Description

Mamh 1949. s. KANALEY 2,463,391 WHEEL ATTACHMENT FOR LUGGAGE vFiled March 19, 1946 INVENTOR GENEVIEVE KANALEY Patented Mar. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WHEEL ATTACHMENT FOR LUGGAGE Genevieve Kanaley, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application March 19, 1946, Serial No. 655,634
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in suitcases or similar cases and is especially useful for commercial travellers whose sample cases are often times very heavy.
An object is to provide a special compartment adjacent the wheel compartments so that special articles such as stockings, lingerie, and the like may be stored without being packed in with the contents of the main body of material Where they are so likely to be soiled and wrinkled.
Further and more specific objects, features and advantages will more clearly appear from the specification hereinafter set forth especially when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the specification and which illustrate a present preferred form which the invention may assume.
Still more particularly the invention comprises the formation of three compartments at one end of the case which compartments are closed off from each other and the remainder of the body portion. The middle compartment has a lid to permit specially fine articles of lingerie and the like to be stored therein separate from the articles in the main portion. The outer two compartments have each a pair of slots therein. Wheels are housed in each of the outer compartment and project through said slots part Way to permit the case to be set on end and rolled along at will.
The present preferred form which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawings of which Fig, 1 is an inverted plan view of the case with a corner broken away;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
'Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the structure of the device embodying my invention is illustrated by a suitcase A having a cover [0, and a body portion having a bottom wall H and a continuous side wall l2. Near one end of the case A and spaced from an adjacent portion l2 of wall I2 is an auxiliary wall 13 part of which at the mid portion thereof is in the form of a lif-table lid M to enable the compartment beneath to be made available for storage. Between the walls 12' and I3 are two partitions l5 and I6 at right angles thereto thus forming three chambers between the wall 12 and the wall IS. The middle chamber has thus been described as having a lid I4. The end wall l2 forms the outside walls of the two outer chambers, said outside walls being provided with pairs of spaced slots [1. As shown in Fig. 3, a wall [8 extends between the upper edges of walls I2 and I3 and across the partitions I5 and I6 to completely enclose the compartments above mentioned.
In the slots ll are disposed wheels !9 which extend partly through the slots to the outside of the case. These wheels [9 are mounted on an axle 20 held against the inner face of wall [2 by means of a series of straps 2 i.
It is clear that this invention provides a series of closed end compartments, one of which has a lid and may contain clothes such as lingerie, stockings, and the like which are to be kept separate from the main chamber of the case and the other two compartments are adapted to receive wheels disposed therein to extend through the adjacent wall and provide means whereby the case, especially when it is heavy, may be rolled along and thus relieve the user of carrying it.
While the invention has been described in detail and with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to such details and form since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications of the invention which may come within the language or scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
A case having a cover and a body portion, said body portion having a bottom wall and four side walls, an auxiliary wall spaced from one of said side walls, two transverse partitions connecting said one side wall and said auxiliary wall and forming an inner and two outer compartments, the inner compartment having a removable cover to maintain articles therein separate from articles in the main body of the case, slots formed in said one side wall adjacent each outer compartment, and wheels housed in said outer compartments and projecting partially through said slots to permit the case to be rolled along the ground.
GENEVIEVE KANALEY.
