This invention relates to a surgical appliance more particularly described as a colostomy closure or guard.
It is an object of the inventionto provide a colostomy guard having a colostomy icup which is adjustably posit onable with respect to the colostomy opening it closes or protects.
Another object of the invention -is to provide a colostomy guard whichreduces to a minimum the surface area of the device contacting the body of the wearer.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a colostomy guard which is neat in appearance, is entirely sanitary and which is "shaped so as not to present or cause ob'jectionable'bulges in the clothing of the wearer.
Other objects and advantages will becom apparent as the specification proceeds and a more comprehensive understanding of the invention will be aflorded from the following detailed description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are, respectively, top, side and end views of a colostomy guard embodying the instant invention.
In brief, the invention is embodied in a colostomy plate which is held in position by means of a web or elastic belt passed around the body of the wearer. Into the abdominal plate there is threaded a single piece colostomy cup which, when screwed into position in the plate, passes an open end of the cup to encircle a colostomy opening in the abdominal wall against which the plate is held. Both the abdominal plate and the colostomy cup are vented for a purpose well known in the art.
While no particular emphasis is placed upon the material used and no claim is made thereto, the guard is preferably made of a suitable transparent plastic and includes a concaved abdominal plate H. To the outer surface of the abdominal plate there are fixed two clamp brackets l2 and I3 which provides attaching means for a web or elastic belt M by means of which the abdominal plate is held in its customary position on the body of the wearer. One end of the belt I4 is permanently attached to the clamp bracket l2 and the other end of the belt is disconnectedly attached to the bracket It by a removable clamp It.
The abdominal plate II is provided with a centrally disposed I threaded opening I1 into which is threaded a colostomy cup fitting l8.
As shown in the various views the abdominal plate II, which is oblong, is formed with a concavity in a manner such that the two underen'd surfaces 19 and 2"! =are adapted to be pressed tightly against an'abdominal wall when'the guard is held in its customary position of use. Due to the'concavi-ty of the plate, the centrally disposed undersurfaces 22 of the plate I I are spaced from and lie outwardlyfrom the abdominal wall thus reducing the contacting surfaces of the abdom-' inal plate to a minimum area defined by the ends land 21 of the plate.
Additionally, the abdominal plate H is provided with a-series of vent holes 23 which are so positioned as to communicate with a substantially open space *lying between the centrally disposed concave surface 22 of the abdominal plate II and the abdominal wall against which the same is held when in use. Similarly, the colostomy cup I8 is provided with a plurality of vent holes 24 also opening into the space just defined. In this manner provision is made for the escapement of gases outwardly fromthe colostomy opening through and from the guard.
As best Viewed in Fig. 2, the particular mounting of the colostomy cup I8, that is, its threaded engagement with the abdominal plate ll, providesthe means through which the open end walls 25 of the colostomy cup 18 may be adjustably urged against an abdominal wall to encircle a colostomy opening therein. Although no limitation is intended, it is to be pointed out that a cup approximately two inches in diameter gives very satisfactory results, providing adequate protection and maximum comfort. Further, the cup may be replaced by a threaded fitting leading to a drain bag. With the usual patient, and under usual circumstances, this is not required, but such provision is practicable and intended for the unusual patient, or under necessary circumstances.
Although the guard has been described primarily as a colostom guard, it is to be pointed out that the same provides other uses in its customary manner for enclosing and protecting postoperative drains. In connection with any of the uses to which the device may be put, the colostomy cup I8 is adapted to receive absorbent pads either treated or untreated.
Due to the fact that the colostomy cup 58 is adjustably positioned in the abdominal plate I I, its closing position can be set very accurately to exert only sufficient pressures to close the colostomy. The device is adjustable to the individual requirements of patients of different anatomical builds.
Various changes may be made in the details of from said Wall, said plate further having a plurality of vent holes made therein t communicate with a space between said plate and said walls,
, internal threads about a centrally disposed opens ing in the plate, a colostomy cup having threads engaging the threads in said centrally disposed opening of said plate to cause an open end of the cup to encircle a colostomy opening in said abdominal wall and bear against the wall with adjustable pressures, said cup having a plurality fitting having an inner edge to engage andpress 'about'the colostomy opening, and threads on the fitting engaging in said threads of the centrally disposed opening whereby the pressure exerted thereby may be adjusted to the wearer.
3. A colostomy guard comprising a. concave abdominal plate presenting outer edges adapted to be pressed tightly against an abdominal wall surrounding a colostomy opening and an inner surface bounded by said edges spaced beyond said "abdominal wall, said plate having a centrally disposed opening, internal threads in said opening,
. a belt for holding said plate in position as aforeof vent holes made therein communicating with said space between said plate and said wall, and a belt attached to said plate for holding the same in position against said abdominal wall.
2., A colostomy guard comprising a concave abdominal plate presenting outer edges adapted to be pressed tightly against an abdominal wall surrounding a colostomy opening and an inner surface bounded by said edges spaced beyond said abdominal wall, said plate having a centrally disposed opening, internal threads in said opening, a belt for holding said plate in position as aforesaid on the body of a wearer, a cylindrical said on the body of the wearer, a cylindrical cup with an open end presenting a circumferential edge to engage and press about the colostomy opening, and threads on the periphery of the cup engaging in the threads of the opening whereby the pressure exerted by the edge of the open end may be adjusted to the wearer.
