GAS-RETORT.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,670, dated July 5, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, lVILLIAM STRATTON, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Retorts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, of which Figure 1 is an end View of a D retort, showing an upright partition connecting the floor and arched portion of the retort. Fig. 2 is a side view in section with a portion of the arch removed to show the partition. Fig. 3 is a horizontal view showing the floor of the retort; Figs. 4 and 5. plans of the end for closing the retort. one of them, viz. Fig. 4; has the rim for holding the lute with two nicks a, a for the purpose of allowing the edge of the partition to enter the rim.

The improvement I have made in gas retorts now in general use viz. in D retorts, consists in the introduction of an upright partition B which extends from the front to near the end of the retort. This partition being connected with the floor and arch of the retort gives great additional strength and durability to parts of the retort most liable to give out, while it serves all the purposes of a separate chamber for subjecting the gases from the material placed on one side of the partition to a further heating in its passage to the exit pipe (0) placed on the opposite side of the partition near the front of the retort. The partition B, does not extend the whole length of the retort. but allows the gas to pass its rear end.

In the D retort commonly in use the rear end is closed, but from the strength given by the partition of my to construct it with both ends open, thus giving facility in building by which the cost of the retort is reduced. By preserving a free outlet, and not clogging the gas by passing it throughsmall chambers, &c., it is not retained in the retort so long as to destroy its illuminating properties; and should it be desirable to present it to a purifying material (for instance lime) said material may be placed in the empty side of the chamber of the retort for that purpose, and can be drawn from it with facility on opening either of the heads of the retort.

Having described my improvement in gas retorts what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment of an upright partition B dividing the D retort into chambers in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth in the foregoing specification.
