My invention pertains to furniture "and more specifically to an article of furniture, designed andconstructed to achieve the dual function of "a folding display booth and a transporting chest.
My invention is planned for use by a commercial exhibitor at an industrial convention or the like as the solution for a low cost, limited space, and secondary display of merchandise. The'foldingdisplay booth requires neitherskilled labor, special tools, nor excess time to assemble. During the exhibition there is no problem of shipping container, storage or disposal. Again, after use of the booth is terminated the job of repacking is achieved simply and quickly, with -a minimum of effort.
The device of my invention provides a center section comprising an illuminated canopy and display and storage pedestal maintained in a spaced relation by an intervening rear wall, two

each with an additional hinged outer wing extension, and two oblique braces or headers hinged and pivoting conveniently at the hinged side wings and locked into an adjacent side wall of the illuminated canopy of the center section.
Nowit is an object of my invention to assemble the above mentioned elements of uniform height and width in a folding structure which is intended to be arranged in an upright position when used as a display booth and which is capable of folding in such a way, due to its novel construction, as to form "a transporting chest.

In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawings, and orienting the several parts in their relationships as shown assembled for display use in Fig. 1, the device may be considered as constructed about a center section i. This center section is shown as consistin of a box-shaped illuminated canopy 2 and a box-shaped storage and display pedestal 3, said canopy 2 and pedestal 3, having the same length and width and being connected together and held in a spaced relation at their respective rear portions by a center section display wall 4. The bottom or under wall of canopy 2 is conveniently connected to and supported in parallel relation to the top 6 of pedestal 3 by oblique sup porting rods 1 conveniently cylindrical in shape and located at the forward ends of canopy and pedestal.
Said illuminated canopy 2 is a hollow closed six sided box having rectangular shaped sides adjacent ones whereof are in perpendicularity. The front wall 8 of said canopy may be suitably hinged at the top to the front end of the canopy top wall 5. Said front wall 8 of canopy 2 contains a translucent section In of glass or plastic or other material and of desired shape and decoration for advertising and illuminating purposes. Said top wall 9 of canopy 2 extends beyond the side walls and front and rear walls of said canopy 2, a distance equal to the thickness of wing I6 and wing extension ll hereinafter described. Illumination for a display on the pedestal top may be supplied from the canopy in suitable manner such as by an appropriate spotlight 12 supported at the underside of under wall 5 of the canopy, capable of directional adjustment for illuminating either or both the center section display wall 4 and top wall 6 of pedestal 3.
Said pedestal 3 is also a box-like structure which may be closed and hollow and having parallel rectangular shaped side walls perpendicular to top 6 and rear wall 4. The front sidewall l3 of said pedestal 3 has vertical grooves M of right angle predetermined cross section cut in the corners. Said grooves 14 are used in folding the display booth for transporting. Bottom side wall 55 of pedestal 3 is rectangular in shape and projects beyond the side walls and front and rear wall of' said pedestal 2, a distance equal to the thickness of center section display wall 4.
Center section display wall 4, having the same width as canopy 2 and pedestal 3 and a height extending from the underside of top wall 9 of canopy 2 to the top side of bottom wall it of pedestal 3, contacts and supports both canopy 2 and pedestal 3 along the entire area of their respective rear walls. Said center section dis play wall l is suitably hinged along each vertical side to a side wing it thereat. Each said side win is is rectangular in cross section, and has a height and thickness the same as display wall 5 and a widthequal to the length of canopy 2 and pedestal 3. In open condition of the display as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said side wings i5 extend laterally in the same vertical plane as said display wall 4, and are in turn each conveniently hinged along their outer vertical sides to outer wing extensions ll. Said outer wing extensions ll, stretching out in use in the same plane as sidewings I6 and display wall 5, are rectangular in cross section and have a height and thickness the same as side wings i6 and width equal to onehalf the width of canopy 2 and pedestal 3.
The side walls of canopy 2 and pedestal 3 are suitably plywood. Center display walls side wings i6 and outer wing extensions i? are also conveniently plywood, reinforced with suitable wood members, such as a peripheral frame cross braced with appropriate, perpendicular and in-- tersecting wood slats dividin the exteriorface of said display wall 4, side wings i6 and outer wing extensions I! into rectangular sub areas.-
With the booth set up for use, there are provided two horizontally disposed oblique braces 58,- having the same height as side wall I3 of canopy 2, in assembled position therewith. One end of each said brace is afiixed by a pivoting hinge to the upper, outer corner of side wings i6 and'the other end is secured by a novel locking device to the forward end of side wall I79 of canopy 2. Said braces [22 are basically hollow six sided boxes having rectangular plywood walls. Both end walls 23 of the brace are beveled to fit flush, when the folding display booth is assembled, one against outer wing 16 and the other against a forward part of the side wall IQ of canopy 2. The abutting edges of oblique braces It, side wings i6, and side wall [9 of canopy 2 conveniently coincide for improved appearance and bracing purposes. The front wall 20 of each brace l8 may be, if desired, suitably hinged at its top edge to the front edge of top wall 25 of its respective brace It for servicing lamps therein. Said front wall of each brace is shown with a window opening closed by a glass, plastic or other translucent section 22 for advertising and illumination purposes.
Referring to the beveled end Walls 23 of oblique braces 18, it will be understood that the pivoting hinge 24 may be affixed at either one of the end walls 23 and the novel locking device contained in the other end wall 23. Said pivoting hinge 2 shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6 suitably attached to side wing 16, consists of a strap hinge 25 and a pivoting arm 26. Said strap hinge 25, in direction of its hinge pin, has a length conveniently equal to the height of brace l8, and is afiixed flush to the inner edge of said end wall 23 by a face of arm 26.

The lower slotted portion of keyhole slot I54 continues downward along the vertical center line of the slots 63. The length of slots 63 and the length of the lower slotted portion of keyhole slot 64 are suitably the same as the distance which upper lip 62 of keeper 56 projects above the top surface of keeper spacing plate 55 in this recovered position of keeper 56.' Pulling the keeper down to its lowermost position will register the enlargement of the keyhole slot with the headed pin 54 and thereby permit withdrawal of the head therethrough. All members 53 through 64 are metal, such as stainless steel.
Illumination for the translucent section 22 of J front side wall 25 of brace I8 or any other side wall of brace I8 requiring illumination is supplied by lamps or a light bulb such as fluorescent lamp 55 (see Fig. 4) After looking oblique brace I8 to side wall I9 of canopy 2 by either of the above mentioned methods, extension plug 55 for light 65 is inserted in a complementary receptacle 6? conveniently positioned on the outer surface of side wall I5. Illumination for the translucent section IQ of front side wall 8 of canopy 2 is 7 56 are disconnected. Considering the preferred embodiment of the novel locking device of two guide pins 35 and pivoting locking rod GI each oblique brace I8 is unlocked from canopy 2 in the following manner: Front side wall 28 of oblique brace I8 is raised and locking wing nut 42 is backed off from the inner surface of end wall 23 of said brace I8. Both locking rod II and juxtaposed wing nut 52 are pushed by hand through locking pin keyhole slot 36 in end wall 23 and sidewall 3? of said brace and into canopy locking rod pocket 45. Side wing I is swung backward, thereby removing the two guide pins braces I8 in their complementary grooves I4.
The closed outer wing extensions then form a front closure for the folded structure and are locked with suitable hasps and locks. Top wall 9 of canopy 2 and bottom wall I5 of pedestal 3 fit flush with the outer faces of side wings I5 and outer wing extension I! thereby interengaging with said side wings I6 and outer wing extensions I I for constituting a secure box or crate during shipment.
Considering now the alternative locking device consisting of top guide pin and bottom guide pin 35 and locking bolt 53 in end wall 23 of oblique brace I8, and keeper 56 in side wall I 9 of canopy 2, each oblique brace I8 is unlocked from canopy 2 in the following manner: A suitable finger is inserted into the undercut portion of keeper slot in side wall I9 of canopy 2 and I lower lip 6| of keeper 56 is pulled down as far as possible. With keeper 55 in this position, the upper circular portion of locking bolt keyhole 64 is aligned concentrically with guide pin hole 44 in canopy guide pin plate 6.3 on the outer surface of side wall I9, and the continuation holes through side wall I9 and keeper spacer plate 55. If side wing I5 is swung backward, lower guide pin 35 and locking bolt 53 can be withdrawn from keeper 56 and both guide pins slid from their reing the oblique brace to swing inward to outer wing I5 and downward along outer wing I6 as explained above. The above mentioned operation of folding and locking the side wings I6 and outer I wing extension I! against center section I is then repeated and the display booth has become its own transporting chest or crate.
It will now be clear from the foregoing description of the device of my invention that I have devised a combined folding display booth and transporting chest with several novel features. Due to the uniform height and width of side wings I6, outer wing extensions II and center section I, said device is capable of arrangement in an upright position when used as a display booth and is capable of folding around said center section I as to form its own transporting chest. Further, when assembled as a display booth, oblique braces I8 interconnect and maintain in rigid spaced relation hinged side wings I5 and illuminated canopy 2 of center section I. A further feature of my device is the transmission of light through the translucent section I?) of front side wall 8 of canopy 2 and through the translucent section 22 of front side walls 20 of oblique braces I8 for advertising purposes or I the transmission of light through similar trans- 35 of the brace I8 from guide pin holes 44 in sidewall I 9 of canopy 2. This allows oblique brace I8 to swing on strap hinge 25' against the inner surface of said wing I 6 and then pivot down on pivoting arm 26 along said inner surface of sidewing I5. At the end of this pivoting motion said brace I8 and pivoting arm 25 reach a vertical position perpendicular to the floor and the bottom edge of front side wall 25 is parallel to the outer vertical edge of side wing I5, as shown in Fig. 3. Side wings IE and juxtaposed oblique brace I8 are folded against the side walls I, thereby securing oblique braces I 8 in their respective complementary vertioal grooves I4 cut in the cornersof front side wall is of pedestal 3. In turn outer wing extensions l'I are folded against the front wall of center section I, thereby immobilizing oblique lucent sections in any other appropriate side wall of either canopy 2 or oblique braces I3 for auxiliary display lighting for hinged side wings I6 and center section display wall I. The use of pivoting hinge 25, consisting of strap hinge 25 and pivoting arm 25 to affix one end wall 23 of oblique brace I 8 to either the inner face of hinged side wing I5 or the forward portion of sidewall I9 of canopy 2 is a novel achievement.
An added characteristic of my invention is the unusual locking device for securing end side wall 23 of oblique brace I8, to, say, side pocket .45 through locking rod keyhole slot 35 in end wall 23 of brace I8 and is secured against the inner surface of said end wall 23 by tightening locking rod wing nut 42.
In the alternate embodiment of said locking device lower lip 6| of keeper 56 (inside canopy 2) is pulled down by finger aligning upper circular end of locking bolt keyway 54 with lower guide pin holes 44 and its continuation holes through side wall IQ of canopy 2 and keeper spacer plate 55. Upper guide pin 35 and lower guide pin 35 and locking bolt 53 projecting from end wall 23 of brace l8 are inserted into their respective guide pin holes 43 and continuations thereof. Lower lip 6| is released and recovery spring 51 pulls keeper 56 upward thereby looking under the head of locking bolt 53 in the lower slotted portion of locking bolt keyhole slot 64.
An added feature of my device is the hinging of front wall 8 of canopy 2 and front wall 20 of oblique braces 18, at the top from their respective top side walls to facilitate servicing lights 65 and 68 and the novel locking devices mentioned above.
An unusual principal part of my invention is the extended top side wall 9 of canopy 2 and extended bottom side wall l of pedestal 3. When said device is folded about center section I to form its own transporting chest, said walls 9 and I5 immobilize side wings l6 and outer wing extensions ll during shipment.
A further feature is the vertical grooves l4 cut in the corners of the front and side walls of pedestal 3, said grooves having a horizontal cross section complementary to oblique brace it. When said braces 18 are juxtaposed in grooves 14 for shipment, outer wing extensions ll folded against front wall of center section I prevent any motion of said braces I8 in transit.
A supplementary characteristic is the use of oblique rods 1 supporting the forward portion of bottom sidewall 5 of canopy 2 in parallel spaced relation to the top side wall of pedestal 3.
It is believed that the novel features of the device of my invention will be fully understood and while I have herein shown and described said features in detail, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may impart.
I claim:
1. A combined folding display booth and transporting chest comprising a back wall, two sides hinged to the side edges of the back wall, and front wall sections hinged respectively to outer edges of the said two sides, a fixed canopy projecting from the top part of the back wall and also constituting a top for the folded chest, said canopy having vertical walls depending below the level of the top of said side walls, and headers mounted to extend diagonally between said vertical side walls of the canopy and side walls in open position of the booth and hinged to hang vertically in closed position of the chest.
2. A combined folding display booth and transporting chest comprising a pedestal and a canopy above the pedestal and spaced therefrom, a back wall secured to and holding both said pedestal and canopy in fixed relation to each other, said canopy having vertical walls depending below the level of the top of said side walls, side walls hinged to the back wall, and headers hinged to said side walls and having releasable attachment to said vertical side walls of the canopy in display booth position.
3. A combined folding display booth and transporting chest comprising a back wall, two sides hinged to the side edges of the back wall, and front wall sections hinged respectively to outer edges of the said two sides, and a fixed canopy projecting from the top part of the back wall and also constituting a top for the folded chest, headers mounted to extend diagonally between said canopy and side walls in open position of the booth and hinged to hang vertically in closed position of the chest, and a pedestal at the bottom of said back wall beneath said canopy and having grooves for reception of the vertically hanging headers in closed position of the chest.
4. A folding display booth comprising a back wall, two side walls hinged to the back Wall and adapted to extend laterally therefrom at opposite sides thereof, a canopy projecting forwardly from said back wall,.said canopy having vertical walls depending below the level of the top of said side walls, headers each having pivotal mounting to the said side walls and also hinged to swing forwardly away from the side wall, and an interlocking releasable connection between forward end portions of the said headers and vertical side walls of the canopy.
5. A combined folding display booth and transporting chest comprising a pedestal and a canopy above the pedestal and spaced therefrom, a back wall secured to and holding both said pedestal and canopy in fixed relation to each other, side walls hinged to the back wall, said canopy having vertical walls depending below the level of the top of said side walls, headers having height substantially the height of said vertical walls of the canopy, and pivots for and next the under edges of the headers and below the level of the vertical walls of the canopy for locating the headers in opposition to the said vertical walls in open position of the booth and entirely below the canopy in closed position of the booth.
