v ORVEL C. VELIE, OF OORNING, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONELHALF TO JOHN N. HUNGERFORD, OF SAME PLAGE.
BLIND-ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 256,254, dated April 11, 1882. Application tiled February 10, 188%. (N o model.)
To all whom 4it may concern Be it known that I, ORvEL C. VELIE, of
Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and use- 5 ful Improvements in Blind-Adjusters; and Ido hereby declare that the followin gis a full, clear, and exact description ottheinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin gs, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanism for operating the slats of blinds, by which the ordinary rod connecting the slats may be dispensed with, whereby I am enabled to use glass in the manufacture of the slats, as well as wood or metal; and to this end the invention consists in novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents an elevation ofthe blind 5 Fig. 2, a vertical section through the line w ac of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the line y y, Fig. 1- Fig. 4, detailed front and end view of one of'the slats.
In the drawings, A represents the stiles or frames of an ordinary Venetian blind, having mortises B in the inner sides of the vertical stiles for the tenons C on the blind-slats D. The tenons G at one end of all the slats are provided with grooves d, which correspond with the shape ot' a series of lugs or teeth, e, on a bar, E, arranged in a recess in one ot' the stiles over the mortises B, and which lugs or teeth lare so arranged on the bar E that one lug or tooth will it in thegrooved tenon'of each slat. The recess f for the reception of .the bar E is made a short distance longer than said bar, in order that said bar may have the necessary vertical playin the operation of opening and closing the slats. The lower end of the bar E is provided with a stud, g, projecting out through a vertical slot, h, in the stile, .and which stud is provided with a knob,
t', by means of which the bar may be operated. By having the tenons of theslats at one and the same ends grooved as. shown, and the lugs or teeth 'of the vertically-movable bar engaging therewith, the slats are all operated simultaneously, and thereby respectively opened or closed inthe downward or upward movement gf said har.
By the above-described construction a blindslat adjuster is perfected which is at once ,simple in operation and not liable to get out of order.
In the use ot wooden sla-ts metal tenons may be used, or wooden tenons having the grooves therein lined with sheet meta-l to obviate wear.
In the use ot' metal, glass, or similar material for slats the tenons may be formed integraltherewith and the grooves therein in the process of manufacturing the same.
of the slats having grooved tenons at one end and a vertically-movable bar having a series of lugs or teeth adapted to engage said grooved tenons, whereby the slats may be simultaneously operated by the movement of said bar, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
2. The combination ofthe blind-frame having mortises B and a recess,f, and slot h, the slats D, having tenons. O, provided with grooves d at one end, and a vertically-movable bar, E, having lugs or teeth e, adaptedto engage said grooved tenons, and a projecting stud, g, provided with a knob, t', the several parts constructed and arranged relatively to each other substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
