The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and more particularly to a toy riding horse or pony.

An important object of the invention is to provide a toy animal figure, such as a horse, on which a child may ride and embodying means for moving the toy over the ground in a realistic manner by foot pedals operated by the child.

A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for steering the toy through the provision of handle-bars connected to the front legs of the toy.

Another object of th invention is to construct a toy horse to include a saddle having imitation Western style stirrups to conceal the foot pedals for driving the toy and also providin handlebars for steering the horse at the pommel of the saddle within convenient reach by the child occupying the saddle.

A still further object is to provide a toy of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the body of the animal and taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of one of the front legs of the toy taken on a line 44 of Figure 2.

Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the pedal operated drive means for the rear wheels of the toy, and

Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view through the steering post for the front legs taken substantially on a line 6-8 of Figure 2.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a toy horse generally and which includes a hollow body 8, front legs I rigidly formed with shoulders 8 and rear legs 9 rigidly formed at the rear end of the body.

The front legs 1 are provided with axles III on which front wheels II are journalled and each of the rear legs 9 is provided with a crank 2 Claims: (01. ass-1.15)

axle I 2 to which rear wheels l3 are suitably secured.

A crank shaft [4 is journalled in the body 6 at its rear portion and includes cranks I5 connected to the cranks of the rear axles l2 by connecting rods l8 whereby the motion of the crank shaft- I 4'is transmitted to the rear axles I2 for driving the wheels l3.

A sprocket I1 is secured to the crank shaft l4 driven-by a chain 18 from a sprocket I9 which is secured to a transverse shaft 20 journalled in the front lower portion of the body 6 and having pedal cranks 2| at the ends thereof and which carry pedals 22 projecting outwardly at the opposite sides of the body.

The front end of the body 6 is formed with a vertical semi-circular curve 23 in which the rounded vertical rear edge 24 of the shoulder portion 8 is seated for horizontal swinging movement.

A forwardly extending apertured hinge bearing 25 at the front edge of the body 6 is received between a pair of vertically spaced apertured companion bearings 26 and 21 at the rear edge of the shoulder portion 8 and through which a vertical steering post 28 extends to swingably connect the front end of the body with the rear end thereof. The post 28 is journalled in a bushing 29 and the upper ends ofthe post and bushing extend into the pommel 30 of a saddle 38a which overlies the hinged edges of the front and rear portions of the body and with its rear portion suitably secured to the rear portion of the body 6 and with its front portion free of the shoulder or front portion 8 of the body. Handlebars 3! are suitably connected transversely at the upper end of the steering post 28.

Fork-shaped arms 32 are connected at their upper ends to the lower end of the steering post 28 and curve forwardly and outwardly into the lower portion of the shoulders 8 adjacent the upper end of the respective front legs 1 and are suitably secured thereto as shown at 33.

In the operation of the device, the rear wheels are driven by the chain I 8 and sprockets I! and Hi from the pedals 22 operated by a child seated on the saddle 30a. The front end of the body 6 on which the front wheels are mounted is steered by a horizontal turning movement of the handle bar 3!.

Imitation stirrups 34 extend downwardly from each side of-the saddle to conceal the pedals 22.

Having described the invention what is claimed as new is: 4

l. A toy horse comprising a body including a rear section and a front section, a saddle fixed on the rear section and overlying the front section, means pivotally connecting said sections together for swinging of the front section on the rear section for steering comprising a bushing having an upper end extending upwardly out of the front section into said saddle, a steering post in said bushing having a lower end within said front section connected thereto, a separate pommel on said saddle into which said steering post extends, and handle bars on said steering post extending out of said pommel, said saddle and pommel concealing the upper ends of the bushing and steering post.

2. A toy horse comprising a body, front and 'g,

said rear wheels comprising a pair of pedals at v opposite sides of said body intermediate said body and stirrups, said stirrups concealing said pedals and together with said body forming guide ways in which said pedals work and preventing feet on said pedals from slipping laterally off the same.
