HOLDER FOR COLD CHISELS AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 1, 1946 20% WAw #7127 Warn Patented May 2, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOLDER FOR COLD CHISELS AND THE LIKE Guy Willas McClain, Detroit, Mich.
Application November 1, 1946, Serial No. 707,218
2 Claims.
This invention relates to hand tools, and has particular reference to a, tool for supporting a cold chisel, granite chisel, star drill, center punch, or like tools during a work operation.
An obj ct of the invention is to provide a handle whereby hand tools of the character indicated above may be supported and struck with a hammer without danger of injuring the mechanics hand.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated which is constructed and arranged in such manner that a cold chisel or the like may be firmly gripped and held in operating position with greater efliciency.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated which makes possible the holding of a cold chisel or similar tool in different angular positions with greater ease than is possible when the same tool is held directly in the palm of the hand.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the within disclosure, in which drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with parts in section to illustrate the position of other parts.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed, the device consists of a comparatively long shank l which is provided with a grip 8, preferably made of rubber or other flexible material, which is press-fitted or molded thereon to provide a shock absorbing hand grip. The shank 1 is preferably formed with a round cross section, but is provided with a large octagonal shaped portion 9, which is adapted to accommodate a wrench, whereby the shank 1 may be rotated as hereinafter described. The shank l is threaded, as at [0, to accommodate the end member H, which is internally threaded, as at l2. The end member II is provided with a longitudinal bore l3 adapted to accommodate the cylindrical end M of a floating jaw l5, which is positioned in the transverse opening [6 formed in the circular head I! of the member II. The inner peripheral wall l8 of the head member I1 is serrated to match corresponding serrations formed on the end of the floating jaw I5, whereby the cold chisel or other tool may be gripped therebetween.
A jam nut I9 is carried on the threads [0, and
is adapted to be moved into locking position against the end of the member I I to prevent the rotation thereof when the device is in operation.
In order to use the device, the jam nut i9 is rotated away from the end of the member ll, so that the shank 1 and member II are free to rotate with respect to one another.
The members i and l I are then rotated with respect to one another so that the floating jaw l5 may recede to provide a sufiicient clearance for the introduction of the cold chisel or other tool into the opening l6. After the tool has been inserted into the opening iii, the shank l is preferably rotated with respect to the member ll, so that the end of the shank l abuts the member 14 to outwardly move the floating jaw [5 into locking engagement with the cold chisel or other tool to be held.
When sufficient pressure is exerted by the floating jaw 15 on the tool to be held, the jam nut I9 is moved into position against the end of the member i I and the device is ready for operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a substantially long shank having a shock absorbing hand grip thereon, means to rotate said shank, threads on said shank extending from said last named means to the end of said shank, an end member having a heavy walled circular head with a large transverse opening therein, a threaded longitudinal bore in said end member engaging the threads of said shank, a jamb nut 0n the threads of said shank and contacting the end of said end member, and a, floating jaw in the transverse opening of said end member and having an extension in contact with the end of said shank.
2. The combination defined in claim 1, in which said floating jaw has a serrated arcuate edge oppositely disposed to a serrated edge formed on the wall of the said circular head.
GUY WILLAS McCLAIN.
