Description
T. A. CLIFFORD Oct. 9, 1951 GARMENT Filed June 1947 INVENTOR. 772201075 Q /z/fo zzi Patented Oct. 9, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Theodore A. Clifford, Chicago, 111.
Application June 27, 1947, Scrial No. 757,616
3 Claims.
This invention has to do with a garment'ano more particularly concerns a body covering garment wherein a nether portion is shaped and constructed in a manner facilitating its attachment and support from a waist portion.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a nether'garment having a wraparound skirt section with ends adapted to be disposed to the front of a person wearing the same, a front flap portion depending from the rear of the skirt and swingable forwardly between the legs of the wearer and upwardly beneath the forwardly disposed end portions of the skirt, and the upper edge of the skirt end portions and the upper edge of the upwardly swung flap having fastening means complemental to fastening means on a waist piece for detachable connection therewith.
A further object is the provision of a nether garment of the character set forth in the preceding object, wherein the forwardly disposed ends of the wrap-around skirt are disposed in opposed spaced-apart relation, leaving a portion of the front flap exposed, thus facilitating access to the fastening means at the upper edge of the fastened flap.
A further object is'the provision of a nether garment according to either of the preceding objects which is adapted to be supported from a waist piece forming part of a common garment with such nether garment portion or forming a separate garment having a waist piece.
A still further object is the provision of a nether garment of simple sturdy construction embodying the advantages inherent in a garment constructed according to any of the above objects and creating the impression of a skirt, particularly as viewed from the front.
These and other desirable objects encompassed by and inherent in the invention will be more fully understood from the ensuing description and the annexed drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a garment embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a View taken similarly to Fig. 1 but drawn to smaller scale and illustrating the garment with a front flap thereof in a lowered unfastened position;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a shirt'waist which is co-operable with the nether portion of the garment shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
The complete garment shown in Figs. 1, 2
and 3 comprises an upper garment portion ll 2. forsuspension from the shoulders of a wearer and for fitting about the upper body and waist of the wearer, and a skirt-like nether garment portion l2 detachably associated with the por tion H.- r V Garment portion ll comprises a waist piece I3 for disposal at the front of the-wearer adjacently to the waistline. Suspender straps M are suitably attached to the upper edge ofthe waist piece l3, and after extending upwardly over the shoulders of the wearer may be crossed in the rear as illustrated in several figures of the drawings for attachment to the upper edge of the rear of the nether garment I2 by means of buttons [5 on the free ends of the straps and engaging button holes, not shown, in the nether garment.
The waist portion it of the upper garment counterpart has two vertically-spaced horizontal rows of fastening elements in the form of buttons. The fastening elements in the upper row are designated l5 while those in the lower row are designated l'I.
Nether garment l2 comprises a wrap-around skirt I8 of which the center is for disposal at the rear of the wearer and has end portions IQ for disposal t the front of the wearer. There are two button holes 2|, Fig. 1, adjacently to the upper edge of each end portion l 9. Two of these button holes 2| cooperate with respective buttons H5 at the sides of the waist piece, whereas the other two register for cooperation with the single button 16 at the center of the waist piece [3, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
A front flap 22 depends from the rear lower edge of the skirt l8 and is connected therewith by a crotch section 23 of diminished width. The free end of the flap 22 has button holes 24 for respective cooperation with the buttons IT, on the waist piece and spaced below the buttons l6, when said flap is swung forwardly and upwardly in ing with the button hole fastening means 2| and 24 of the nether garment l2 in the same manner as the buttons l6 and ll of the suspender strap garment. Buttons 3| upon the rear of the garment 25 cooperate with the button holes, not shown, on the rear of the nether garment.
This garment has the advantage of combining the features of simplicity in design and pleasing appearance with the utility feature of accessibility through the space afforded by the spaced front ends of the wrap-around skirt facilitating selfattention by a child in unfastening and re-fastening the front flap attaching means. Other advantages and variations of structure contemplated by and falling within the scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention with the view of concisely and clearly illustrating the same, I claim:
1. A childs garment comprising a front waist panel, two horizontal, vertically spaced rows of buttons on the outer surface of said waist panel, a pair of shoulder straps attached to theupper. portion of said panel, a button on the outer end of each shoulder strap, a wrap-around skirt, buttonholes along the upper edge of said skirt for fastening to the strap buttons and'to selected buttons in the upper row on the front of the panel, a flap attached to the bottom of the wrap-around skirt, and buttonholes on the outer edge of said flap for fastening to the lower row of buttons on the panel.
2. A childs garment comprising a panel adapted to cover the upper front portion of the body and extending downwardly to the waistline, a'pai r' of shoulder straps attached to the upper portion of said panel, a plurality of fasteners attachedto the front of said panel adjacent the waistline, a fastener attached to the outer end of each strap, a wrap-around skirt, fasteners .00- operative with the fasteners on the strap posi- 4 tioned centrally of the top edge of said skirt, a cooperative fastener at each outer top edge of the skirt for attaching to one of the fasteners on the front of the said panel, a flap attached to the bottom of the wrap-around skirt, and cooperative fasteners along the outer edge of said flap for attaching to fasteners on said panel.
3. A childs garment comprising a panel adapted to engage the front portion of the body at the waistline, two horizontal, vertically spaced REFnRENoEs CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
