Patented June 26, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RECLINING CHAIR George B. Ghesley, Stratf-ord, Conn.
Application November 22, 1946, Serial 'No. 711,603
for the user, when the device is in either an upright or reclining position.
Another object of my invention is to provide "a device that may be adjusted to a reclining position and retained in that position without any manually manipulated locking means.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device that will provide additional support to fit the contour of the-occupants body when the device is in a reclining position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device that is provided with cushions arranged to permit proper contour Without any obstructing members interfering with the body of the applicant, when the device is locked in a reclining position.
Obviously, the device may be constructed in a simple manner for the service intended, and may be economically constructed to serve the purpose for which it is intended.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, and when taken in conjunction with the drawing in which Figure 1 is a side View of the device in a normal or upright position.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device as shown in Figure 1 in a reclining position.
Figure 3 is a top view of the device as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a back'view of the device as shown in Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View of a portion of the device showing the roller arrangement supporting the auxiliary cushion.
Similar characters of references indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same the device consists of a seat portion In which may be covered with any conventional type of upholstery, a base portion II supporting the seat portion III. This base Il may be rigidly attached to the floor 12 as shown, or it may be constructed in a manner to form a solid and substantial base for the device, and in a manner to keep it from tipping when the occupant has the device in a reclining position.
The base II is provided with a rearwardly extending member l3 which acts as a support for a pair of back rest support members l4 and I4 which are hingedly attached to the member I 3 at I 5. The back rest cushion I6'is provided with additional strap members I- l' into which the back rest supports I4 and I4 are permitted to slidably move, and the back rest supports M and M are provided with outwardly extending pin members l8 which engage the straps I! when the device is in a reclining position.
The rearwardly extending member I3 is also provided at each side with track members l9 and I9, which track members are provided with an upwardly extending hook portion 20 which acts as a stop for a pair of rollers 2| and 2| which engage the track members [9 and I9 and which roller members are attached to an auxiliary cushion 22 which is hingedly supported to the back rest cushion I6 at 23. There are also a pair of link members 24 and 24' attached to the hinge portion 23 attaching the auxiliary cushion 2'2 and back rest cushion I6 to a centrally disposed point 25' on the base member I I.
It will be noted by referring to Figures 1 and '2',
that when the occupant of the seat desires to recline his position, it is merely necessary to push or exert pressure backward on the back rest cushions I6, which will cause the back rest supports l4 and M to assume an angular position and the back supports I4 and I4 will then slidably engage the straps l'l until the pins [8 in the back rest members l4 and I4 engage the bottom of the straps N. This will cause the auxiliary'cushion 22 to slide forward 'and will cause the rollers 2| and 2| to rotatably contact the track members l9 and [9 to a point where the rollers 2I and 2| contact the hooks 20 on the track members I9 and I9 as shown in Figure 2, and the link members 24 and 24' will support the entire assembly in a reclining position.
This arrangement permits the contour of the body of the patient to form a radial position engaging the back rest cushion IS, the auxiliary cushion 22, and the seat cushion ID in more or less a radial manner, and will support the kidney portion of the back of the user for that additional support which, obviously is imperative in a good many instances for the proper reclining posture of the applicant and for the relaxing of the applicants spine.
In the chosen embodiments of my invention, exemplified by the acompanying drawings, there are present many features not heretofore disclosed in the prior art. However, I am fully cognizant of the fact that many changes in the form and configuration of the component parts may be made without affecting their efliciency or operativeness, and I reserve the right to make such changes as I may deem necessary or convenient without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
l. A device of the character described comprising in combination a base, a cushion disposed at the top of said base, a back rest, a back rest cushion slidably mounted to said back rest, an auxiliary cushion, said back rest hingedly attached to said base, said auxiliary cushion hingedly attached at its top to the lower portion of said back rest cushion, a pair of track members attached to said base, rollers mounted to the bottom of said auxiliary cushion for engagement with said track members, arresting means on said track members to limit the travel of said rollers, and arresting means on the back rest to limit the angular movement of said back rest cushion, and link members hingedly supporting the bottom of said back rest to said base.
2. A device of the character described comprising in combination a base, a horizontal cushion supported by said base, a back rest, a back rest cushion slidably mounted to said back rest, an auxiliary cushion, said back rest hingedly attached at its bottom to said base, said auxiliary cushion hingedly attached at its top to the lower portion of said back rest cushion, a pair of rails mounted on said base, rollers disposed on the lower edge of said auxiliary cushion, said rollers arranged for engagement with said rails, said rails provided with arresting means to limit the travel of said rollers on said auxiliary cushion, arresting means for limiting the angular movement of said back rest cushion in its angular relation with said base, and link members attached to the bottom of said back rest cushion and to a point on said base for supporting said device when said back rest is at its arrested point, to maintain an angular relation of said back rest, auxiliary cushion, and seat cushion on said base.
3.. A reclining chair of the character described comprising in combination a horizontal seat 4 cushion, said seat cushion supported by a base, a back rest, said back rest provided with an upholstered cushion, a pair of link members attached to the bottom of said back rest and to said base, a pair of back rest support members hingedly attached to said base, said support members slidably engaging said back rest cushion, means on said support members for arresting the travel of said support members by acting with a strap on said back rest, an auxiliary cushion hingedly attached at its top to the lower portion of said back rest cushion, said auxiliary cushion provided with rollers at its lower end, a pair of angularly disposed rails supported by said base, said rails arranged for engagement with the rollers on said'auxiliary cushion, arresting means on said rails to arrest the travel of said rollers when engaging said rails.
4. A'chair device of the character described comprising a base portion, a horizontal seat cushion disposed at the top of said base, a back rest hingedly attached to said base, a back rest cushion slidably engaging said back rest, means on said back rest for arresting the travel of said cushion, an auxiliary cushion hingedly attached at its top to the bottom of said back rest cushion, a pair of rails attached to said base, rollers rotatably mounted to the bottom of said auxiliary cushion, said rollers arranged for engagement with said rails, arresting means on said rails to limit the travel of said rollers on said rails, and link members hingedly attached to said base and to the bottom of said back rest cushion.
