SLATE-CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,293, dated May 2, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, PHOEBE S. CORY and MARY E. MOORE, of Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SlateCleauers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish convenient and inexpensive means for cleansing slates, 850.; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as will be set forth, illustrated, and finally embodied in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A B 0 represent our improved slate cleaner, portions of which are broken away to more clearly show the arrangement of the parts, A being the stopper, B the body, and (J a sponge secured to the foot of the device.

In carrying out our invention we first form the tubular body B from one sheet of tin or other metal, celluloid, or any other appropriate material, and at a point preferably near the foot thereof is arranged and secured a diaphragm, d, forming an upper and a lower chamber, each end of said tubular body being open and adapted to receive, the upper a perforated stopper and thelower a sponge or other suitable pencil-mark eraser, all substantially as shown. Within said lower chamber is secured by means of the rivet s, or otherwise, a sponge, 0, so arranged as to be adapted to perform the function desired. The upper chamber is intended to receive the water or other cleansingfluid by the stopper A. Said stopper A is composed of the head I), through which passes a channel, 9, terminating in a slight perforation, adapted to allow the egress of water in small quantities. A perforated cork, c, is arranged upon a neck depending from said head, which said cork forms a watertight joint with the body B of the device. A threaded cap, a, en-

gages with the head I) and closes the perforation therein, as shown.

The operation of the device is as follows: After the parts are arranged and adapted to operate as described, the chamber is filled with water and the stopperA secured in posi tion, and when it is desired to wet the slate or article to be cleansed the screw-cap a is removed and a small quantity of water thrown out, afterwhich the sponge is applied, as will be understood. Should we desire, we may make a small perforation in the diaphragm, and the water passingthrough in small quantities upon the sponge will keep the said sponge con stantly damp for the same purpose.

We are aware that receptacles for liquids having sponges affixed and having stoppers of various kinds adapted to close said receptacles are old. We are further aware that perforated stoppers provided with caps are old, and therefore we do not wish to claim these features, broadly.

We are aware that perforated stoppers having means for closing the perforations, and that sponges secured in one end of a tubular body having a diaphragm therein, are not new, and we do not wish to be understood as claiming the same, broadly; but

We claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a slatecleaner formed of the tubular body B, open at each end and ,separated by a diaphragm into receiving-chambers, an erasing substance secured in one of said chambers, a perforated cork having a channeled head arranged therewith, aud a cap closing the channel in said head, the whole being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
