s claims. (ci. 24e-c5) This invention relates to paper winding machinos and more particularly to that type .of paper winding machine known as a "Pope Reel winding machine.
'I'he "Pope Reel" type of machine is used principally for winding a web of paper produced by a paper-making machine onto a winding roll. With this type oi machine the end portion of a paper web is wound on an empty winding spool or roll which issupported. in a position herein termed its initial position. in such a manner that the roll engages the under driving drum to the end that the latter element will drive the winding roll. The end portion of the web will begin to wind on said roll and as soon as the web has become firmly xed to the roll by the winding action the roll is moved into a secondary position where it remains until the roll has become lled. such movement into this secondary position enabling an empty winding roll to be brought into the pri-l mary or initial position.
As soon as the roll which is in the secondary position has become filled. the web is severed and automatically transferred to the new empty winding roll, thus to permit the filled winding roll to be removed without stopping the winding of the paper web.
The usual Pope Reel" machine. as well as the present device, utilizes two separate supporting frames which are movable with respect to each other thereby to admit of transference of a roll from one to the other frame, from the initial to the secondary or running position.
However, it has been found that the above described Pop Reel" mechanism has a serious fault in that the paper web may be mutilated whenever an empty winding roll in its initial position is lowered toward the driving drum for the purpose of engaging the paper web which is be ing wound upon another roll disposed in the secondary position. This damage occurs for the reason that the empty winding roll, prior to its engagement with the moving paper web. is not rotating and. therefore, the relatively weak paper web is damaged as the same is pressed between the rotating driving drum and the non-rotating winding roll. In other words, the empty winding roll depends upon the friction existing between itself and the paper web to bring the stationary roll upto speed and as the paper web is relatively weak it often cannot withstand this treatment and it is, as a consequence, damaged.
it is, therefore, a primary object of the present invention to `provide a paper winding machine with means whereby the empty winding roll may 2 be rotated and brought up to an appropriate angular velocity preparatory to lowering the same against a moving paper web.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide such a winding roll accelerating means which may be so constructed and arranged that it will not interfere with the normal operation of a "Pope Reel" paper winding machine.
With the above and other objects in view as will'hereinafter appear. the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of'a preferred embodiment oi the invention from which the several features of the invention and the advantages at,- tained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.-

Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 8, the present invention is incorporated in a winding machine which comprises the side frame members I0 and Il between which is mounted a driving shaft I2 carrying the usual driving drum I3 and having its distal end mounted in a bearing block I2'. This driving drum I3 may be driven by a motor I4' or other suitable driving means connected with the shaft i2. Mounted adjacent each end of the driving drum I3 and coaxially of and about the shaft I2 is one of a pair of quadrant arms I5 and i6. The top portion of each of these quadrant arms I5, I6 is provided with a yoke I9 which is adapted slidingly to receive a journal box 20, only one of which is shown herein. Each journal box 2li has rotatably mounted therein one end of a shaft 2| upon which is mounted the usual paperwinding roll 22. As is y carried upon a stub shaft 28 carried by the frame member III. This mechanism forms no part of the present invention and it will suffice to state that the quadrant arm I6 is similarly provided with such mechanism. Also, it is only necessary to state that the cylinder 23, associated with theV arm I5, and a similar cylinder (not herein shown), associated with the arm I3. are adapted to be connected with a hydraulic system tothe end that a single hand-actuated valve will control the movements of the pistons contained within the cylinders. It is to be understood that as the piston 21 is forced in and out of the cylinder V23 the crank 25 will be swung about its pivot 2B so that the arm ,I will move in clockwise and counterclockwise directions about the shaft I2. The

The roll 22 in this secondary position continuesl to accumulate paper until it is filled at which time the paper web is severed from the filled roll and quickly transferred to an empty roll which has been placed within the arms I5 and I6. This empty rolll is held out of 4contact with the paper web until Just prior to the time the web is to be severed from .the lled roll and at that time the empty roll is loweredupon the web which is thereafter severed and then quickly wound thereabont.
In order to retain the empty winding roll out of engagement with the paper web until the web is severed from the filled roll, the present machine 33 which has its other end portion slidingly received within a hydraulic cylinder 34. This hydraulic cylinder is pivotally secured upon a pin 35 which in turn is vcarried by the frame III.

veach ofV which is rigidlyl secured upon the inner end portion of a respective' one of the stationary bearing blocks 33, 38. The top portion of each ofthe arms 31, 31 is formed as an inclined piane or cam surface 39 (see Fig. l) and when the quadrant arms I5 and I6 are in the position shown in Fig. 1. the winding roll 22 will rest upon the inclined plane or cam portions 39. 39 to the end that it will be held above and out of engagement with the paper web 36. Whenever it is desired to lower the winding roll against the web it is only necessaryto turn the quadrant arms I5 and I6 in a clockwise direction until the roll is no longer in engagement with the arms 31, 31.
In order to initiate the rotation of the empty l roll before the same is lowered into engagement with the web, the present winding roll shaft 2i is provided with a member 43 which extends from and coaxially of one endofthe shaft.` Upon the end of member 4I) is rigidly secured a cup-like female clutch element which comprises a hub4I from which extends a circular wall 42 having an annular flange 43 extending from the periphery thereof. 1
The present invention contemplates the use of a rotary male clutch elementwhich may be inserted within thisjcup-'likejelement for the purposeof vinitiating the lrotation of the'win'cling roll "and'bringing' the latter'eleme'nt up'to its properl speedat vwhich timetherotary element may be removed'fromv the cup-likeel'ement and the winding roll may-be loweredv against the paper web.
Inits preferred form this rotaryvor driving element takes the form of an air clutch designated generally bythe-numeral 44 and comprising a hollow'hub portion 4I which-'is keyed or otherwise secured upon anendwise shiftable shaft l43. Bonded upon the periphery of the hub 45 as at 41 is an annularrubber tire 43 having an annular hollow chamber 43 formed therein. which chaml 'ber is in direct communication with one end of a radial bore BII formed within the/hub 45. The
innerend of the bore Il opens-directly upon an annular groove 5I formedabout the periphery of the shaft which has a radial bore 52 disposed therein with the'outer'.` end portion of this bore in communication withthe annular groove 5I. The inner portion of thebore l2 leads to a shaft bore 53, the chamber 49 will be expanded thereby to increase the radius of -the tire periphery. The diameter of the tire 46 is such that it is slightly less than the inner diameter of the flange 4I. Therefore, the tire 4I, when deflated, may be readily inserted into the flange 43 and then it may be inflated to the end that the periphery of the tiremay engage the flange for the purpose of driving the same. y
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 4. the shaft 46 is-slidingly received within a longitudinalbore 54 formed within a driving shaft .55 which is rotatably journaled in any suitable manner within spaced pillow blocks 56 and 5l which are rigidly mounted upon a table top 6I. The rear end portion of the driving shaft extends slightly beyond the block 51 and has secured thereto a pulley 59 which is belted to a driving means hereinafter described.
Formed intermediate the ends of the driving shaft 55 is a slot 60 in which is disposed a key 6I the inner portion of which is disposed within a longitudinal groove 62 formed withintheV shaft 46. A collar63 is receivedover the driving shaft 55 and is secured thereupon-by means -of a set screw 64 for the purpose of locking the same in place over the key 6I. This construction permits the shaft 46 to be moved back and forth within the driving shaft 55 but at the same time it prevents the shaft 46 from turning relative to the driving shaft 55. Therefore, rotation of the driving shaft 55 ywill drive the male clutch member 44 in synchronlsm therewith.
The rear end portion of the shaft 46 extends beyond the confines of the driving shaft 55 and it h'as secured to its end a suitable fluid coupling 65 which has a fluid-delivering hose 66 connected therewith. This coupling 65 is adapted to deliver air under pressure to the shaft bore 53 and at the same time permits relative movement between the shaft 46 and the hose 66.
Depending from the table top 58 are table legs 6l for supporting the same and these legs straddle an extended portion of the driving drum shaft l2 which has a belt' pulley 68 secured thereto. The motor I4 having a shaft 69 extending therefrom is connected to the pulley 68 by means of a belt lll and pulley lI which is carried by the shaft 69. Rotation of the motor will, therefore, drive the driving drum I3. A second pulley 12, fast upon the shaft 69. is connected by means of a belt 'i3 to the pulley 59 and, therefore, the motor it is also effective for driving the male clutch member all. Bearing blocks I2' and 69 are provided for properly supporting the shaftsl I2 and 69 respectively.
Mounted upon a table cross-piece 74 is an idler pulley l5 which engages the belt 'i3 and functions as a belt tightener.
' Referring particularly to Figs. 2, 4, and 5 the shaft 46 is provided with means whereby an operator may, at will, slide the shaft back and forth within the bore 54. In its preferred form this means comprises a ball bearing unit 'I6 with its inner race made fast to the shaft 46 and its outer race having a collar 11 force-fitted over it. The collar il has a pair of bosses 1,8, 'I6 disposed on opposite sides thereof for the purpose of receiving a pair of yokes 19, 19 which are carried upon the end of a shipper element 60. The lower end portion of the shipper element l is pivotally carried upon a pin 6I which is mounted within a flange 82 secured upon a leg 6l of the table unit.
Intermediate its ends the shipper element 66 is pivotally connected with Ia piston rod 6l which is slidingly received within an air cylinder I4 bolted to the table as at 65. It is to be understood that as the piston Il is forced back and forth within the air cylinder 64. the shipper element 83 becomes effective to extendthe clutch 44 into and to retract the clutch out of the flange 42 of the female clutch member;
Referring particularly to Fig. '1, a pair of airconducting hoses 86 and I6' may be connected to the respective .ends of the cylinder 64 for the conducting air under pressure to each side of a piston head 6l which is carried by the piston 6I.
,The hoses orvconduits 8.5 and. are both connected to a selector valve 68 which in turn is connected with a source of fluid pressure 69. Therefore, an operator may, by merely operating the valve 88, shift the clutch 44 back and forth relative to the femme clutch member. To facilitatey the actual engagement of thel clutch 44 and flange 43, the present mechanism is provided with a valve 90 which is connected to the fluid-coupling 65 and also to the source of fluid under pressure 89. Manipulation of valve 90 will be effective to inflate and deflate the clutch 44. Therefore,
whenever it is desired to initiate the rotation of n the winding roll 22 before engaging the same with the paper web, itis merely necessary to shift the clutch 44 to a position within theflange 42 and then inate the clutch. The inflated clutch v will engage the inner periphery of the ange 43 and as the clutch is rotated constantly by the motor it will be'effective to im'part rotation to the wi ding roll 22. After the winding roll has l been brought up to speed, the clutch may then be deflated and removed from the flange 43, after which the quadrant arms I5 and I6 may be rotated slightly in a clockwise direction thereby to slide the winding roll off the inclined planes 39, 39 and downwardly towards the driving drum and against the paper web.
It is to be understood. of course, that the present mechanism is so designed that whenever theV winding roll 22 is in its initial position and out of contact with the paper web, the male clutch element is disposed coaxially of the female clutch element which is carried by the winding roll.
From the above description it is clear that the present clutching means in no way interferes with the normal operation of the paper winding mechanism and furthermore, it comprises a most efficient means whereby the winding roll may be brought up to speed preparatory to bringing the same into engagement with the paper web.
We claim:
1. A paper winding machine colmprising, a driving drum, means for rotating said driving drum, a paper winding roll normally disposed in surface contact with said driving drum so as to be driven thereby, means initially for supporting said winding roll out of contact with said driving drum, a clutch element extending coaxially of and drum. l
vfor rotating said male clutch element, iaiuid actuated means `for shifting said male clutch element into and out of engagement with said female clutch yelement thereby to impart rotation `to said winding roll, and means for shifting said winding roll into operative engagement with said driving drum. l 1
3. A paper winding machine comprising, a drivine drum. means for rotating said driving drum. a paper winding roll normally disposed in surface contact with said driving drum so as to be driven ing drum, means to rotate said driving drum, a
pair of quadrant arms each pivotally supported y adjacent aresp'ective one of the end portions of said driving drum, a paper winding roll carried by said quadrant arms and normally disposed in -surface contact with said driving drum so as to be'- driven thereby,'means disposed: adjacent each end portion of said driving drum for initially supporting, in cooperation with said quadrant arms, said winding roll directly above and out'of contact with said driving drum, means extending co' axially of and from one end of said winding roll,
an auxiliary driving device normally disposed in a position remote from said winding roll, means for thereby, means initially for supporting said winding roll outof contact with said driving drum, a female clutch element extending coaxially of and `from one end of said winding roll, an expandable male clutch element disposed 'coaxially of said female clutch element whenever said winding roll is supported in its initial position, means for rotating said male clutch element, means forl shifting said male clutch member into and out of making relation with said female clutch element, fluid actuated means for expanding said male clutch member into engagement with said female clutch element thereby to impart rotation to said winding roll, and means for shifting said winding roll into operative engagement with said driving drum.
4. A paper winding machine comprising, a driving drum, means to rotate said driving drum, a pair of quadrant arms each pivotally supported adjacent a respective one of the end portions of said driving drum, a paper winding roll carried by said quadrant arms and normally disposed in surface contact with said driving drum so as to be driven thereby, a stationary arm having an inclined cam surface disposed adjacent each end portion of said driving drum for initially supporting upon such cam surfaces, in cooperation with said quadrant arms, -said winding roll directly above and out of contact with said driving drum, an auxiliary winding roll driving means operatively connected with said iirst mentioned means,
means for connecting and disconnecting saidA auxiliary driving means to and from said winding roll while the latter is out of contact with said driving drum thereby initially to rotate the same, and means for shifting said quadrant arms about said driving drum and relative to said inclined cam surfaces so as to lower said winding roll into surface engagement with said driving drum.
5. A paper winding machine comprising, a drivshifting said auxiliary driving device into and out of engagement with said last mentioned means for imparting rotation to said winding roll while the same lis disposed above and out of contact with said driving drum, and means for shifting said quadrant arms so as to bring said rotating winding roll into surface engagement with said driving drum.-
6. A paper winding machine comprising, a driving drum, means to rotate said driving drum. a pair of quadrant arms each pivotally supported adjacent a respective one of the end portions of said driving drum, a paper winding roll carried by saidquadrant arms and normally disposed in surface contact with said driving drum so as to be driven thereby, a stationary arm having an inclined cam surface disposed adjacent each end portion of said driving drum for initially su'pporting upon such cam surfaces, in cooperation with said quadrant arms, said winding roll directly above and out of contact with said driving drum, clutch means extending coaxially of and from one end of saidwinding roll, an auxiliary driving device normally disposed in a position remote from said winding roll, means for shifting said auxiliary driving device into and out of engagement with said clutch for imparting rotation to said winding roll while the same is disposed above and out of contact with said driving drum. and means for shifting said quadrant arms about said driving drum and relative to said inclined cam surfaces so as to lower said winding roll into surface engagement with said driving drum.
