Description

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND SMALLEY, OF SPARKILL, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO- EDWARD D. MERRITT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
LUBRICATING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,009, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed October 20, 1881. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND SMALLEY, of
Sparkill, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lubricating (Jompound, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a lubricating compound for car-axle boxes and other lubricating purposes, containing tallow, pine-tar, and sulphur, and, preferably, also chloride of sodium and biborate of soda,in about the proportions, by weight, hereinafter named: tallow, thirtytwo (32) parts; sulphur, two (2) parts; pinetar, one (1) part; chloride of sodium, or cornmon salt, one (1) part; biborate of soda, or borax, in powder, one (1) part. Iinelt the tallow in a suitable kettle and then add the other ingredients, which are properly and thoroughly mingled and incorporated by stirring.
This compound is verydurable and economical, and lasts longer than many other lubricating compounds, because it holds together in the axle box or bearing wherein it is used, and only such part becomes fluid as is in contact with or in close proximity to the wearingsurface or journal. A car-box properly supplied with this lubricating compound has been run over thirty-five thousand miles without needing to be replenished.
I may for some purposes employ only tallow, pine-tar, and sulphur, and in such the relative proportions of these ingredients are the same as above stated, and they are mixed in the same way. I prefer to employ the chloride of sodium, or salt, and the biborate of soda, or borax.
I do not confine myself to the exact proportions hereinabove stated, as they may be varied in making the compound for some purposes; but the above proportions I have found useful in practice.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lubricating compound containing tal- 1ow,pine-tar, and sulphur, in proportions substantially as herein set forth.
2. The lubricating compound composed of tallow, sulphur, pine-tar, chloride of sodium, and biborate of soda, in proportions substantially as herein set forth.
EDMUND SMALLEY.
