\VASHINGTON HAWES, OF PORT RICHMOND, NEW YORK.
AUTOMATIC GRAiN SAh/IPLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,586, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed March '23, 188:2.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wasnmeron HAWES, of Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sampling Attachments to Devices or Apparatus for Delivering and Measuring Grain and other Substances, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figures 1 and 2 represent partly sectional elevations in planes at right angles with each other of a seed or grain measuring apparatus arranged on a platform-scale, with sampler or toller attached.
This invention, although applicable to sampling or tolling various substances besides seed or grain, including diflerent liquids, will here be described more particularly with reference to sampling seed or grain as delivered in bulk from an elevator or otherwise, and which may afterward be reconveyed byan elevator or other means to its place of deposit.
My invention consists in a sampler or toller which will sample fixed, measured, and equal quantities each time it is operated, and which will operate automatically or at stated intervals, and when attached to a measuring-receiver will act in concert with the valve used to discharge the measured load from said receiver, whereby greater accuracy in sampling is obtained, and the same motion that is used to open or close the discharge-valve of said re ceiver actuates the sampler.
The invention also consists in a novel construction ofsuch automatic measuring-sampler with inlet and outlet valves operatingin reverse relation with each other, and in special combinations of devices for controlling the discharge-valve of the receiver, so that it will act in concert with the sampling device, and whereby said discharge-valve will be locked or held closed when the measuring-receiver is being filled, and will be quickly released and opened when it is required to discharge the measured load therefrom.
In the drawings, A indicates the receivinghopper of a grain-measuring apparatus, pro- (No model.)
vided with the usual valve, 1), and handle 0 for opening and closing said valve by hand to control the supply of grain to the measuring-receiver B beneath. The hopper A has a fixed position, but the receiver B is seated upon the vplatform G of a platform-scale, O D, so that accordingly as said receiver is empty or is loaded with a given quantity of grain, as indicated by the weighted scale, it is free to rise and fall with the said platform. Every time the speci fied measurement, by weight, of grain in said receiver has been made to tip the scale the usual delivery-valve, E, at the bottom of said receiver, is opened to discharge the contents of said vessel. This valve is opened and closed, to put the measuring-receptacle B either into a receiving or discharging condition, by means of a rod, cl, attached to a crank, c, on a rockshaft,f, arranged within the body of the receiver and extending out through its side, with a handle, g, on its exterior end for operating it. The crank c is so set in relation with the valve E that when said valve is closed the crank reaches or passes slightly beyond its upper dead-center, and may at such point come in contact with a stop h. By thus arranging the crank e relatively to the valve E said valve when shut will be locked or held closed during the time the receptacle B is receiving its measured quantity of grain, and will he suddenly released and opened by the weight of the grain .to discharge the load so soon as the handle g is moved to start the crank back beyond its dead-center. This mode of operating the discharge-valve E insures both accuracy and dis- This tube is closed at its inner and outer ends I by slide-valves 7r 7c, and is of a suitable capacity'to hold a given quantity of grain, thereby forming a measuringsampler. Said valves may work between V-shaped guides at their side edges, and by their sliding action present but little resistance to the grain. They are operated by means of rods 1 l and eccentries at m on the rock-shaft f, so that they act in concert with the general delivery valve E, and are actuated by the same motion, thus dispensing with all additional sampling labor. The eccentrics m m are so set that the valves k k operate simultaneously in reverse directions,wh ereby when the one valve is open the other is closed, and so that when the receptacle B is receiving grain and the general discharge valve E is closed the outer slide valvek, is also closed, and the inner slide-valve, 7c, is open to allow grain to pass into and fill the sampler. On the other hand, when the discharge-valve E is open to deliver the measured load of grain from the receiver, the inner slidevalve, 70, is closed and the outer slide-valve, 7c, is open. Said slide-valves should have sufficient lap to give time for the opening and closingof the general discharge valve E. By means of this sampler or toller G samples, each of which has the same measurement, are automatically taken at stated intervals-that is, every time the measuring-receptacleB receives and discharges a load-which samples, when afterward mixed, may be resampled to give a correct average of the quality of the whole.
In cases where the grain is passed through a delivery duct or chamber without being weighed or measured, excepting by the car or boat load, the measuring-sampler G may beepplied to said duct or chamber to automatically draw measured samples at stated intervals by a uniform motion, which may be a continuous revolving one, of the shaftf; or,where the material to be measured and sampled does not usually vary in weight for a given bulk, the measuring-receiver may be a fixture and the platform-scale be dispensed with.
In such arrangement, as in the apparatus shown in the drawings, the automatic measuring-sampler G, with its reversely-operating valves at its opposite ends, should be applied to tap said receiver, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an apparatus for delivering or delivering and measuring grain and other substances in bulk, the combination, with the receptacle or chamber down through which the material being measured or delivered passes, of an automatic measuring sampler or toller arranged to tap said receptacle or chamber, and provided with reversely-operatin g valves at its opposite aaaaac ends, and means for actuatingthe same at intervals, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a measuring-receiver having a discharge-valve at or near its lower end, of an automatic measuring sampler or toller arranged to tap said receiver, and provided with reversely-operating valves at its opposite ends, and mechanism for actuating the discharge-valve of the measuring-receiver and valves of the measuring-sampler in timely relation with each other and by the same application of power to a prime mover or shaft, essentially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In apparatus for measuring grain and other substances, the combination, with a. measuring-receiver having a discharge-valve at or near its bottom, and a platform-scale on which said receiver is carried, of an automatic measuring sampler or toller arranged to tap said receiver, and provided with reversely-operating valves at its opposite ends, and mechanism for actuating, by the same application of power, the discharge-valve of said receiver and valves of the measuring-sampler in timely relation with each other, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the measuring-receiver B, provided with a discharge-valve, E, of the rock-shaftf, capable of operation from the exterior of said receiver, the rod or connection cl, and the crank 0, arranged in relation with said valve as herein described, and whereby the valve is held closed by the crank when reaching its upper dead-center, and is quickly released and opened in the back action of the crank, essentially as specified.
5. The measuring sampler or toller G, fitted with the slide-valves k k at its opposite ends, in combination with the reversely-set eccentrics m m, the rock-shaft f, and the rods or connectionsl Z, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, with the measuring-receiver B, provided with a discharge-valve, E, of the rock-shat'tf, the rod 07, and crank e, the reversely-set eccentrics m m upon said shaft, the rods 1 Z, and the measuring sampler or toller Gr, with its opposite end valves, 7a k, essentially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
