Description
Jan. 10, 1950 J. R. NIOLON INVERSIVE FOLD DIAPER Filed Nov. 12, 1948 Patented Jan. 10, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INVERSIVE FOLD DIAPER Joseph R. Niolon, near Bessemer, Ala. Application November 12, 1948, Serial No. 59,559
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an inversive fold diaper. It has for its main objects to provide such a diaper that will be highly efiicient for its purpose, cheap to manufacture, simple in structure, and free of all kinds of attachments for its use. There are many types of diapers in use including the ordinary flat piece of cloth type and many kinds with fastening means that are very objectional and often cause injury to the wearer, and are not suited for cleaning in washing machines that are inclined to tear oil the fastening devices. The ideal diaper desired is one that will have plenty of absorbing cloth between the legs of a child without being bulky, and at the same time be thin around the waist, and also be free of complicated attaching means. The present invention possesses all the desired qualities in that it is all cloth free from attaching devices, is provided with six layers of cloth in compact form for use between the legs of a child to thus avoid causing the child to become bowlegged, has only two layers of cloth in the around the waist portion, and is adapted to be held in place for use by two ordinary type safety pins.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawing and description.
By referring generally to the drawing, part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. 1 is a plan view of a piece of cloth of a kind used for diapers; Fig. 2 is the same piece of cloth folded to half size with its selveged edges parallel with each other; Fig. 3 is a view of the folded cloth with seams sewed into same to define flap portions; Fig. 4. is a view of Fig. 3 with the ends indicated in broken lines cut off; Fig. 5 is a perspective view plainly showing Fig. 4 with ends cut off with a human hand inserted toward the closed bottom for turning the diaper inside out; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing how the diaper would appear reversed with one end open and one end closed.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the diaper comprises a fiat piece of cloth I folded over upon itself with its selveged edges 2 together, and having seams 3 and 4 sewed therein to thus define curved portions or flaps 5. Then in this condition the end portions 6 and 1 are cut off to leave the diaper in the shape as shown in Fig. 5 with the flaps on the outside. Then by manual means the hand 8 takes hold of the inner face of the bottom portion 9 and pulls it through the open top I resulting in the flaps being inside as shown in Fig. 6. In this condition the diaper is flattened resulting in the flaps and the middle portions forming a center fiat pad consisting of six layers of cloth. The diaper for use is placed with the narrow padded portion l I between the legs of the child with ends 12 and I3 fastened together on one side with an ordinary safety pin and the ends l4 and I5 similarly fastened on the other side. To clean the diaper it is reversed in order to get the flaps on the outside as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
From the foregoing it will appear that when not in use with the flaps on the outside the diaper consists ofonly two layers of cloth, thus being adapted for easy cleaning and drying. By the inversive action it is prepared for use with six layers of cloth where most needed between the legs of the child and only two layers around the waist to thus avoid too much covering, especially in warm weather. 1
The diaper may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but I prefer to use the kind of cloth generally used for diapers. Also the diaper may be made in various sizes, and of thick or thin cloth.
While I have shown anddescribed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure or design, but reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the spirit and scope of the invention and the following "claim.
Having described my invention I claim:
In an inversive fold diaper comprising; a piece of cloth folded over upon itself, two seams sewed into said double cloth adjacent the center portion thereof, said two seams starting at one edge of the double cloth and extending to the opposite edge and defining between them an approximate hourglass-shape, said seams continuing from said points and defining a flap portion on each side and integral with the portion within the hourglass outline, one end of the hourglass portion being open between the layers of the cloth and from one seam juncture with the edge of the cloth to the opposite similar juncture, the other end of the hourglass-shaped portion being closed by the folded edge of the cloth, the ends of the double cloth terminating slightly beyond the outer seams of the said flaps.
