Description
April 14, 1953 s. .1. HEIMAN CABINET-ENCLOSED WINDOW- vmxmwmc FAN Filed Feb. 10, 1950' M 1 W Eur //\/VEN7'OB SIDNEY J. HEIMAN Patented Apr. 14, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CABINET-ENCLOSED WINDOW VENTI- LATING FAN The invention relates generally to fans, but more particularly to such a fan that is mounted within a cabinet for placement in the window of a room, for the purpose of cooling and ventilating the latter.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to so construct a fan of the kind described that it will operate with a minimum of noise and vibration, and therefore enhance the desirability of use of the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fan of the kind described that will be simple to make and at low cost.
Yet another object of the invention is to so construct such a device, that there will be a U-shaped member or yoke to support the fan, and wherein a plurality of coil springs will suspend said yoke together with said fan load from overhead, so that the entire load will be yieldably and resiliently thus suspended.
The invention has among its other objects, the production of a device of the kind described, that will be relatively simple, compact and economical in construction and operation, shall be adjustable so that the fan may be supported truly horizontal, have comparatively few operating parts, long-wearing, and which will be otherwise satisfactory and efficient for use wherever deemed applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described, will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, as will be apparent from the disclosures herein given.
To this end, my invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and the uses mentioned, as will be more clearly pointed out in the following specification.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters represent like or corresponding parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, as viewed from inside the room in which it is positioned, and with a portion of the screen structure omitted; and
Figure 2 is a perspective detail of portions of the same, in spread apart relation, showing the manner of suspending the moving parts.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is shown a fan structure that is intended to be placed in a window opening of a room that is to be ventilated and cooled, there being a casing, housing or cabinet A to protect the mechanism and to prevent the possibility of accidental injury to persons coming into contact with the fan.
To this end, I have provided the casing or cabinet A of any suitable or preferred material, such as of sheet metal, having a front panel I provided with an enlarged opening 2 therethrough adapted to be in registry with the fan sweep area and through which the air from the room is adapted to be discharged by said fan.
The casing is also provided with the spaced apart side walls 3-3, the top wall 4, rear wall 5 and bottom wall 6, so that said casing is approximately of rectangular shape in horizontal cross-section.
Flanges I extend along each of the side walls 33 from front to rear of the casing, and placed well above the mid-height of the casing, for a purpose to be more clearly hereinafter set forth, these flanges being sufiiciently sturdy to support the weight of the motor-driven fan unit safely.
When having moving parts within a fairly large sheet metal structure, the noises of vibration and the like are magnified or intensified; hence any reduction in the number and intensities of such noises are well received by the prospective users of such fans.
Therefore, I have found that by mounting the fan and motor unit from above, so that the weight of the same is freely supported and suspended, minimizes such noise-deterrent factor, and improves the installation.
A U-shaped support, having a pair of spacedapart side arms or legs 8-8 and a web or crosspiece 9 interconnecting said arms at one end, is made of relatively strong and rigid material, such as of steel bar bent to the desired shape, and to accommodate itself to the approximately rectangular size and shape of the casing, somewhat as shown, is used as a mount for the combined fan and motor unit B. For example, a connecting piece 10 may be interposed between said U-shaped support and motor portion of the fan unit, and riveted or otherwise fixedly secured to the said members, as seen most clearly in Fig. 2. When so connected, the arms 88 are arranged respectively at the sides of said fan unit.
A pair of suspension elements, such as the coil springs HH are arranged to carry the moving load from the casing, as by mounting to the flanges 1'i. The pair of springs at each side of the casing are spaced apart so that one is adjacent the front of the casing and the other is adjacent the rear of the same, so as to give proper balance to the load, and the lower ends of said springs are removably threaded through the apertures l2 provided in the arms 8-8, while the upper ends of said springs are similarly connected to the flanges 11 at the apertures l3.
It is desirable that adjustment be provided in the event that the springs are not perfectly alike in length or strength, and for this purpose, a threaded element 14 may be interposed between the upperends of said springs and the apertures 13, with adjusting nuts l5. Hence, the springs may be adjusted as desired and needed, so that a the fan will be perfectly balanced and with its rotational axis truly horizontal andiin registry with the center of the opening 2 in the front panel of the casing or cabinet.
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that with the parts so installedandadjusted, the. fan and motor unit Will be resiliently or yieldably,
suspended from above, by said coil springs, and this will be the only connection between the said unit and the cabinet; hence noises will be reduced to a minimum...
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modificatiens may bemade in'the samewithout departin from the spirit of my invention; henceI donot wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, arrangement, construction and combination of parts herein shownanddescribed, or the uses mentioned, except as limited by the state of the art to which this invention appertains, and the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by of each of said side arms andmminectedsatrtheirde 4 zontal axis, of a casing for enclosing said fan unit and upon which said fan unit is mounted and being approximately rectangular in horizontal cross-section, a U -shaped member having 5 a pair of side arms and a cross-piece interconnecting said arms at one end, flanges secured along the pair of opposed sides of said casing, and a pair of spaced-apart coil springs adjustably connected at their upper endsto ,each of said flanges and at their lower ends to each of said arms to together resiliently support the entire load of said fan and U-shaped member from said casing.
3.'The combination with afan, of a casing having a side wall to either side of said fan and partially enclosing the latter, a U-shaped memher for mounting said fan thereon, the pair of side arms, voiY-said member extending substantially parallei to said casing side walls, and a pair of spaced-apart suspension springs connected between each of said casing side Walls and each armof said U. sharpedharembetufioinyiebrii ably supporting the 'entirei ioadinsaiii d 4.
