MEANS OF AUTOMATICALLY REMOVING FERROUS AND OTHER PARTICLES FROM LIQUID Filed Sept. 14, 1944 Patented Jan. 18, 1949 MEANS OF AUTOMATICALLY REMOVING FERROUS AND OTHER PARTICLES FROM LIQUID Arthur Scrivener, Birmingham, England Application September 14, 1944, Serial No 554,120 v In Great Britain April 25, 1944 This invention has reference to improved means of automatically removing ferrous and other particles from liquid, the said means being primarily intended to constitute a self-contained assembly unit particularly adapted for use in connection with metal cutting and grinding machines.
In mechanisms of this kind it is a recognised practice to provide a supply of cooling liquid to the cutting edge and work face from a reservoir, which supply of liquid may be circulated by a pump or other means to ensure a continuous flow during the working period of the machine. In the progress of such cutting or grinding operations fine particles of the metal removed by the cutting or grinding edge or face become introduced into the liquid stream and enter the reservoir from which the supply is obtained and circulated, and it will be obvious that it is a marked desideratum that means should be provided for removing any ferrous or other particles so introduced into the liquid and which eventually reach the reservoir and tend to choke or foul the liquid which is being circulated to the supply line.
The present invention consists of improved means of automatically removing ferrous and other particles from liquid, characterised by a rotatable magnetic member located in a restricted channel connected to the liquid reservoir from which it is desired to extract ferrous and other extraneous adherent particles; and in means for removing the said particles from the rotatable member, the whole constituting a self-contained assembly unit particularly adapted for use in connection with metal cutting and grinding mechanisms.
The invention will now be described according to two applications thereof with particular reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a diagrammatic front elevation of one practical application of the invention utilising a rotatable disc carrying a plurality of magnets.
Fig. 2 is an end View looking in the direction of the arrow Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 illustrates a modified means of carrying and of traversing the magnets.
Referring first to the illustration covered by Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, the apparatus is intended for use as a self-contained assembly for attachment to a metal cutting machine. There is provided a disc :1 having inset therein a plurality of cylindrical permanent magnets b. The disc is adapted to be positively rotated 1 Claim. (Cl. 2101.5)
through worm reduction gear c from the shaft (1 of an electric motor or other power unit. The disc a is rotatable with a horizontal spindle e connected to the worm reduction gearing and the lower section of the disc 11 is disposed within the cooling liquid flowing through a channel restriction g forming a part of the liquid container g or sump from which the cooling liquid may be supplied, directed and delivered against the tool cutting edge and work face. The rotatable disc a is associated at a point above the liquid level with non-magnetic scrapers or wipers h which have contact with the surfaces of the disc a on either side thereof and therefore with the ends of the magnets b which ends are located in the same planes as the side faces of the disc. These scrapers or wipers serve to remove any ferrous or other adherent particles which may have been extracted from the liquid by the magnetic action of the rotating disc; the removed particles are directed by gravity along the downwardly inclined faces of the scrapers or wipers h into a delivery chute or waste container The scrapers or wipers may be formed as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 of angle or channel section to constitute a trough.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the permanent magnets b are carried on a continuous chain is which is mounted about a series of sprocket wheels I which determine the path of the chain. At one part of its traverse the chain with the associated permanent magnets passes through the restricted channel g feeding the coolant liquid into the receptacle g, and the magnetised particles are extracted from the liquid and carried by the chain transmission to the scrapers or wipers h which serve to remove the ferrous or adherent particles from the faces of the magnets into the delivery chute or waste container 7'.
It is intended that the mechanism forming the subject of the present invention shall form a complete unit for attachment to and use in connection with a metal cutting or grinding machine used in connection with ferrous metals, and that its operation shall be continuous and in synchrony with the operation of the metal cutting machine so that at all times when the machine is functioning the device for extracting the ferrous and other adherent particles is also functioning so as to ensure the maintenance of the supply of cooling liquid in a clear or substantially clear condition for circulation and redistribution.
By disposing the rotatable disc within a restricted channel such as g through which the cooling liquid is caused to flow in its passage to or from the supply reservoir or container it is ensured that the whole of the cooling liquid is in turn continuously submitted to the particle,

A device of the class described comprising, in
combination, a rotatable disk, means for driving said disk continuously in one direction, a conduit for carrying in contact with a portion of said disk a stream of liquid containing magnetizable particles, magnetized rods extending transversely their'ends on the other side of the disk substantially in a single plane, and scrapers for removing particles from the ends of the rods after they emerge from the stream of liquid.
