TWIN GLIDER SWING Fred W. Hart, La Grange, Ind.
Application June 9, 1945, Serial No. 598,430
1 Claim. 1
a swing with pivoted tilting seats through means of which the swing is largely operated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a swing having foot treadles for assisting in operating the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a swing of the above stated nature in which handles' are provided for by means of which a child will be able to hold on to the seat when throwing its weight back to tilt the seat and assist in propelling the swing.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of my improved glider swing,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device,
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Like reference characters denote like parts in both the drawings and specification in which |0 indicates my invention which consists of a framework including uprights |2, I3, I4 and I5, connected by braces l6, ll, l8 and I9. The members l2 and I3, are connected at the upper ends by a head-piece 2|, and directly ibBlOW a spindle 22, which extends through a bore (not shown) in a rocker member 23, to which a depending bar 24, is attached.
The members I4 and I5, are likewise provided with a head connecting piece 25, and a spindle 26, to which a depending bar 21, is pivotally connected.
To the lower extremity and to the opposite sides 28 and 29, of said bars are pivotally connected by pins 30 and 3 I, a pair of horizontal bars 32 and 33. To the outer edges 34 and 35, of bars 24 and 21, are attached outwardly extending seats 36 and 31, the inner bifurcated extension portions 38 and 39, of which straddle the bar 24 and 21, respectively with the terminals 40 and 4|. The seats are supported by brackets 42 and 43, the arms 44 and 45, of which extend horizontally under the seats to about the rear edges 46 and 41, of the seats and the vertical arms 48 and 49,
of the brackets project down along the sides 34 and 35, respectively of the bars 24 and 21, and are securely attached thereto.
As the seats 36 and 31, extend entirely beyond the terminals 63 and '64, of the horizontal supporting member 65, formed by members 32 and 33, and as pins 30 and 3|, form a fulcrum therefor, the weight of a child on one seat pushing with her feet against the treadle adjacent the same will tend to throw the other seat away and up and the weight of the other seat coming down .and a similar action of a child thereon will cause the first seat to swing back and rise; the action can be continued indefinitely with very little effort on the part of the users of the swing, the projecting weight on each end accomplishing most of the necessary power to operate the swing.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A swing comprising a support including a pair of oppositely disposed inclined trapezoidal frames, crossed side braces connected between the upper ends of the frames, head members connected between the upper ends of the sides of each of the frames, bearing spindles mounted between the sides of each of the frames below the head members, rocker members swivelly secured on the spindles, parallel depending bars securely affixed to the inner surfaces of the rocker members for oscillatory movement on the spindle, base rails pivotally connected at their opposite ends to the lower ends of the bars, foot plates secured to said base rails and extending laterally therefrom, outwardly extending seats having inner bifurcated extension portions rigidly connected to the 3 outer edges of said bars, support brackets con UNITED STATES PATENTS nected. with the lower surface of the extending Number Name D t seats and the bars, and handle bars directly se- 822,083 Stevens May 29, 1906 cured to the inner surface of the bars above the 1,254,890 Douglass Jan. 29, 1918 ,13 5 1,259,649 McGuire Mar. 19, 1918 FRED HART 1,264,172 Fritz Apr. 30, 1918 1,271,126 Bretz July 2, 1918 REFERENCES CITED 1,345,333 J ochumsen et a1.
