Description

UNITED STATES EUGNE DUCI-IAMP, OF ST.
APPARATUS FOR Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all who/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGNE DUCHAMP, of St. Martinsville, in the parish of St. Martins and State of Louisiana., have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boilers for Bleaching Clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l represents a vertical cross section taken centrally through the entire apparatus.
This invention relates to the boiling and bleaching of clothes so as to extract grease and the free dirt therefrom preparatory to submitting them to a washing operation by rubbing, etc.
A represents a large tank made of wood, or otherwise, and having a perforated or. false bottom, B, raised slightly above the bottom of the tank. In the center of this tank is placed the furnace, which is a cylindrical chamber, C, as deep as the tub, A, surrounded by an outer casing, D, which latter has perforations, E E, at the top and bottom, so as to allow the water which is put into the tub to circulate freely around the fire-chamber, 0.
F is a draft pipe which passes down between the two cylinders, C and D, and under the grate-bars, G, in the fire-chamber, C, so as to supply a suflicient draft to keep up the fire.
H is a pipe opening in the side of the chamber, C, for carrying olf the smoke.
J is a cover, or it may be a kettle placed on top of the fire-chamber, C.
The water charged with the requisite amount of soap is placed in the tub, A, a. being the water line, and then the clothes to be boiled or bleached. IVhen the water arrives at the boiling point the circulation begins to rapidly increase, following the di- PA'IENT GFFICE.
MARTINSVILLE, LOUISIANA.
HEATING WATER.
25,399, dated September 13, 1859.
'rection of the arrows indicated in the drawing. The current between the cylinders takes an upward direction and passes out at the perforations in the top of the cylinder, D, while the water of a lower telnperature passes in at the bottom of the cylinder, and comes in contact with the heating surface of the fire-chamber, C. In this manner a rapid rotation and circulation of the water in the tub is carried on, the currents all tending downward in the clothes apartment while the current between the cylinders rapidly ascends and passes out at the top of the cylinder upon the clothes.
In the operation of bleaching clothes with this apparatus, after the water, soap and clothes are placed in the tub a woolen cloth containing an alkali, such as ashes, is placed on the top of the clothes. When the boiling commences the water passes through the ashes, and down through the clothes carrying with it an alkaline solution, and precipitating the heavy matters extracted from the garments in the bottom of the tub. This circulation of the water diffuses and disseminates the charged water through the clothes, carrying with it in its passage down through the clothes the dirt contained therein, instead of keeping the particles, extracted from the garments, held in solution among them as is the case with boilers now in use.
I do not claim, broadly, the attachment of a fire-grate and pot to a boiler; but
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement with the false bottom B, and tank A, of the perforated casing D, fire-chamber C, draft pipe F, smoke pipe H, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
EUGNE DUCHAMP.
