in the slots to such a depth that they can interfere with or be injured by the movement of the center plate. In the drawings, the! frame I 0, the stationary ventilator plates I5 and E1, the louver plate I8 and the spacer plates 28 have been cross-hatched to indicate aluminum, but any suitable material may be used for these elements.
It will also be understood that various changes and modications may be made in the embodiment of the invention illustrated and described herein without ldeparting from the scope of the invention as dened 'by the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a Ventilator sash unit for a moving vehicle, the combination of a frame extending in a vertical plane and having an opening therein, a pair of spaced ventilator plates fitted within said opening, each of said ventilator plates being stationary and having openings therein aligned with corresponding openings in the other of said plates, spacers separating said ventilator plates at the top and bottom edges thereof, a center ventilator plate slidably mounted between the stationary ventilator' plates and supported on the bottom spacer, said center plate having openings therein and being slidable between a position where said openings coincide with the openings ofthe `stationary ventilator plates and a position where the openings in the stationary ventilator plates are completely blocked by said center plate, a louver plate superimposed on the outer side of one of the stationary ventilator plates,v said louver plate having a series of spaced vertically extending louvers on the outer side thereof, each of said louvers extending over at least one of the openings in the stationary ventilator plates and having an opening along one of the' vertical sides thereof, and a strip of compressible material securing said ventilator plates inthe frame, said strip having a portion engaging with the frame and a portion exerting pressure against the outer surface of one of the ventilator plates and urging it toward the other plate under pressure.
2. In a ventilator sash unit for a moving vehicle, the combination of a frame having an opening'therein, a pair of ventilator plates supported in fixed positions in said opening, each of said ventilator plates having openings therein aligned with corresponding openings in the other of said plates, spacing means interposed between said plates at the top and bottom edges thereof for maintaining said plates in spaced relation to each other, a center ventilator plate slidably mounted between said pair of ventilator plates, said center plate having openings therein and being slidable between a position where said openings coincide with the openings of the fixed ventilator plates and a position where the openings in said fixed ventilator plates are completely blocked by said center plate, an operating member carried by the center ventilating plate and extending through a slotted opening in the inner of said fixed ventilator plates, a coating of a flocked material applied to the inner surfaces of the xed ventilator plates and contacting with the opposing surfaces of the center ventilator plate and a louver plate located on the outside of the outer of said xed plates, said last-mentioned plate having a series of spaced vertically extending louvers on the outer side thereof, each of said louvers extending over at least one of the openings in the fixed ventilator plates and having an opening along one of the vertical sides thereof.
3. In a ventilator sash unit for a moving vehicle the combination as deined in claim 2 which includes a strip of compressible material extending around the opening in the frame and removably holding the Ventilating unit in place in the frame, said strip having a portion engaging with the frame and a portion exerting inward pressure against said xed ventilator plates.

In a ventilator unit adapted for mounting in an opening having a channeled edge in the side of a moving vehicle, the combination of a pair of stationary ventilator plates extending across an opening in a vehicle, one of said plates being located on the inside of the vehicle and the other of said plates being located on the outside of the vehicle, each of said plates having a series of spaced openings therein registering with corresponding openings in the other of said plates, spacing means interposed between said plates, a center ventilator plate slidably mounted between said stationary ventilator plates, said center plate having a series of spaced openings therein and being slidable between a position where said openings coincide with the openings in the stationary ventilator plates and a position where the openings in the stationary ventilator plates are completely blocked by said center plate, an operating member carried by the center plate and extending through a slotted opening in the inner stationary plate, a series of spaced vertical louvers located on the outside of the outer stationary plate, each of said louvers extending over at least one of the openings in the outer stationary plate and having an opening along one of the vertical sides thereof and compressible strip means for securing the unit in the opening in the vehicle, said means having a portion urging the outer stationary plate inwardly under pressure and a portion engaging with a channeled edge of the opening in the vehicle.
5. In a ventilator unit, the combination as defined in claim 4 which includes a coating of flocked material applied to at least one of the opposing surfaces of the stationary ventilator plates and the center plate, said coating being in contact under pressure with the other of said opposing surfaces.
6. In a ventilator sash unit, the combination as dened in claim 4 wherein the spacing means comprises members extending lengthwise of the stationary plates at the top and bottom edges thereof on the center plate is slidably guided in movement between the stationary plates.
7. In a ventilator sash unit for a moving vehicle, the combination of a frame having a channeled edge defining an opening therein and a flange extending around said opening, a pair of stationary ventilator plates extending across said opening with one of said plates bearing against said flange, each of said plates having openings therein aligned with corresponding openings in the other of said plates, spacing means interposed between said plates at the edges thereof, a center plate slidably mounted between said pair of ventilator plates, said center plate having openings therein corresponding to the openings in the pair of ventilator plates and being movable between a position where the openings therein coincide with the openings of the stationary plates and a position where the openings in the stationary plates are completely blocked by solid portions of said center plate, an operating member carried by the center plate and extending through a slotted opening in the stationary plate located on the inside of the vehicle, a plate having a series of spaced louvers therein located on the outer side of the stationary plate on the outside of the vehicle, each of said louvers extending over at least one of the openings in the stationary plate and having an opening along one of the vertical sides thereof and compressible strip means removably securing the ventilator unit in the frame, said strip means having a portion fitted within the channeled edge of the frame and a portion resiliently engaging with the outside of the louver plate, said last-mentioned portion urging the louver plate and the Ventilator plates together and against the flange under pressure.
8. In a ventilator sash unit for a moving vehicle, the combination as defined in claim 7 which includes a coating of a flocked material applied to at least one of the opposing surfaces of the stationary ventilator plates and the center ventilator plate, said coating contacting with the other of said opposing surfaces and forming a weathertight seal between the ventilator plates and the center plate.
